the government should really help us more with this. like top priority. i bought a house and had no clue about lead. and i cant afford to have it professionally done. i just figured id paint it and be done with it. the previous owners didnt mark lead as present but they had to know. so i have to risk the fine to scrape my house and paint it myself because i spent all my money on the house itself.
also i wish you would of said what to do about the mess of paint flakes in the grass. mine has been dropping for a year sinc ei moved in and i never paid much attention to it. but its everywhere. i guess rake up the dirt and bag it? i dunno
You really have to excavate and dispose of the soil. Raking will make it worse. I am in the process of striping the soil around our house. It’s a big job.

Still used in general aviation fuel (single engine prop jobs). Interesting to see what the level of people's blood is near these smaller airports. Used as a motor fuel in N. Korea, Yemen, Iraq, Algeria, and Afgh.

I'm not blaming you in particular but this sounds like a $20,000+ job. So basically the poor, who generally have decaying old houses, are screwed? I'm running into this problem with my mom's house. Now I have to worry about lead poisoning while studying to take the MCAT to get into medical school.
There's a program to help low income home owners deal with lead in their home. Google "HOME WEATHERIZATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM"
Rent an airless sprayer and apply encapsulant solutions or pre-removal lockdown solutions from Fiberlock. ~1800$ for whole house both in and out. Also you can just apply encapsulant on the contaminated soil without digging them out and putting in a plastic bag.
Remove it with Peel Away 1, wipe the area with TSP, call it a day

What about buildings built shortly after 1978? The people building them could have used paint bought prior to 1978 which contained lead. When can we really be safe in assuming there is no lead? Built in the 90s? Could still contain lead paint, right?
I heard it was available in Canada into the '90s
My thought on all this is that people shouldn't have let their houses go this long. Fresh coat of paint every 5 to 7 years. If you let it go to long, it's really hard to bring it back.
That doesn't solve the problem of lead paint being used when the home was 1st painted. It will still exist. Still have to take precautions.
You cannot just cover lead painted surface with another coats of non-lead paints. There are proper lead paint isolation solutions to be applied on the top of lead painted surfaces, but just normal paints CAN'T encapsulate lead.
That's crucial information for those who think that painting is just spry paint.

Just do a lead paint test before you do any work. The test sticks are cheap and can get them from most any paint shop and hardware store.
most paints have lead in them today....such a small amount but it is still used.
That whole process seems idiotic. Why not just spray a viscous liquid on it pre scrape. With the right viscosity, dust wouldn't be an issue at all, and it would help stop chips from flaking away for better control

I'll tell you exactly why. Lead was first used in paint because it preceded the use of titanium dioxide as a white color.
So why didn't titanium dioxide complete phase out lead use? Because lead is a byproduct of zinc and silver mining. It gets mined regardless. That means the mining industry needs to get rid of it, there is more lead mined as a byproduct than there usually are buyers.
That's why lead was used, it was cheap for the mining industry, they wanted to get rid of it. That is why TODAY, lead is still found in Africa in paint. It's a cheap byproduct.
In fact, lead is present in most white paint in minuscule amounts, because most white paint uses small amounts of zinc as a stabilizer (even when the main pigment is titanium dioxide). Because when you mine zinc you get lead, taking out every lead particle would be a monumental task that would drive up the cost of white paint. But the amounts of lead in white paint containing zinc is so small that it is basically harmless. Still, in california for example, most zinc white paint will have a warning that it contains lead, even if the amounts are minuscule. The paint will have the Environmetal Hazard sign with the fish and the dead tree, and it will say "WARNING: This product contains lead."

Blah blah blah. Just clean the paint off with paint stripper then prime and paint. Call it a day. No need for professionals

Then a week later wonder why you feel like crap, and go have your blood checked and find your lead levels are off the chart and the doc tells you it's most likely moved into your bone marrow probably giving you early arthritis and he recommends hospitalization for chelation treatment and hopefully it can bring your levels down.
So yeah...you do it your way Archangel dude and let's see how it turns out for ya.. There ain't nothin sissy bout safety.
