One of the greatest natural wonders of the world. They know they can’t stay on the other side so they get the courage to cross the River knowing full well they could be taken by the crocodiles. It’s a lesson we all need to follow…no matter what, keep going forward.
I notice that there are actually Wildebeest corpses in the river on both the left and right of the point of crossing. The Wildebeest are quite clearly spooked by the carcasses and try to move further away to cross the river. As this is occurring on both sides, it has the effect of funnelling the herds into a very narrow crossing point constrained by the need to avoid the dead bodies on either side, despite the fact that there is a very wide swathe of accessible river frontage to use.

That's a hard one. The migration happens between July & October. To see a crossing is hard to predict, unless you have lot's of time. The wildebeeste cross around the middle/end July and any time from late september to the middle of October, depending on the rains. The best time to visit the Mara is Sept/Oct, then it is pot luck if you see a crossing. If you are fortunate, you will probably see more than one. The Mara is a great experience whenever you go.
Gorgeous. I love how they all jump before getting in the water, minimizing their time in there. Every thing that can increase your survival odds, no matter by how little, mist be used.
I ask myself this. This natural phenomenon can not be applied to the patrimony of humanity? Because in my concept I should be among the natural wonders
Because we humans tend to be anthropocentric. A form of them to this day have survived long before we showed up and yet we think we are the only ones able to do anything past poop and eat. Its all based on necessity how we develope along generations. It is sad really that we can be so arrogant :(
@MrMagnusFogg You are most welcome. We have often thought the same thing. It is always one particular spot, no matter how much riverbank there is. It is like animals that move through grass, always in each others footsteps. And, are we not the same? we drive across the plains, always in each others tracks, even if it looks quicker to cut across. Of course we all know it is for safety reasons, but in the case of the wildebeeste, i think paranoia comes into it. And thank you
D’ja notice that, when you put on headphones and turn the sound up, you start hearing words from the herd. Either that or the neighbour below me has been using his bong by an open window again.
The theory is; they see the widebeeste ahead of them go in at that piont and do not get attaked, so it makes sense to go into the water at the same point. It is not unlike dirving off road, you follow the tracks of the previous drive because you know there are no pot holes etc?
Thanks a lot for the video, amazing! Impresionante y a la vez gracioso ver lo que hacen estos animales, esa forma de saltar al agua, simplemente único.
Yes, but it fluctuates, there is on average between 1 & 1.5 million each year. But you can add 250,000 Zebra, 100.00 Thomson Gazelles and a few others.

All that room and the beasts are jumping on each other, what a site to see 👀. Such beautiful and majestic animals.
They follow the path taken safely to make sure it is not too deep. Notice it got thinner when there were a few that drowned. You watch and go.

Is this what they mean by "herd mentality" ?
Why do they jump into the water? Do they have a hard time in the mud or something?
There are some dead ones at the edge of the river. Why are they dead?
Crocodiles.
They get hurt by the crocodiles
They get injured in the stampede to get to the other side and drown.
