In Russia, the alphabet (алфавит) is also called the azbuka (азбука). The alphabet is the first two letters of the Greek alphabet "alpha" and "beta". And "azbuka" is the first two letters of the Cyrillic alphabet "az" and "buki".

In Ukrainian we call it абетка (abetka) that also means two first letters :)

Side note: the Armenian alphabet (which uses a script that is neither Latin nor Cyrillic but also derived from old Greek script) is called "ajbuben" in Armenian, after the first two letters "ajb" and "ben"

It is kinda funny how only Bulgarian has "az" to reffer as "I." While the rest use the last alphabet from the Cyrillic alphabet - "Я." Or in Latin "ja" or "jac" (Macedonian), despite in some dialects we have "яз" (jaz) and and "я" (ja) as to refer to "I." Even though in most cases in Bulgarian/Macedonian "я" and "ja" are used as pronouns of feminine like to her. For example: "Ще я направиш ли я задачата?" [Will (it) you make (it) the exercise?]

Even though your main religion is still Catholicism like all Slavic countries who use Latin alphabet (except Serbia, Montenegro & Bosnia & Herzegovina which use both Cyrillic and Latin even if they are the Catholic, despite in Bosnia & Herzegovina there live as minority.)
What I mean is Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian & Montenegrin used to be called "Serbo-Croatian" during Yugoslavia but split apart and "became" different languages even if these 4 languages are more similar to each other than Czech & Slovak lol. Most people will tell you the difference is regional and political mainly and not actual one. Serbian & Croatian may have more differences compared to let's say Bosnian & Montenegrin but pretty much most think they are like British, American and Australian English.

Most of these languages are intelligible with no issues just politics and religion division. Croatian could be a bit more different than Serbian and the rest but still 80%+ similar.
I think Bosnians are bit like the Croats too - they have Cyrillic but 99% of the times they use Latin mainly because they don't want to promote Serbian nationalism and that's why. The Montenegrin alphabet has 2 letters that the rest don't have З́ (Ź), С́ (Ś). They are like an equivalent of SJ/СJ & ЗJ/ZJ.

To help foreigners to understand the Serbian Cyrillic Alphabet,if you learn these 30 letters, you can read and write Serbian no problem(it's fully phonetic, unlike Russian nor it has digraphs unlike Polish)although I would suggest you to learn Serbian with Latin Alphabet first as it may be easier. A E K M O T should be easy,В И Ј Н P С У Х may seem similar to English letters, but they are not(in order V I Y N R S U H) some may seems scary, but they exist in English as well Б Г Д З Л П Ф(B G D Z L P F) and others Ђ(this one is similar to Italian G in like Giorno)Ж(this one is like French J)Њ(this one is like Spanish N with ~ on top of it)Ћ(this one is like Italian C in Ciao, this one is most commonly found on end of Serbian last names)Ц(ts sound)Ч(ch sound, like in Chocolate)Џ(this one is like English J,Serbian Cyrillic is 1 of 2 Slavic alphabets that have this as independent letter instead of using digraph ДЖ or Dž)Ш(sh sound)Љ is only one that I don't know to what to compare in Western languages,it's common in Slavic languages.

For those who don't know about the usage of Jj (iot) is used to replace letters of the Russian alphabet, such as Яя (Ya), Ээ (Ye), Ыы (Yi), Ёё (Yo), Юю (Yu). Basically, J sounds like Y. For example, the name Jelena (Јелена) is pronounced iê-le-na. In Serbian, we say Ја (Ya) "Я", Је (Ye) "Э", Ји (Yi) "Ы", Јо (Yo) "Ё" , Ју (Yu) "Ю"

    • @David280GG
      @David280GG 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

J in the latin alphabet was originally meant to be a short I and pronounced as it is in the slavic languages, thats why J and I look so similar.
Y is an adaptation of the greek letter ypsilon (Υ υ) and was pronounced as I but with closed lips
For some reason english switched J to Y and DŽ to J

@@Saber23 No, Cyrillic is used just as much as Latin here in Serbia. The differences are notable in the northern (Vojvodina) and southern parts of the country. In Vojvodina, there are 4 official languages - and 3.5 are written in Latin script. Whilst in the south and central SRB, where only "true Serbians" live - Cyrillic is the major script. Of course, this does not mean that Cyrillic isn't used in the north nor that Latin isn't used in the south. In Belgrade I'd say that Latin is a bit more dominant 'cause it is certainly more international and Belgrade is the center of international events in Serbia.

It is easier if you have someone to practise with. Or if you are familiar with Brazilian Portuguese: you can hear ћ (gente) and ђ (tarde) there. Ђ is even softer than the one in Italian 'giorno': after pronouncing the Italian one, lean the tip of your tongue down the back of your lower front teeth, press your teeth against each other and try again - there you have it! And ћ is also softer than in 'ciao' - try the same thing with the tip of your tongue while pronouncing this Italian sound to get it right. For Џ, which is harder than in 'giorno', do not use the whole surface of your tongue to touch the hard palate - touch it with the tip of your tongue right where you can feel the palate become rough, i.e. 1cm away from your upper front teeth. The same goes for Ч (also harder than in 'ciao') - start the practise with 'ciao' and change the position of the tongue. Hope this helps. :)

It is mostly common in south slavic languages, Like: Serbian, Croat, Bosnian, Montenegrin (by some people recognized as one language, Serbo-Croat), Macedonian and Slovene (ofcourse other slavic languages too).

      That’s why many letters look like the Hellenic alphabet: Α, Β, Γ, Κ, Η, Ν, Υ, Μ, Χ, Φ
In the past Russian also had Θ but they stopped using it.

@@Kolious_Thrace Cyril and Methodius' true origin is still unknown but they are half Greeks (Vyzantines) for sure. But it was made in the First Bulgarian tsardom - the Glagolic script in Veliki Preslav and then when after Cyril dies his students in honour of him create the so known Cyrillic script. They also were translating books from Greek into Slavic language too but yeah it is influenced from mainly on Greek for sure.
But the irony is the Fyromanian guy who is a chauvinist "Macedonian" doesn't know that FYROM was created in 1944 and it has nothing to do with your Greek Macedonia. And FYROM at that time was part of the 1st Bulgarian tsardom.
