9:26 That is such a complicated problem you are solving Lewis. I’m genuinely impressed. Also, the MUte looks so damn good. I can’t wait to watch it come to life.
Hey man been a while since I caught up due to ill health. it's good to see the tailgate progress it's looking really good mate you must be proud, keep up the hard work 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Definitely proud of getting to this point and getting real excited about the first start up. Thanks for coming back and hope the health issues are over with.
If it was me young Lewis.. I’d have one of those silly flat lids to hinge up on that Ute.. then you could have it in one piece to go over the rear of tailgate top as a remake of beefy M3 deck lid. Then spoiler could be fitted to top of the hard tonneau lid too
I’ve had a look into making a hard lid in the style of the M3 boot but don’t want to hide the Ute bed straight away and need to focus on getting the car running and diving before I get sidetracked on anything else. Just wanting to get a lip for the mean time
Maybe something like the Maloo deck lid with an m3 style tail end... but the decklid only consists of the sides and back end... with the middle being open..
Definitely looked into doing something like that already, I think given how much effort I’ve put into the tub I don’t want to cover over it straight away. Possibly an episode for the future for sure though
Really enjoying this build! I know it would be a tonne of work but wonder if the tailgate would look nice with a flat top edge. I wonder if the detail you are looking for is because the top edge is arched and a little "boot-like".. Would then be hard to fit a badge, also. Either way, keen to see what solution you come up with.
Hmmm interesting ill have a look at it and see if I can’t picture what you’re saying, the badge would be the main concern but might be able to make something work
Thanks for sharing your process. The second M3 ute you build is likely to be much easier. The bottom line of the gate is taking shape very nicely. Now that you've got some structure to work with on the sides that this will sort itself out nicely as well. I'm curious (and I suspect your are too) how the top of the gate will sort itself out to look the way you want it to.
Nice work Lewis, it's really coming together now. Were you thinking something like an "is" lip on the tailgate or something bigger? A lot of pickups have a plastic trim piece on the back that juts out slightly rearward, I think the lip from a 318is would be pretty close to that OEM look.
Hey Lewis, thanks for the vids, because of you I bought myself a e30, now I have to buy a welding machine to starting fixing some rusty spots, What MIG welder would you advice for a starter welder? thankss
I’d definitely recommend a gas welder over gas less. Even cheap one can put out some good weld, buy extra sheet steel and just spend a couple of days practicing and messing around with setting. Plenty of great videos on TH-cam on how to set up a mig.

England can’t get enough of this awesome build. Great work again. It’s looking perfect already. 🇬🇧❤
Glad you’re still enjoying them

Thanks, I feel like once I sort out the tailgate the rest of the project should be fairly straight forward. That first start up is going to magical.
@@blacknightcreations Yeah. That’s going to be a momentous day. Looking forward to that video.
Looking sick, looking forward to the next stage
A couple more steps and then we get panels!!!
Left us on a cliffhanger!!
Might need a Volleys sponsorship for those welding boots 😂
100% would say yes to a volley sponsorship.

I know how it’s going to attach to the inner frame but not really sure on the top detail just yet.
So you would leave the blue tailgate as is and have the m3 details as part of deck lid .. then tailgate wouldn’t go down unless your lid up!
My partner and I have a VF Ute and it’s the same setup

Yeah I was thinking something simple like an IS lip but I know there are a lot of option out there and wanted to try a couple.
excellent progress Lewis... How about the 325i sport m-tech 1 lip spoiler?? it would defo work.. cant wait for next episode
Yeah that’s the kind of thing I was thinking, just need to test a couple out to see how they change the car
@@blacknightcreations I think the IS-lip would be a better choice. Same style as the MT1, but smaller.

I take screenshots of comments that make me smile and this is definitely one of them. Goodluck with the E30!
Can't work out whether I'd prefer to have a beer with which Lewis
Hahahaha both good options
Have ya got a link to where u bought them metal snips from??
I learnt when I worked as a roofer to only ever buy Midwest tinsnips, they can also be sharpened.
Have a tech 1 spoiler for mine but with the cutting and shutting have found the wider e28 m5 spoiler looks better on.
I’ll look into the M5 ones, might be hard to get my hands on in Australia though
First 🎉 best regards from Germany
Cheers! Finished work early or watching the episode at work?
@@blacknightcreations on vacation this week 😉

That’s just part of my videos, when I’m doing something a little more complicated I enjoy explaining the problem and how I plan to fix it.
