Cool piece-and fascinating. It seems like a prototype for some his later pieces like the Freeman Etudes. This aesthetic works really well as a depiction of Ophelia's madness. I'm curious if he composed this with chance procedures like his later works or if he had to make more of the choices himself...
When I listen to pieces like this I always question: Do we take them seriously because of the name attached? Are they even recorded because it's by John Cage? ... there are so many brilliant pieces being written today that are unheard, unpublished, not-recorded simply because the composer is unknown and not "John Cage". I think sometimes we give too much merit to the name and not the actual piece of music.
Cage is not a musician, not a composer, he isn't anything, he is just a narcissist, a cult leader, someone who wishes to imprint *himself* onto music, not to improve the world of music as a whole. This piece is no different from the rest as a testament to that. It is simply random noise. Something a 4 year old can, and has produced by mindlessly banging their hands on the keyboard.
And don't go "erm ackhtually" a 4 year old literally can and has played something equivalent to the random noise by simply randomly slamming his hands on a keyboard.

Well said!
Incredibly based
Agreed. This sounds like something I improvised as a teenager. The only difference is that I didn't bother to write it down.
Couldn’t agree more. This sounds like what any competent composer could just randomly play.
Incredibly well said
sodelicious..............
Cage loved Satie even before knowing his music, i see
Distinctly baffled by the people claiming *this* piece is ‘just noise’. My god
Parts here and there almost sound like sketches for The Rite of Spring.
Biggest compliment to the rite of spring:
idk man i just like cage for no other reason but the music sounds nice to me simple
1:10 i like
Erik Satie part 2
why
Can you say the same thing regarding Cy Twombly?
compression/stretching of rests and poor rhythm overall make this a frustrating performance

Wow its really great to see you are enjoying cage and putting aside time in your day to listen to him!
