A really lovely fish, I had one for many years but had to put him up for adoption as he grew too large for my aquarium, ended up in a huge fish only tank. From what I have read, the male has a darker more vibrant blue colouring around the head when young and the female has a more grey blue colouring around the head, not as vibrant :-)
without another fish to compare it's hard to tell in my case- are you able to tell whether this is a male/female from what you see in my video? I also wonder what condition encourages the development of their dorsal fin streamer.
Be careful with these guys. I had one years ago that I grew from a half dollar size to around 7 inches before it mysteriously died. This fish will sometimes act like a Clow fish and bite your hands. The difference is because of their mouth the bite actually really hurts. They are beautiful fish and watching the transition is great.
so far not a problem with this, or the last one I had which died after a few years from juvi transitioned to adult. It was my own fault I put the fish through quarantine just as part of my move and it couldn't handle the stress of a smaller tank.
Knock on wood I haven't had bacterial infection on these guys both in retail or personal experience. The once thing I do notice is fungus infection, but that can very easily and quickly clear up even just on its own without medication as long as you keep water tip top condition.
haha close, Koran Angelfish does look very similar to emperor at their juvenile stage, but they do look quite differently once they transition to adult colors! This thread here contains a few images highlighting the differences: www.reefsanctuary.com/forum/index.php?threads/koran-vs-imperator-angel.7704/
My wife saying "We used to eat them all the time in the Philippines" breaks my heart.
