All of this decision-making begins to make sense when you consider that Don Mattrick became a millionaire at 17 and basically did not learn how to fail until he was in charge of a console launch. It was totally unchecked hubris, on center stage.

Really funny coming back to this nearly a decade later and having watched Phil Spencer make a mess of things.

To me it seemed like hubris.
Sony during the launch of Ps3 was like "Well everyone has a ps2 so OBVIOUSLY everyone will buy a ps3 regardless what we price it and how few gameswe got."
Didn't work out so well and Microsoft swept in with the Xbox 360 and now everyone had that instead.
Then during the start of THIS generation they did the exact same thing. "Well everyone has a Xbox 360 so OBVIOUSLY they will buy the XboxONE no matter what we do."
    And swoosh comes the Ps4.

Nobody cared about Blue-Ray at the time though.

My best friend jumped ship this generation and if I'm 100% honest, if Microsoft bungles Gears of War 4, I'm done. Moving my console into the back room and not worrying about it until Rock Band night shows up. I have never been fully invested in Halo, Forza is a bore (to me), and so many of the new IPs leave me with question marks. Sunset Overdrive, though fine, left me scratching my head. Crackdown, forget it, and all the third party games I want ARE better on PS4. The decision is very real.

In the gameplay sense, no. As far as progression, it's a pretty empty game, sadly. I am enjoying it, but it is definitely an uneven affair. Now if you get it for like $30, that's not a bad deal, but I wouldn't pay $40.

@@ndnomar5640 PC Splitscreen 2x 1080p60FPS, still runs good on the One S. It was my first Gears because Mouse + Keyboard Support in Splitscreen coop and I'm looking forward to 5. Play Anywhere was the key feature for me. Read that Horde Mode was also Splitscreen in Gears 3, I hope that becomes an option again.

I really wish I understood Microsoft's approach to this generation, because it genuinely feels like they've given up. Next gen is around the corner I guess, so we'll see what each brand has to offer then. This generation was just a mess though.

    • @thegameneededme5
      @thegameneededme5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@FhtagnCthulhu Yeah, I feel like at a certain point, they took a look at the games lineup they had in the pipe and decided it was best to just make some investments and start building for the future. Since it takes a few years to make a big game, _hopefully_ that means they'll be ready to bring it once the next gen gets going.

This has been such a weird generation for Microsoft. Didn't exactly come out the gate strong, obviously, and since then, they've made so many decisions that I just don't understand. On the plus side, I think Game Pass is a cool idea that seems like it could be where the industry is going in the immediate future, before streaming games becomes viable (if ever). Backwards compatibility being added was a cool surprise, considering companies seemed over the idea at the start of this gen.
But then they make decisions like having their first-party exclusives on PC as well, which didn't work out well initially and definitely doesn't help sell Xbox Ones, and yet they immediately are like YO HERE'S TWO NEW XBOXs! They announced two new Xboxs at the same damn E3, ffs. And it's easy to forget, now that microtransactions have become normalized, that MS was really one of the leading forces in bringing that shit to AAA games this generation from the get-go. Post-Dead Space 3, sure, but they established that as a new paradigm moving forward from day one. All this in addition to their big first-party exclusives being at best decent and at worst, Sea of Thieves. They just haven't made a case for why anyone _needed_ an Xbox One. The X is a more powerful machine than the PS4 Pro and comes with a 4K blu-ray player, but it lacks the games that Sony has.
And with all the DRM/used game/always online policies, the messaging was all wrong. They always framed it in a way of 'here's what you can't do anymore', rather than 'you get to do all this'. Sony's announcement that you'd need PS+ for multiplayer was framed as 'look at all this cool shit PS+ gives you! Free games! Discounts! Multiplayer! More free games!' That's how it needed to be done for MS, as well. Even when they walked back on those policies, they framed it in a way that seemed like a negative. 'Can't give you family sharing or let you play disc-based games without the disc in the tray anymore.' Not trying to come across as a fanboy, I genuinely hope MS and Sony both do well (while Nintendo continues to do its own thing), I'm just coming from a place of confusion and disappointment. Also, this discussion is years old so who gives a shit. I'm sorry I wrote a novel of a comment and wasted your time.

If everything goes all digital I'm done with video games.
The amount of times I've had digital copies of games that needed to be re downloaded, dlc issues and whatever else I've had happen is just too much. Physicals are there and their not going away as long as you don't treat them poorly.
In some cases the game is only digital and it eventually gets removed from the store! (I.E. Jojo's bizarre adventure HD, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World the game ect.)
So I have to cling to the downloaded copy and hope it lasts.

+Pet Shop But now they're putting just-barely-functional versions of games on the disc, and making you download the day-one patch to apply all the last-minute optimizations they made between going gold and release day.

With the popularity of the Elite controller it just shows how much we xbox fans wanted a hard core gaming experience. Not the weak rubbish Don Mattrick gave us. This man ruined this and maybe the next xbox generation. It's so sad how Microsoft got it so wrong. Kinnect, t.v, & a poor choice of hardware just let Sony breeze to the top without doing any hard work. With the Nintendo NX just around the corner xbox just better watch out. If NX get it right, 1080p @ 60 fps or higher & with good third party games l might just jump ship. I want cloud computing, DX12 games TODAY, better optimised games & a promise of the most powerful games console ever next time.
