- The Third Largest Railway Viaduct in Wales - Cefn Coed Viaduct.
Cefn Coed Viaduct in South Wales is Grade 2 listed and is the third largest railway viaduct in Wales.
Closed to the railways in 1965, the Viaduct is now maintained by Sustrans and is a beautiful curved railway structure dominated the valley it spans.
We also pass over Pontsarn Viaduct and see the remains of Pontsarn Railway Station.

Cefn. Pronounced like kevan. The pub is pronounced aberglise. F is pronounced as a V. And Merthyr Tydfil is pronounced Merther tidvil. Pronunciation by me a Yorkshire man in wales since 1995😁
What a superb set of videos. As mentioned previously, this is the area where I grew up. You've captured its essence extremely well.
Whilst I reluctantly corrected some of your pronunciation, you got Pontsarn 100% correct.
Walking in the Pontsarn area was and is a real relaxing treat.
There was once - back in the 1980s/90s - a 2nd pub called The Pontsarn in close proximity to the Aberglais.
My parents lived on Cefn Coed High Street for a few years, literally just a couple of hundred yards from the "Cefn end" of the viaduct & the villages' station. I used to fish for trout in the part of the river Taff that runs under the viaduct.
The project to dual the A465 & parts of the A470 has been underway for many years and is an immense engineering achievement, as was the construction of the B&M Railway back in the 1800s.
Thanks for making these videos.
Many thanks for another brilliant video 👍🏻
Very kind Steven thank you
Excellent as usual and you do explain things so well with use of maps etc!
Very kind Peter thank you
Fantastic video thanks Ant. Such a lot of history. Loving it. Thanks for taking me along. Please take carw
Thanks for watching as always 🙂
Crumlin Viaduct unfortunately no longer with us was Britain's tallest at 200ft tall! & the 3rd tallest in the world at one time, there is still some evidence of it left including I'm pretty sure 2 support pillars. Lots of great videos on TH-cam about this viaduct. Excellent as always and for once no rain in Wales!!. Keep 'em coming!
Nice one Ant, beautiful viaducts. I've really enjoyed this series.
Brilliant thank you
I drive past this so often and think I must do this at some point, it's magnificent. The A470 swept so much away including railways, a canal and villages. Those were the days of 'roads rule' so it is good to see how viaducts we actually have left about the place. Glad you enjoyed Wales, hope you come back soon.
It's a lovely little area isn't it Bob? Thanks very much
Beautiful walk and views, and gorgeous viaducts. Loved the series of 3 films with the previous tunnels. Thoroughly enjoyable, and all magnificently impressive structures.
Glad you enjoyed it and very kind of you to say 😌
Wonderful mountain scenary and stunning aerial shots. So good to see it's still navigable. Thank you for a very enjoyable video.
Thanks very much for watching Malcolm
Beautiful valley structure ,with fantastic drone footage Ant
Thanks very much for watching 🙂
Loved the drone footage in this one, it looks so beautiful at this time of year. Thank you Ant. 😊
Thanks very much for watching 😀
I lived in Cefn in the late 40's to mid 50's. I remember the viaduct but don't remember there being a station in Cefn. Great video, thanks.
Thanks very much for watching 🙂
unbelievable how they built it. JUST MAGIC. Well presented I must say
Very kind thanks very
Wonderful footage, Viaducts are such beautiful sculptures. Superb weather too which always adds to the atmosphere. I bet the line in its heyday was incredibly pretty. Looking forward to your next instalment.
Thanks very much Nick. I'll probably be back in Wales next year
Brilliant views & drone footage Ant,x
It was a lovely but long day 🙂
The small bowstring
footbridge over the A465 was not very old, but has now been removed to enable the widening of the A465.
Thank you for that video, Ant. At least the viaducts are saved for further use. They must save a lot of uphill and downhill walking and cycling!
Thanks very much Michael. It is a lovely little route
I think the line lasted into the 70s or even later feeding Vaynor Limestone Quarry - a new bridge was installed over the A465 in the mid 60's and only replaced with the new bridge you saw in 2023 with the A465 dualing project.
Funny how things looked better in black and white days🤔 That was a cracking finale, stunning viaducts and great walking (apart from the random horse pooh!!!) Yes Ant, we have stuck with you, thanks for the great content and history, always here waiting for your next episode👍👍👍👍👍
Ditto! What he said! Wonderful views. music and commentary.
Very kind thanks very much 😃
Dankeschön für das schöne Video 💓👍🏻
Thanks very much for watching 🧡
Great stuff! Really interesting as always. You may also enjoy researching the now dismantled Crumlin Viaduct, also in Wales. Would love to see you do a video on the disused railway between Budleigh Salterton, Ottery St Mary, Sidmouth, in Devon sometime! Keep up th ebook work, thank you. 👍🏻
Superb video Ant. So informative. Loved the viaducts. Amazing engineering. Beautiful walkway, and photos. Excellent filming. Thank you.
Very kind Shirley thanks very much 😀
LOL! second possibly, and enjoying already
Enjoy, thank you
@@TrekkingExploration So did Ant ... Lovely documentary, stunting views of the viaduct too ... Thumbs up!!
Excellent series on a now quiet line that once transported millions of tonnes of Welsh coal for the Royal Navy in wartime…
I have seen local photos of this line with a class 37 loco on a demolition train lifting track about 1966 ,also a photo of same class 37 at torpantau tunnel portal
York is opening up the old train station within the walls next month 5th and 6th October could be a interesting day out
Hello Ant @ 2:42 to 3:15 - Looks very similar to the Monsal Trail!!! 😉🚂🚂🚂
I've got the Monsall Trail penciled in to do during autumn
@@TrekkingExploration C😎😎L - Perhaps we could met up & I could show you a few things about it!!! 🤔🚂🚂🚂
Thanks for sharing this. It's a beautiful viaduct. I visited Merthyr Tydfil last year and didn't get a chance to walk it. Must go back. I think that new roadworks you were looking at was the new Heads of the Valleys road. Was a lot of work going on last Easter.
Yes you need to come to North Wales next time!
I do want to come back to North Wales. Hopefully this Autumn. There's lots to do. I'll Keep an eye out for your recommendations 😉
@@TrekkingExploration awesome! Well if you want anymore recommendations get in touch - definitely can think of loads!
@@BecsterDotCom I'll drop you a message on Facebook unless you get to me first 🤣
Where the A465 had the new Blue bridge the old steel railway bridge it replaced has only recently been removed due to dueling the A465. if you look on google earth the street view shows going over the old bridge used as a footpath over the road.
I've abseiled off both those viaducts in the past,. Not allowed to do that anymore! In fact Pontsarn Viaduct used to be a very popular place to abseil off and even featured in an episode of Blue Peter, when one of the presenters tried bridge jumping off it. That's where you free fall, before taking a huge swing on a big loop of climbing rope. Anything you could attach a rope to was removed from the viaduct many years ago.
I went around these parts on my Silver Jubilee holiday last year, did Cefn Coed viaduct and Brecon Mountain Railway, will hopefully go back again. Now, I had been to South Wales a couple of times before, but not really go as far as Cardiff (which I also revisited as its great city), but some day I will share my venture, as I am currently trying to learn how to edit and make videos, so hopefully it will be released once I master the techniques!👍❤
❤
🙂
At the other end of the viaduct, the railway is now the A470. Some progress, eh?
The platform is a cool find
It's really good. Thanks for watching 🙂
Some of these viaducts in Wales are absolutely stunning! I notice they’re always stone, and not brick?
They really are lovely. Thank you for watching
