  • A 43lb Salmon being landed on the Alta river in Norway. Storlax is the term for "Big Salmon" and this was one of the best fights for any salmon I've seen.

    Fine fish and a job well done.
    Aside from salmon and steelhead fishing I build wooden boats.
    Can you tell me anything about that beautiful boat?

      I'm sorry, but not sure about this boat. Hopefully some of the guys who work there will comment. What I can say is , for narrow canoes, They are fairly stable.

      I would also like to know more about these boats, specifically the outboard/jet setup. I guide in Newfoundland, Canada on Gander River and operate a Gander River boat everyday during our Salmon season. Our boats are much the same as these, 25' long with most people running either 20hp fourstroke outboards, or 25hp two stroke outboards. Im very curious how these boats operate in rougher waters with the jet outboard.
      Ian, is there any way you can give me a contact email for the guides or if this was at a lodge? Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Another question Ian:
    when you fish this bigwater are you casting underhand or Spey?

    • @IanGordonsalmonfishing
      @IanGordonsalmonfishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm using a combination of both. The line I was using was 50' plus a polyleader.. This worked really well.

    Why did it take so long to release the fish- what a palava- more photographers than anglers!

  • @Kevinohanlons
    @Kevinohanlons 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why can't the angler just get out and follow the fish from the bank? It all seems so awkward

      A lot easier to play it from the boat. You can follow the movement of the fish and angle the line a lot better to put pressure.

    Incredible fish! They don’t get that big here in Nova Scotia unfortunately.
    Looks like there is some pretty harsh comments, most likely from people who have never been hooked up to an Atlantic, it is never easy to land these fish. The guys commenting are probably used to fishing small mouth bass with a hot dog on the hook.. haha

    • @IanGordonsalmonfishing
      @IanGordonsalmonfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, thanks for the positive comment. it really was a great fish and handled well. The comments are all part and parcel of the internet. I’ve seen so many experts with the greatest ideas ever on here but In The thick of the action, most wouldn’t have a clue what to do with a fish like this. It was a wonderful experience to be there to watch the epic fight and see it landed and returned.

      John Macpherso Hi John, I’ve taken people to Norway over the past 5 years and lucky enough to fish here on Alta. However, other than the lottery, there’s not much chance to access this amazing river.
      There are some good places to try for a big fish but you need to be in or around the ‘right time’ drop me a mail to speyonline@gmail.com and I’ll give you a few ideas.

    Once you get into the 30lb plus class. The fish is basically in charge of the fight

  • @roimari

    Why wont the angler step of from the boat? Then you can keep the line angle lower and just rewerse the fish to the guide who nets it..

    • @Sondre_Husby
      @Sondre_Husby 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its because if it runs down you got to use the boat to keep up whit the fish, this river has a lot of twists and turns and also qwite hard to walk along so you use the boat to follow the fish
      down

    I cant' understand only 4 minutes to revive and weigh twice after an 18 minute fight! Caught an 8lb Salmon on the River Towy - held him for 11 minutes to revive - released my grip very gently and 4 minutes later the fished moved away slowly.

    • @IanGordonsalmonfishing

      All fish are different. Most i release after 30 seconds to a minute. Some that have been played along time and are really tired need to be held longer.

    Had he got out of the boat and worked the fish from the side rather than pulling on it straight from its position the fish would have landed far sooner and easier...

      I'll 2nd that.Get out of the boat, and fight the fish hard so you can quickly release him!

      look at the ground they are walking on, he is a big guy, the ghillies obviously know what they are doing , they also had too much line out to get out the boat..

    Count your blessi.....uhm..backing. Fight him sideways pointing towards the bank to get him out of the current....But as a guide, you're supposed to shut up...

    Absolute amateur on the net.

    • @IanGordonsalmonfishing
      @IanGordonsalmonfishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Facetious1 A harsh comment as, when the fish was coming to the net and looked easy, just at the moment he moved the net toward the fish it turned and went deep. He simply didn’t want to take the chance. Then the fish cam really Co lose to the boat. I reckon, given what Asia saw, and having netted 1000s myself, he did not a bad job. I was willing him to put it into the net but if you could see what I did, like him, you would not have taken a chance with such a fish.

      What ever about the nets man the man playing the fish was pathetic he should watch how Michael Frodin plays a big fish before he goes there again

    • @roimari
      @roimari 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, you should stay still and wait the angler to steer the fish to you. If you move the fish will swim away.

    Why didn't he want or get to hold his fish for a few seconds (underwater of course)? I don't know if this was a guided trip so i won't speak towards this exact situation, but i have heard of European outfitters doing this sometimes with salmon. Which To me it seems almost absurd. In a community that uses barbed doubles, trebles, ( Im coming from the world of steelheading. where such stuff is insanely uncommon in fly fishing. Single hooks almost exclusively and many times barbless as by law) and takes the time to use a weighing scale. which can bring further stress to a fish and often uses harmful nets, and lifts the fish out of water etc. Btw im looking down my nose. Im sure your fish are none the worse for wear. i just think its silly that not letting a client hold a fish by the tail underwater for 5 seconds is the first thing to change for the fishes safety.

      Hi Michael, He did have a picture taken with the fish. This was his 13th fish of over 40lbs, he has been lucky over the 20 years he has been privileged enough to fish the river. Coming from Scotland where C&R has been routinely practiced for around 20 years I saw nothing wrong with what went down here. The boatmen are all experienced Alta guides who have been born and brought up on the river. I guess there are cultural differences between us. I'm not sure those Alta guides would agree with single hooks. During this trip I asked if I could fish with one, no was the answer. You and I both know a single hook is fine and we'd be happy with it, however, "when in Rome". I'm sure no harm came of the fish and although the population is poor compared with the good old days, its still pretty good. I think each to their own. How are things in the world of Steelhead right now?

    Fished the alta last year, caught a chunky 15 pounder. When you're fishing there in the quiet summer nights you don't even need a license haha. Never paid a single kroner for salmon fishing in norway

      Whilst it is the case at times on many of the world's salmon rivers, I'm not sure that's correct here. There are a few very expensive weeks, but the local folks get to fish this river via a lottery system that's really quite inexpensive.

    I was very perturbed at the inability as guides on the greatest salmon river in the world. 3 misses at the net. Ridiculous. I'll offer myself to guide there, because guess what? I'm not incompetent like them!

      Kent Vogel hi Kent, to be fair, he was really quite unlucky with the fish. Twice it was coming to the net perfectly, but just as he moved the not the fish turned away and, quite rightly, he didn’t want to take a lunge/chance. Only when The fish then came close to the boat did the rod get its head up properly. I’ve netted 1000s and honestly felt he did well.
