Yeah, it seems a bit cruel to resort to violence for something like this since in this situation, he hadn't hurt anyone, but you're right that things are far worse today.
Well, no, that is actually against the rules of deadly force that are used to justify a lawful killing. You need opportunity, capability, and intent. Him just having the sword would grant them capability, but unless he charges at them, they couldn't justify to the other two, which means if they shot him just for brandishing a weapon that can only be used at close range, they would be at fault, and it would be obvious.
Reminds me of an SCP called "the sword of apparent invincibility" It gave the wielders the delusion that the sword was all powerful, when really it was a poorly crafted weapon.
To me this situation was an example of complete police incompetence and overreach, the man did nothing and had to endure all of this for no reason other than the suspicions of officers. Terrible situation and I feel terrible for the man
big giant agree, man. theres people bringing up his past crimes as if its the reason he was pinned down in the first place, or as if it excuses the police's incompetence smh

@goldensupporterIjust a tip: doing annoying shit like that does nothing good for you. Maybe a few people will go and block you or something, but I swear on my life nobody gives a shit (at least, not in a good way) about you saying that.
Wow this is wild. I never thought I'd hear about this story again. I lived in the neighborhood where this happened in Seattle when it occurred and have a little more info. Tony was well known and pretty harmless considering his katana. He never drew it unless he felt his life or the life of others was being threatened. He was a huge dude too, so seemed pretty imposing. I didn't know him well or even at all, but I passed him on the street multiple times. I heard people saying that he had a "mental illness" at the time and thinking back about his actions and demeanor, maybe he was on the autism spectrum. I never knew what happened to him after the standoff, but if he is in fact still alive, I'd consider that a miracle considering the way that the police treat homeless people, let alone defensively armed homeless people. Thanks for sharing this!
I feel really bad for Tony. He didn’t really do anything wrong, he was just afraid and confused and mentally ill. I’m glad the cops didn’t hurt him too badly.
@@mildlymarvelousobviously you can't walk around with a huge katana, and once the offduty cop realized there was also something wrong with them, it was very reasonable to try to apprehend and disarm him

@@ChristianPeytavin they will easily rupture and completely destroy testicles. There was a dude hit in the balls during one of the infamous george floyd "curfews" where the police in a lot of cities marched around areas that were completely peaceful and werent rioting or even protesting and were demamding that citizens return home and stay inside. It basically exploded his testicle. And of course the cops got off scott free. (In case anyone mentions it, im not referring to the actual riots. There are long montages of cops using absurd force on innocent bystanders in areas that had no rioting whatsoever. The reason i specify is because the news didnt give much coverage to that part of the news at all and if you weren't paying close attention at the time you would have missed it. They were doing crazy shit like shooting rubber bullets at people in their windows and on their balconies, pushing down (and subsequently murdering) old people, and apparently even shooting men in the testicles.
seattle has a big problem with mental health problems, drug problems, and homelessness. i just went to vietnamesetown yesterday and there were probably at least 4 people dancing around like samurai’s on each street. it can be entertaining for some people, but when you go to a city like that and see how much they’re struggling, its just… heartbreaking.
The west coast has this problem for sure. I've seen it in north and Southern Oregon and plenty talk about California housing inequality. It's more than heartbreaking, is infuriating. Poor Street Samurai must have been waiting for his Johnson to show up to get his payday and Lone Star pulled up on him. Shadowrunners got it rough in Seattle, UCAS.
@@fishie3799 Where does it say they do NO harm? Last I checked they are called LESS than lethal, meaning they are not classified as weapons designed to kill someone innately.
I mean yeah, a beanbag gun doesn't feel good to be popped by, but they have been using those for many years before elevating to lethal force. Lethal force was not authorized on this man until he did an act of violence, with the sword, which he never had done, it was just a standoff. Not saying the beanbag doesn't harm you, but it feels a lot better to get hit by a beanbag than by a bullet, and in this case, they couldn't shoot him, so what would you suggest they do?
Hey, it is literally the only rule in a sword fight, schizophrenia is a scary because those people can become an entirely unique personality and this guy may have deadass turned into a samurai for 11 plus hours that had real military level understanding of sword fights which is hilarious, which would explain why he acted like an actual rock when they shot him with the hose which is hilarious, and when he got hit with the sandbags he acted like it was arrows or something which was hilarious because he looks like a cave man vs a gun, he had no clue what was hitting him, and you guessed it, this made everything quite laughably hilarious indeed.
But that’s why throwing swords is a more new idea, people carried knives and darts if they needed to throw something back then, or they would just use bows and have short swords on their waist
Are you out of your mind? Have you seen One Piece? In the right hands a blade such as that wielded by a master swordsman could split mountains. The risk was just too great to not bring an armored car.
I like the idea that all of those cops didnt do anything for 11 hours, not out of protocol, but because they weren't sure what technique he would unleash on them. Lol
it is quite usual that WAY too many police officers arrive for a minor thing. the other day, a guy was on the rails, hiding something in the wall, turns out they found him almost immediately and he was just playing geocashing. didnt stop two dozens of policemen arriving hours later just to check.

this is not the first time Ive seen this man, I probably seen him on the news when I was a teen, but seeing him again, I have to say he deserves 110% of my respect. what a fucking warrior, he might not have been mentally sane or a real samurai, but he definitely had the spirit and the strenght, how remarquable. And all he did was strolling around with a sword minding his own business, while the cops totally over-reacted
Not really. While I don't think the off duty cop should've tailed him for however long he did to arouse suspicion to the samurai, the police did do their job. Guy had a weapon out, tho he didn't make any moves it's still a weapon being wielded in public. They can't just go away without resolving the situation.
@@dragondrakage2402 From what you can see in the video, he looks like hes wearing the scabbard on his back, so I was thinking the sword was sheated until he noticed the the first officer stalking him. Feel free to correct me on that if im wrong. But then his mental problems just surfaced and he draw the sword reacting to a man he did not know and who was following him. Of course police had to do their job at this point, for that man's safety and the public. Im just trying to see from that man's perspective for a moment. Who knows if he was carrying the sword to show a friend or something like that? I know someone who did exactly this, because she came to our workplace with her sword strapped to her back to show me. Maybe he did not have any ill intent at all and was just triggered by the whole situation. That must have been stressful for him, probably enough for hallucinations and stuff like that. Ofc I dont know this at all, maybe he was out for trouble that day after all and the first officer was justified to follow him but I think just his look, the way hes dressed had a big impact combined with the presence of a katana. It would be nice to have more information about his story.
@gd7663 that's what I meant. Police weren't called til the guy took his weapon out. Question is how long the off duty cop tailed him for. Can't say I blame the guy from being spooked, but just mentioning at the end of the day the police were doing their jobs.
The real problem is that if he gets to have a sword and walk around with it, so will everyone else, and we aren't allowed to have any fun of course so it's just unacceptable.
The "textbook" remark might be referring to how ESU units in Japan (called Kidoutai) use a mancatcher tool called a Sasumata, in a similar way to the way the ladder was used here, in conjunction with riot shields to pin violent suspects. It's a fairly common training scenario there for dealing with knife attackers and so on, so it's possible (given the thematic appropriateness regarding the samurai here) that someone on the Seattle department could have seen it in an informational video or something and gotten the idea off of that.
@@fcantil I remember reading somewhere that there have been a lot of suggestions over many years for them to get adopted in the US but, for some reason or another, it hasn't happened yet. I'm kind of foggy on the details sadly. Can't quite remember where I read it. Yeah, it seems a bit cruel to resort to violence for something like this since in this situation, he hadn't hurt anyone, but you're right that things are far worse today.
Shut up.

(In case anyone mentions it, im not referring to the actual riots. There are long montages of cops using absurd force on innocent bystanders in areas that had no rioting whatsoever. seattle has a big problem with mental health problems, drug problems, and homelessness. i just went to vietnamesetown yesterday and there were probably at least 4 people dancing around like samurai’s on each street. it can be entertaining for some people, but when you go to a city like that and see how much they’re struggling, its just… heartbreaking.

Lethal force was not authorized on this man until he did an act of violence, with the sword, which he never had done, it was just a standoff. As a fan of swordsmanship in general, I can only admire Apollo's commitment, focus, and sheer will to keep hold of his blade for as long as he did.

@@dragondrakage2402 yes, I think we both agree on that
The real problem is that if he gets to have a sword and walk around with it, so will everyone else, and we aren't allowed to have any fun of course so it's just unacceptable.
That also reminded me of those mancatchers. I don't see why more countries use it. It could get pretty useful for situations like this.
