  • This video will explore Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Supportability (R.A.M.S.) within the context of a model. This will allow stakeholder groups to see that it isn't just a technical perspective on Reliability Engineering, but a complete picture in which to bring stakeholders together in their thinking and consideration of value delivery.
Structured Change brings together Asset Management and Change Management principles in order to deliver sustained Asset Management excellence to organizations.

hi Martin thank you for sharing this nice presentation, just a question though. Doesn't RAMS stand for: Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety according for instance to the EN 50126 (railway) ? cheers

Sandro, I like to think that Safety is inherent in everything we do...(In our decisions and our actions). I view the "S" as "Supportability"...Eg it is one thing to have spare parts for our system but if they are located on the other side of the globe they aren't very useful or accessible to support "Availability"

It may be interesting talking about supportability, but, at the end the S of RAMS stands for Safety, otherwise it is confusing. Safety is not always included. You may treat Safety first, including hazard analysis and then fix the availability numbers.

Francisco, you highlight an interesting debate we often have here in Australia. On one side people prefer to see the "S" (or RAMS) represent safety whereas others view safety as being inherent in everything we do across the life cycle (Design, Operations, Maintenance and Support (Warehousing, Sourcing etc). As a person who came through reliability using FMECA and Task Hazard Assessment for Design, Operations and Maintenance I prefer the latter. An example I use is that if we store a spare part in a warehouse to support an asset how do we ensure that it is safely stored, is fit for purpose and there are work instructions stored with it for lifting points etc? This is how I explain that Safety is a concern across all the perspectives of RAMS. Thank you very much for taking the time to comment. When it comes to safety I believe that the outcome is sometimes more important that the definition. Regards Martin

Sandro b I see at standing for "Supportability" as Safety should be inherent in everything we do...(System Safety, Asset Safety, Work Safety etc). Thnaks for taking the time to review.
