Hey Jessica! The walnut hourglass mcspadden is the one I acquired couple weeks ago I just tuned it to cfcc also capo 1 it's very rich sounding might be my favorite tuning yet!! Thanks again your always very helpful I appreciate it so much
Beautiful! I’ve been watching a lot of dulcimer videos and am so fascinated by this instrument that I bought one at the Dulcimer Shoppe in Mountain View last week. It’s all walnut also and I’m loving it! Watching you play motivates me to build up those callouses and learn to play myself.
Thank you, Hobiegal! I am glad that you have discovered the mountain dulcimer. :-) I think you'll find that those dulcimer calluses are generally a little softer than the ones you get from a guitar, especially if you're playing a McSpadden.
Thank you so much, Claudio! This is one of my favorite songs to play, and I am glad that came across! You can't think too hard while you play it; you just have to feel it! :-)
Wow, I discovered that beautiful instrument thanks to this video several months ago. I started to listen to many dulcimer recordings after that, and today I'm buying my first dulcimer at McSpadden's ! Yours sounds amazing ! I know that's a full walnut one, but what kind of strings is it ? Cheers from Montreal, QC !
Gwendal Combot Congratulations, Gwendal! I am happy that you have discovered the beauty of the mountain dulcimer. Thank you so much. :-) Yes, this instrument is an all walnut McSpadden, and I'm using strings designed for mixolydian tuning (D-A-D or C-G-C, Treble = .10 mm, Middle =.14 mm, Bass = .23 mm), but I'm playing in C-F-C with a capo on the first fret. Enjoy your dulcimer journey!
It’s pronounced the same way as “Como” in “Perry Como.” Some people place the emphasis on the second syllable, and I rarely correct them since I am sure this pronunciation is closer to the original! :-)
Thank you Jessica. Where do you get your music? Do you tab them out??? Do you have any books you have done to sell? I admire your style and choice of music. My best, Gary
Thank you, Gary! I'm glad you enjoy my music. :-) I gather my songs from a variety of sources, especially the music I enjoying listening to (Medieval/Renaissance, Celtic, traditional folk, world, Asian). Occasionally I tab some of my pieces; I actually did tab a version of "Dheanainn Sugradh" for a class I taught last summer, but it is a different version from the one I play here. The tab is in D-A-C.
Hello Mister Maggie! I thought you might like to know about my new book and DVD set "Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers," which includes arrangements of "Dheannain Sugradh." You can find out more here: th-cam.com/video/UxVnyOs4BIs/w-d-xo.html
***** Did you go to Mountain View to pick it out? I've noticed many excellent players remove a melody string and play with 3 strings set at equal distance. Is this to make it easier to pick? I've got an uneasy feeling that the deeper I get into playing the dulcimer, the more dulcimers I'm going to aquire.
Kevin Anderson Actually, I did acquire this dulcimer locally in Pensacola. Yes, I can vouch for the fact that playing with 3 strings accommodates fingerpicking and flatpicking more easily. It's true, the more time one spends with dulcimers, the more one appreciates the unique beauty of different models, their tone quality and appearance... Yes, you have adventures ahead of you yet! :-)

You’re most welcome, Michael! Please let me know if you have any questions as you work though the material.
Neal Gaston, rest his soul, taught that tuning, except it was DGD capo 1. His book of tabs entitled Rose of Mooncoin may still be available.
Hypnotic yes, so beautiful.
Jimmy Jimereeno Thank you, Jimmy, and thank you for listening! :-) This is of those songs that is very addictive to play!

Thank you, Mark! You are very kind. :-) I appreciate your listening.
That tuning is awesome!!!
Thank you, Stephen! I find that D-G-D (or one of its sister tunings) and a capo on the first fret works very well for several Scottish songs... :-)

Does anyone know names of bands who play Celtic trad with a mountain dulcimer?
Trios, quartets, duos, whatever.
Sounds great.

I was just curious how your last name is pronounced

Is the dulcimer you're playing all walnut? It has a beautiful tone to it.
Thank you, Kevin! Yes, it is an all-walnut McSpadden. :-) Walnut wood's mellow tone seemed most appropriate for this song.

title means..`making Play/game¬?
Yes, that’s about right... I believe it is short for “Dheanainn sùgradh ris a nighean duibh.”
