Adyashanti - Finding Your Own Integrity Q&A

  • Adyashanti responds to a questioner who writes in asking about the role that responsibility plays in freedom. How can you be sure that the ego doesn’t hijack your motives and twist them into something else? By getting in touch with a deep integrity that resides within you, responsibility flowers into being, and self-obsession naturally dissolves away. Adyashanti brings you back to your natural concern for the world around you-how that keeps you grounded-and the infinite potential that lives within each of you.

    Quotes from this video:
    “When we really experience genuine unity, then we really do experience that all beings and all things are not apart from us-that in their most fundamental sense, they are us.”
    “The aspect of spirituality that is concerned about the world around us is very important because it keeps you honest and it keeps spirituality real, and it’s the protectant to spirituality becoming an object of the self-centered ego.”
    “An immature idea of freedom is that it’s the freedom to do whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it, irrespective of the consequences or the effect it has on others. That’s actually a delusion. That’s really not freedom. That’s the mind’s idea of freedom. That’s the ego using freedom in order to indulge in its own self-obsession.”
    “Part of becoming conscious is also becoming more and more aware of that orienting principle inside-what I call one’s integrity.”
    “Freedom does come with responsibility.”

    I want to say I admire this man but I am seeing now that I'd be missing the message . It's not this man that I admire so much as the man that is "missing " and simply made way for consciousness /awareness. All that said, this man is beautiful.

    I totally agree. Thanks for this. I've seen this not only in the spiritual community but just in general. People who claim to be "Free" and have what they call "Fun" with their sexual advances but pay no mind to those they hurt along the way. You're right, it is a delusion.

    i think once we can really grasp the idea and concept that everything is connected then we naturally become more aware of how spirituality works and more mindful but ego will always play its part but thats how we grow in wisdom and intuition 💗

    So much gratitude and happiness for what is being said here... "True conscious comes as flowers, as a product of a deeper and deeper state of consciousness". Now this one simple observation, if taken, could cure the malady that has beset Christianity since its inception. The "fruits of the Spirit" do not happen through human will, or effort. They only happen through the movement of realization into the knowledge of one's Self. This is what Jesus referred to as being "born again". (And if you should try and force them apart from this self realization? Just look around the world today in the forms of society and religion, and you will have your answer.)

    On a larger scale, I have seen on social media one day posting a saying from buddha or Lao Tzu and the next the same person, posting a picture supporting donald trump with machine guns. Right now, there is a lot of confusion happening. The ego is taking that spiritual wisdom and twisting it for itself. It seems like complete misunderstanding. I am making an effort to help, but I am still in a flux of awakening. I am doing the best that I can, but some days I feel like i am being stretched apart. Which, perhaps I should be celebrating. Thank you these videos are quite helpful.

      The only way to truly know a person is to observe how they live their lives, especially when they don't know they're being watched... so there you go, social media are quite the opposite of that : it's all about the mood swing of the moment and the instant gratification one gets from the likes and replies. It's irrelevant at best.

    I'm trying to find that balance. After my awakening I have fears coming up like showing interest and being assertive with women because in the past I wouldn't think twice and now I worry too much about being respectful and I end up being passive. Wish me luck lol.

    • @Dowlphin
      @Dowlphin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You start to perceive/experience something as a problem, so you venture into its opposite. Eventually you might realize that balance brings health and that what you perceived as a problem was none in itself, but only in its severity of expression.
      1) experience suffering -> 2) transcend suffering -> 3) accept suffering. Phase 2 can be a really nasty trap. But don't worry. It's natural. Just keep riding the train, so to speak. And remember that that nasty trap is not evil.

    • @Jamz2k
      @Jamz2k 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s because you only have self-interest. You have to find in yourself genuine interest in well-being of others and not just women and it will naturally show up in the way you interact without any effort. No woman in her right mind would turn down this kind of energy. Thank you for sharing your experience here.

    Some might think of it as some kind of formless ego being but when the mind becomes floating light with joy it may start to get somewhat silly and wish to disarm others stiffness with humor into the formless to share that joy of being. Unfortunately some cant handle such micky takes and go on being dreary serious.

  • @joshtheegotist

    The ego is as free as Being to do whatever it is capable of. There are no rules on sexual conduct. What does being monogamous have to do with Being? Adya kind of sidestepped the sexual issue. But I won't. So what if someone lives apart from puritanical conditioning?
    Even if the ego takes freedom in a mere fragmented and selfish manner, what of it? Who cares? Only an ego would. Only an ego wants to wants to chop up, and pick apart human behavior to judge it. But even an ego being selfish is still just another expansion and manifestation of Being. One means One means One means One. No behavioral expectations, just One. Even behavioral expectations are One. When you get lost in such oneness, behavior is irrelevant. Just as irrelevant as Bowser kidnapping the Princess in Mario world.
    An awakened individual can see the complete beauty not in the perfections of existence, but in the imperfections as well. Do your dance, who cares? I don't care if you're Hitler or Mother Theresa. There is only one. Being is not just love. Being is hate. And beyond.
    True freedom is not being a well behaved celebate monk or a sexual deviant, true freedom is not seeing any difference between the two. Then the ego, having boundless freedom, plenty of space, can dissolve like the unreality it is. Once an expectation of behavior arrives, the ego is suddenly enlivened with an illusory conflict. "I am wrong" "I am being selfish" " I am being egotistical" and blah blah blah. Be selfish if that is your dance. Be selfless if that is your dance. These are not qualifiers for awakening.
    Behavior expectations and morality is childish. Get out of that box.

      "I don't care if you're Hitler or Mother Theresa." That's bullshit. You do care. Try being on the side where Hitler is forcing the mass extinction of your family and friends. Yes, it is all a dream - composed of thoughts... But some thoughts bring a sad and miserable dream, while others bring a happy and loving dream. (That is the choice.) And if it is applicable to you, it is applicable to all. Please take your "advance knowledge" and throw it all away - as it is pure rubbish.

      It could be beneficial to actually investigate where your perspective is rooted.
      It may not be obvious to you but your entire speech was pure ego trying to protect itself from destruction.
      Tie up a chicken in front of you, sit down with it and meditate for one hour. When the timer goes off, pick up a knife and cut the chickens head off. Sit back down in front of the dead chicken and meditate for one more hour.
      The point that i'm trying to share is that there actually IS wisdom and insight around these topics of what is right or wrong. One just has to be willing to prostrate oneself, wholly devoted to truth above all else in order to have glimpses of the ultimate reality.
      I'll share it with you though because I'm that kinda person. Sex is not part of the ultimate reality. In fact, sexual misconduct is the reason we are still here scratching our heads.
      Meditations on body contemplation can be really helpful to rebuild the original disgust inherent to That One Who Knows regarding the physical body.
      Impurity is impurity. The mind cannot be trusted until it's in complete submission to That One Who Knows.

      I've actually had a similar thought go through my mind, but you know, it's just our cultural conditioning and it's not an indication of anything I think. People age at different rates at different times. Maybe he'll look the same 15 years from now and then we'll say oh he doesn't look like he's 70 at all. It's really not an indication of anything (sometimes, and I'm not saying you do this, but there's this implication of you cannot look old relatively early if you have lead a truly spiritual life because it keeps you young, or something like that)
