Myanmar's Youngest Maids | 101 East

  • When a maid from Myanmar fell from the window of a high-rise Singapore flat, the incident shocked the public. Then came the news that the girl was just 15 years old.
    In 2016, a 101 East investigation revealed that girls from Myanmar were being trafficked to Singapore to work as domestic helpers. One year on, we discover that the practice continues despite laws in both countries designed to prevent it.
    On this episode, 101 East exposes the powerful, corrupt forces still profiting from the labour of Myanmar's vulnerable young girls.

    oh man there's so much injustice in the world... all of this is hard to grasp, hard to believe a simple wound on a person is being untreated for leading to gross infection... hard to believe a 17 year is old being trafficked and abused in the hands of her owner.... where is the humanity, compassion in all this?

    The domestic workers that get sent from various countries to the Gulf nations (i.e. UAE, Saudi Arabia) also get treated horribly. I believe Indonesia has now refused to send its citizens there because of it.

      Any trip to Dubai will show that the Arab nations are the worst possible employers, In Dubai there are many fenced off areas where DEFINATELY foreigners (i.e.Tourists) are not allowed to see disgusting hovels where hundreds of Indian workers are crowded into tiny spaces, where one toilet to a hundred users will be smelled a mile away. Disgusting Arabs have not changed in a thousand years, other than they Drive Ferrari's rather than Camels these days.Try a trip down the back streets with a camera hanging around your neck, you'll be picked up PDQ.

      Terry Offord I used to live in Dubai and I would see construction workers wearing flip flops instead of steel toed boots and some weren't even wearing hard hats. I also heard stories of how badly some maids were treated. I felt like the world the workers lived in and the world we lived in were completely separate.

      Since I was a child (40 years ago) Indonesia maids were disappearing in the middle east. Some of my schoolmate aspired to become maids if not for foriegn workers in their own country, then in the Middle East. This to them seemed better than being a teacher or secretary, even with the knowledge that hundreds go missing every year.
      It would be good if something better existed for the poor to improve their situation.

    • @tangt4860
      @tangt4860 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      To give you first hand witness of the situation. Tin Tin could have been talking to other Myanmar maids in the neighbourhood from their unit windows and many employers in Singapore do not like that as it distracts them from the housework and looking after the children and the aged. Furthermore, there were too many precedents of maids tossing around gossip about other families and ganging up to give problems like stealing from one family and passing it to store with their friends in another unit and thus create a lot of disputes and quarrels as it involves the police, once the plot is exposed. Confiscation is really the most innocuous way and even schools around the world practice this and Tin Tin is after all, as the report clearly mentions still a playful child who has been paid to work as an adult. Wait till you hear and see real stories of maids being burned, starved, slapped, assaulted, raped and threatenend to mental instability over the slightest mistake by many wicked employers. Good thing is many real Singaporeans are now standing up in solidarity for the maids against these bad people and will not tolerate them staying and earning money in Singapore and giving Singaporeans a bad name. .

    • @user-jn9rv5gp9o
      @user-jn9rv5gp9o 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Even that's the case. It should be the employment agency and police department to solve the problem. The employer has no right to take away personal properties of the employee. It's not by saying "they might create trouble" to be out of the line.
      And if the Singaporeans don't want to get a bad reputation. Then simply pay more to hire some qualified workers, stop hiring underage slave girls, then problem solved.

    i went to Myanmar in Feb this year. Some of the families sell their kids to big cities so the kids can work there and send money home. I feel sorry for the kids. The kids never go home any more. They have no hope. They receive no education.

    • @Wotdermatter
      @Wotdermatter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same happens in other nearby countries especially Cambodia. There the children are sold and used within the country and go into places where they are abused by being given drugs and alcohol and "entertain" visitors by dancing, etc, until they are old enough to begin to participate in sexual activities. These often start with fondling of the customer's genitals or whatever, with the customer reciprocating. These lead to other activities as the girl gets older. Furthermore, these "programmes" are not just in places like Singapore but also in western countries. In the U.S.A. there is a big
      market for these events and they are not just in a few places but all over the country.

Then for years, it becomes a huge financial burden on the couple. And what do you know? The kid will be let go at age 16 so one less mouth to feed and then proceed to emotionally blackmail said kid in to sending money back home...

    Many of us in Singapore are also rather frustrated and annoyed by the callous official replies, as shown by Al Jazeera in the case of MOM. In fact, many teachers who dedicated their lives to long hours of educating and personally coaching students who went on to become successful overseas scholars and then returned to high postings in the government offices have expressed regret for not spotting the cold heartedness of these characters earlier.

      You do not appear to have done any research on this topic 'Silly Witch'
      There are well defined rules concerning businesses which employ, especially juniors, and most civilised nations adhere to such requirement/s however, we are discussing here,very junior, perhaps uneducated simple village girls,many of whom are actually 'persuaded' to go overseas (from Laos Vietnam,Cambodia and Myanmar) all nations where governments are made up of and are propped up by sheer greed and corruption. I suggest that you forget that many '18' year olds aren't legally 18,with many governments accepting the data on their passports. Consider if you would, the parents of usually Huge, uneducated families with lots of kids, rather than limiting their families,they send the 'oldest kids' overseas to find work, such 'kids' are merely slave labor, having neither choice nor option. Perhaps you should make contact with such young girls as I have, listen to their stories and understand how YOU would feel given a similar 'option! Look around Singapore, have a chat with the mainly Southern Indian men,thousands of whom have spent their lives BUILDING Singapore's magnificent buildings, shopping malls etc., then, and only then will you begin to understand the problem.

    Im a singaporean and seeing these negative news i felt angry and upset because it is damaging image of my country. I do have Myanmar as my domestic helper and i think generally people will treat another person with respect it is just a small percentage of arrogant bastards like to go againsts the system. Certainly there must have cases of falsely declareing of actual age maid by the myanmar official in singapore working now but these maid mostly came from poverty and needed the job to support home in Myanmar.

    That Louis Zung is involved and is a member of the ruling elite in Myanmar is no surprise. Many of you will be shocked beyond belief the spending power, despite the country claiming to be poor, their children and family have in Singapore, splurging from gourmet food, personal luxury tours and Sg govt subsidised tertiary education which many local Singaporeans do not even get to enjoy. The place where the Myanmar maids gather as featured in the film is diagonally opposite the Peninsula Plaza is a Myanmar enclave, where many shops have been largely taken over by Myanmar businessmen, not unlike Louis, who may have been given the opportunity to receive education in Singapore and thus cannot be fully vindicated of not knowing the age limit and legality of foreign manpower. But again, he might have powerful counterparts in Singapore to pull it off. One interesting point is that on weekends, the Filipino maids gather just right across on the lawns of St Andrew's Cathedral and in time, keeping our fingers crossed, it can be foreseen that territory dispute will arise as the Myanmar maids are now forced to occupyin a very expensive tax funded decorated white elephant but narrow walkway celebrating 50 years of Singapore Independence.

    Tin Tin was really lucky as many public housing recently built , just look at the Pinnacle at Tanjong Pagar, do not have a mid level covering to break any fall at all. She would have plunged straight to her death just like the maid who was working for the employer in the condominium, which are mostly occupied by foreigners.

    This is very sad to watch. But the problem is much deeper than it seems.
    Singaporeans has to employ FDW to help them with house chores and with the kids/elderly, as both partners (husband-wife) have to work to support family in rapidly raising living cost in Singapore.
    Mostly women would prefer to stay at home and take of the family, but have to go out and work. Many men would love to spend more time with their families, but have to have 2 jobs to pay off the bills.
    The least we can do is to treat our helpers with respect, understanding, care.

    Kudos to the reporters and crew covering this story. Please fell free to circulate what is going to be written from a first hand experience and knowledge of the maid situation in Singapore.
    Firstly, the incident of Tin Tin , John the employer and the location have been verified to be absolutely true this very morning with neighbour memory and even though the accident happened literally right at the doorstep. The local media is truly 156th in press freedom as nothing has been reported. To John's credit, he is really a nice and real Singaporean who did not even lament the high monetary losses, usually in the thousands due to the rash act of the maid. The only parties that benefit, despite similar incidents occurring constantly since more than 20 years ago starting with the FIlipina and Indonesian maids are the employment agencies (often fronted by proxies of local powerful and rich figures like Louis) and the ministries and officials from both Myanmar and Singapore who collect the fees and levies which both employers and maids have to pay upfront.

    Sadly it's the fate of most developing nation's poor people. I've seen the faces and houses of some of these employers in Asia and Middle East and most of them look poor too! Living in very small condos and having a maid is just ridiculous!

    I have talked with women from the Philippines who work in many different countries including Arab countries and they don't want to come to the United States
    I don't understand why
    They would rather work in Dubai or China then to come to the u.s.
    There are companies that offer meet up where men seeking women for marriage go to the Philippines but rarely do the women want anything to do with these men and they're not bad guys
    They just want more they want a rich guy they want somebody who has a big house and fancy cars and a lot of money which is why they go to Arab countries or to China because they can find the men like that even though they're married they think they will be able to get the man to marry them and divorced the wife

    They became maids because of social circumstances. To be detached from their loved ones and having to serve a household miles away from home, could be detrimental to their socio emotional well being in the long run.
    We used to have one, whom herself was a former Buddhist nun. She was very nice and hardworking at first, but years of service had turned her into someone who is lazy and manipulating.

    John is a demon. And his face deserved to be shown. No innocent playing here. We know how foreign domestic employers treat employees so don't come here and act nice.

  • @tangt4860
    @tangt4860 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    It does not help the foreign maids these days as as many have to face many foreigner employers who have assumed Singaporean PR and citizenship and pass themselves off as Singaporeans but carry with them the savage and cruel mentality of China and India. Those from Malaysia and Indonesia often ill-treat their maids with impunity (feeding them rotten scraps) as their home countries have very lax laws and society in those countries have long closed one eye on human compassion when it comes to servants.

    Im an employer of a helper myself. I have learbt that about age and background, i should never expect them to tell the truth. They lie, ALL THE TIME. Whether it is coaxed by agents or out of their own will, they lie. Therefore, its always a gamble, if we get a mentally matured or a childish helper. I always try to communicate properly to my helper the expectations, and pay attention to her emotional health as well as phyaical well being. She needs to be happy to organise a happy home for me to come back to.
