Great wildebeest migration crossing the Mara River between Masai Mara and Serengeti [Kenya-Tanzania]

- This video features amazing pictures of thousands of wildebeests (gnus) crossing the Mara River between the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. We were so close to them that they were splashing us on their way up from the river bank.
The wildebeest migration (they are also joined by zebras) is the last great migration nature has to offer and the river crossing 'the crossing' is the best spot to observe the migration. During the crossing, wildebeests have to avoid crocodiles who rest in the Mara River waiting for wildebeest to cross.
This video was filmed from the Serengeti Park in Tanzania as wildebeest cross from the Masai Mara park in Kenya. This is the return migration that takes place in August or September. The inbound migration from the Serengeti Park to Masai Mara takes place in June or July. There are more than 1.5 million wildebeests doing the wildebeest migration every year. We are so grateful we had a chance to witness the wildebeest migration.

Great video. Very informative. I wonder if maybe the crocs didn't attack right off because they were trying to warm up in the sun. Then it was too late once they got their body temperature evened out. Lucky for the wildebeests...except for, you know, the ones who drowned from exhaustion. ):

When I went they had migrated 3 weeks earlier. It is so amazing to watch. I had the best holiday ever although I missed seeing it
So unfortunate, because these few minutes were the highlight of our trip. We hope you get the chance to go back at the right time.

It happens twice a year. From Tanzania to Kenya in June-July and from Kenya to Tanzania in August-September. A million and a half of them cross the river each time. It is an absolutely incredible spectacle.

What time of year did you visit? And which side were you on? Kenyan or Serengeti?
They normally cross from Tanzania to Kenya in July and back to Tanzania in September. We were there in September and were on the Tanzanian side, watching them cross back.

Absolutely. We are forever grateful that we were able to witness this incredible spectacle. Now that buffalos don't migrate anymore in North America, the wildebeest migration is the last great land migration there is to observe. The sheer number of animals and the setting with the river crossing is like nothing else on earth.

We used a small tour operator called Corso Safari. We had a private tour for the two of us and it wasn't much more expensive than an organized tour with a bunch of strangers. We highly recommend them.

Hello supporting my friends as promised...interesting how they all followed same path. What a huge population. You got really close there. I was shocked at how many died in the river...i wonder why soooo many died...Where is this?
It is the Mara River, between Kenya and Tanzania. Out of 1.5 million wildebeests that cross, a few hundreds of them are bound to die. Some of them drown. Some of them get eaten by crocodiles. Their flesh participate in the river's ecosystem, feeding fish, which in turn feed crocodiles and birds. The circle of nature.

Great video, but the fact that you were standing in their route on the exit side of the river led to a stamped, you tamped with the natural setting!!
There is unfortunately a trail on the ridge and we were parked on the side of the trail. Not sure how we could have done things any differently.

I had went there in the year 2019 .That time they were migrating from masai mara to serengeti - but the river had almost dried up
We hope it was still a spectacle to watch.
I can't believe that there are no croc's waiting for them.The croc's know when they are going to cross and are waiting.
There are crocs, but not enough to eat 1 million wildebeest :).

Where is this place? We are planning to go next year but we do not know which is the best crossing point to visit.
You never know where they are going to cross. But around Kogatenge are where a few of the crossing points are.

More than 2 million wildebeest in migration but thousands died because of thirst, hunger, exhaustion, age and predators. But that's how nature control their population. *Survival of the fittest.* Born>Live>Die and no one can escape from that even us.

Yes. There are documentaries about the whole ecosystem that the wildebeest migration maintains in the river.
I had no idea so many wildebeests die during migration. So sad!
On the bright side, the wildebeest that die in the river end up feeding an entire ecosystem of fish and crocodiles, so they don't go to waste. If they didn't die in the river, they would get killed by predators on land anyway.

I guess they drowned and got trampled on.The water at some places was low.
And thousands were pushing behind them. Wildebeests drowning in the river feed a whole ecosystem of fish, birds, crocodiles, etc. The circle of life.
Why dont they build a bridge for the poor animals to cross the Mara river safely? After all the migrations have been occuring for years.
It would probably be very easy for lions 🦁🦁🦁 to just wait on the other side of the bridge and no wildebeest would ever take it 😁😁😁.

Since they follow a circle over 12 months, it is hard to say where they beginning and where they end. What we filmed was the wildebeest crossing back from Masai Mara to the Serengeti.

It is an optical illusion due to the camera zoom. Crossing the river and getting up the cliff was a lot harder than going around our truck 😁.

The ecosystem of the Mara River has been studied extensively and how the wildebeest dying during the migration impact he food supply of fish and crocs and how, in turns, these fit in the circle of life.
I hate tourists! Why do you do that? Wildebeests don't know what to do of you are there 🤬
If there were no tourists, there would be no national park and it would all have been turned into farmland.
