It's a shift in the culture over the last 50 years that's leading to misunderstanding. In the 60's it was perfectly normal for a man to address a full-grown woman as "Girl", and a younger woman as "Little Girl". This has changed due to the early leaders of the Women's Rights movement, who declared that "Girl" was a demeaning and degrading term. They equated it with a Southerner addressing a black man as "Boy". It's calling someone something less than yourself, and after a while women weren't about to put up with that shit any more.
And when John Kaye tells the girl to close her eyes, it isn't because he's about to get freaky. He's telling her to let go of the reality around her and enjoy the (LSD) trip she's about to take. That's the whole point of this song: he's saying take the trip, expand your mind, see what wonders are waiting for you inside this sugar cube.
Shroomy is an appropriate description, but in my day we would've called it 'cidley. The visuals were supposed to replicate what drug-induced hallucinations looked like. They failed. The only time I've seen a realistic acid trip on film was the Do Lung Bridge scene from 'Apocalypse Now'. Every time I watch that scene the lights flicker, and I get a funny little tingle in my tongue.
And "Hypnototical Blipdeblotical" is without question the word of the day. Did I spell that right?

I had some hobbies where I interacted with a lot of men. I am female and don't identify as otherwise. One time we were all saying "dude," (well, this is California) but it made some people in an older generation get upset because they thought it was offensive (to me) but in my mind we were just saying "wazzup." Nobody was calling me "a dude." LOL

An American/,International band. Originally one Austrian born, two Canadians, two Californians. In this video we're shown John Kay,vocals - & Nick St.Nicholas, bass both from Germany - Californian, Michael Monarch on guitar - Canada's Jerry Edmonton on drums, and Goldy McJohn on keys. On the song we hear it's John,Jerry,Michael,Goldy, and original bassist, Rushton Moreve, with the rythm guitar on the exotic loop in the middle by Jerry's brother, Dennis aka Mars Bonfire. What did you think of Nick's pajamas and Goldy's hair? Pretty cool in 1968. Lady in the video is Jutta Mauve-Kay, John's wife. Still married over 50 years!

I met these guys in January 1972 dude was working and going to school . When they left to return to New York they bought a 1958 red and white Thunderbird from my dad. Lol I didn't realize who they were until I went to their place on my 17th birthday. I'm so glad I was born in 1955. I've met a lot of very cool people in my lifetime. It really does make getting older worth it. Lol

Who did you meet from the band? This would've been right before they announced that they were breaking up on Valentine's Day 1972, the band for all intents and purposes was dead already late 1971. Did you meet John Kay?

  • @ambermiller4362

I saw them in concert, probably in 1990. There was a State Fair next to the stadium and after the concert we went to the fair..it was late, close to closing, not many people there. The band came over to the fair as well.. we ran into them and hung out with them for a couple hours. The fair stayed open for us.. we played games and rode everything... and drank and smoked weed lmao. It was freakin awesome!!!!!

This was before 1970 , or the stone ages. Back then , the great U.S Rock n Roll bands were outnumbered 10 to 1 by the British bands , and they were one of them ! 😎

The woman in the video is his wife Jutta. "I like to dream, right between the sound machine" is from back in the day getting a new stereo and listening between the speakers. Very cool couple who are still together today.

Country singer songwriter Hoyt Axton (the dad from Gremlins) wrote a few hit songs for Steppenwolf, including "The Pusher".. which Hoyt does his own amazing version of.. might be fun checking out both versions. Hoyt's mom was also a songwriter.. who wrote songs for Elvis among others.
