    This is an amazing document of how badly Microsoft screwed themselves on the Xbone launch. It took a room full of games journalist professionals to parse their FAQ, and even they had questions that had very uncomfortable answers or no official answer at all. Stunning.

    With the news of Vinny, Brad, and Alex leaving Giant Bomb and the GB fan base celebrating the site, I thought I would go to the first GB video I watched that got me into the site. Almost 8 years ago, I was looking on TH-cam for info about the Xbox One launch disaster. I found this video of these chuckleheads being insightful, chill, and funny. Fast forward to now, and I've been a premium subscriber for years. I know that whatever Vinny, Brad, and Alex do next, they will be killer at it. And I know that whatever form Giant Bomb takes in the next few weeks/months will also be killer. Godspeed Duders. Giant Bomb Forever. And Rest in Peace Ryan Davis.

    This video is incredible to come back to with the benefit of hindsight. It’s clear Microsoft didn’t have set policies on any of these things, or else they would have found a better way to communicate them. I’d love to know what their line in the sand was with pre-order numbers after E3 that caused them to reverse these policies. As in, how much ground were they willing to lose before making the decision to backpedal. It had to be somewhere around 3:1 or worse. Imagine where the Xbox brand would be right now had they stuck to their guns. Might not even be looking at a new Xbox in 2020...

    ha, a beautiful end to the video, shows how crazy these things sound when applied to non-gaming products.
    As Patrick said, would be better to block pre-owned for 1-3 months after a release, then have no restrictions. Ultimately though, the problem is they are stuck in the middle of disc-based vs digital system, hard to set rules that make sense.

  • @Randomstupidchannel
    @Randomstupidchannel 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Patrick had a great point, you can't even make it a weekend without the internet connection. My family has a cabin with electricity, but no internet, and my phone doesn't have a connection out there. Looks like I'm not bringing my Xbone to the cabin for a weekend.

    Yeah, but it all depends. DRM doesn't mean "it has to be online" It can also mean that you cannot install the game then install it on every console in the world and use it at once. DRM is just a term to describe something to limit used games. There is DRM right now, you need to have your disc in your console for the game to work, and you cannot play it with no disc, that is DRM. Sony have a patent that allows you to install the game from the disc and on other consoles, but the disc is a "key".

    There's a little game store called Game City in my town that sells all kinds of games, new and old, along with game merch. It's a really cool place, and I buy stuff from them all the time. The little shops are out there.

  • @LiamDilley

    They have said its not always on. The always on comes from power being in a standbye state so you can wake it with your voice etc.
    There will be a period check online that it will need which at the moment is a hazy once a day but that may change.

    Thanks for breaking down all this insanity and turning it into English for us, Giant Bomb. Pretty sure I'm skipping all three consoles and sticking with PC until the Wii U gets quality games. The PS4 and Xbox One do not particularly interest me, but I know Nintendo and third parties will deliver eventually...although the indies on PS4 look tempting as well (although probably not exclusive for most).

  • @ZaWarubro
    @ZaWarubro 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ItsDedubs: Indie games are actually quite fun and last quite a while depending on the game. Braid was great and had beautiful story and message, same with Bastion. Don't starve gives the player a sense of survival where you thought you knew what you were doing, until winter comes. I suppose to you "blockbuster" games like CoD or the 2k series. These "Triple-A" titles provide the same experience every year with little to ABSOLUTELY no change at all.

  • @darkmaggot

    I am mainly a PC gamer so I am used to Steam and not being able to buy or sell used games but I always thought that aspect was one of the biggest selling points of consoles.

  • @SwobyJ
    @SwobyJ 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree. There is no possible title that would prompt me to get a new console for the next 2-3 years, at least given that I game on the PC too.
    Even games like a 'Mass Effect 4', I can get on PC, and games like Final Fantasy Versus, I can just wait 1-2 years and it'll drop significantly in price, most likely. etc

    I said the pricing would have to fall in line in another comment, but all evidence points in the direction that they would.
    Even everyone's favorite developer to hate, EA, learned that the hard way with Origin. They said they would never do deep discounts on their store. Their IP was too valuable.
    The Origin deep discount sale happens every two or three months now. If even one publisher starts to discount on Xbox Live, it will start the prices to falling.
    Expect it to happen rather quickly

  • @JDowdy1979
    @JDowdy1979 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There will be exclusives. I didn't say I was going to buy it either, I just said the policies do not bother me because I am used to them already with my Steam Library and having multiple computers in the house.
    I do like playing multiplayer FPS games and I cannot play with KB&M so a console is really the only way to go. However, I can wait until one comes out that I "must have".
    I will admit prices would have to drop significantly for this policy to make any sense though.

    I'd let that fall into the category of, "I don't need it, but it would be nice to have." I don't mod my games very often, not since Half-Life 1, really. However, it is nice to know that if I hit hard times, there's a community of people who will make free DLC for me. If I want to go back and play Baldur's Gate after all these years, I can. I know none of those things are true for my 360, in fact, I'm currently planning to buy more 360s just so I can keep playing my games after X1.

    It's probably not as complicated as it sounds.1. Can share games with friends from shared library but only one other person can play your game at one time ( as if you had actually given them the physical copy). 2. Trade in your game at regesterd retailers ( retailers can reactivate for resale through Microsoft system for all titles and not have to go through 3rd party publishers to do so) makes life easy for publishers and retail outlets although would be a cost to the retailer who pay you fuck

  • @emmanueldavid2067

    also if your internet is down, and you have a pretty good phone plan, you could just switch on the hotspot, let the xbox connect to the phone hotspot, then after it checks everything is okay (no dodgy stuff) you can play for another 24h
    easy as that my friend

    The only reason MS isn't doing sales yet is because bricks and mortar stores still exist that demand equality. Go see how many PC games are still being sold at retail; It's difficult to find boxed versions anymore.
    The only thing I'll say is that once there are no more bricks and mortar stores, the prices had better drop to accommodate the lack of manufacturing and distribution costs. I don't expect games to drop to 20 bucks, but an industry shift should happen to compensate.

    If you check that supposed NSA program, PRISM, youll find that Microsoft is already listed on the groups the NSA have requested info from. Meaning if the reports are true, AND the Kinect having to be connected for Xbox One to work, then the NSA can listen into anyones conversation if they have an Xbox One.

    This is quickly becoming a Microsoft Fanboy go-to. Here's why it isn't like Steam: You can go offline and play your games with Steam. You can mod your games with Steam. You can use community patches to fix Steam games. You have backwards compatibility with Steam. You can host your own online servers with Steam games. With Xbox One you can buy the license for a game, play that game, and put it on your shelf. It's not the same.

  • @maxcypond

    This has more meaning than games. All media is going digital...all of it.. in a few years these rules will apply to everything novels, music, films, and more. You won't be able to own anything...not books...not music..not movies...so you can't loan anything. And what happens when you miss a payment - it all gone. What happens when you lose your job or can't afford internet?
    Well, you won't go to a library because they can't loan anything either. This is a nightmare that we cannot agree to.

  • @JDowdy1979
    @JDowdy1979 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    These policies personally do not bother me. I play games WITH friends, I don't loan games to them. Also, unless every form of internet in my area goes away (cable, 3G, 4G, etc) I'm sure I can pull off authentication.
    This is basically "Steam for Console", and I've been living with Steam for a while anyway. I'm not going to get on my soapbox about it, but people need to get used to having to pay to be entertained. All digital entertainment is headed in this direction.

  • @afterlifeproducer
    @afterlifeproducer 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is also true, but there are various markets out there that offer me Bioshock or Borderlands for about $1. Even the various sales from Steam or Amazon will always be better than what Microsoft will offer me in regarding prices. Games on Demand on the Xbox store are still priced at $19.99-$29.99. We are talking about 2005-2006 games here when they are basically worthless.

  • @Zedisdead9
    @Zedisdead9 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I know what you mean... Certain PC games are trying the internet required to play method but are being criticize for doing it. PCs are much more open than consoles, I doubt that they could impose this on every PC games. There is a way to extend Steam's offline mode beyond 2 weeks btw...

  • @TheBrokenCage
    @TheBrokenCage 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Because Microsoft isn't claiming that the online requirement is related to DRM that they can simply shut off later. They're claiming that it is required so it can take advantage of the "infinite power of the cloud." It's just like EA saying SimCity can't run offline because they needed the cloud to run simulations (they've since changed their story, you still can't legally play SimCity offline.)

  • @emmanueldavid2067

    There's no question that this is really bad. Unfortunately, we are a very small percentage and I'm sure the thing will still do amazingly in sales. Game companies have moved away from marketing to gamers (this also means that they're hurting us in terms of features), they already have us locked in.
    I just hope that it sells very few games and they don't make as much money as they're hoping to.

    The $64,000 Question: What happens when both the Xbone and PS4 restrict the sale and use of used/rented/borrowed video games? What are the "hardcore" fanboys going to do? Quit playing video games? Keep their older, "obsolete" systems, which will have the same games as Xbone/PS4? Make nice with Nintendo? The horror! Very fascinating to see how this saga plays out - what are you willing to sacrifice, your privacy & consumer rights, or your toys? Much thanks for the video, everyone!

    I never said DRM system, I said digital system referring to a PC gamer, having a digital, not physical game, game and not being able to sell it to a friend, trade it in for cash etc. Two similar but different terms. But to your point games on Steam do have DRM, even if not all. And while it clearly is not as strict as this, it's still serving the same purpose. And I only "changed the boundaries of the discussion"when you brought in benefits and all this other nonsense about modding and such.

  • @rldubya82

    Don't misunderstand me. I agree that if PS4 does the same thing you either accept it or don't support either console. But just because some of the big Publishers try and strong arm Sony doesn't necessarily mean that there will be no games on PS4. Truthfully though I think if that was really going to work then Sony would have had to been ready for it already and had a lineup of first and third party exclusives to fall back on. It wouldn't take long for the big 3 realize they screwed the pooch.

    1. No, but $60 is a big investment for a product sight unseen.
    2. Actually, you can play Wii games on the Wii U. The Wii could play Gamecube games. The PS3, until much later, could play PS1 or PS2 games. IIRC the slim PS3 models are still backwards compatible with PS1 games.
    3. Well, it also harms my ability to buy cheaper used games after retail. Or ever.
    Heaven forbid I not want to buy an incredibly limited system that does nothing but inconvenience me. You're wrong, kid. Beat it.

    Better now but still not great. Some digital games cant be played offline. Xbox one's Games with gold is just silly. You can get free games to add to your colllection. On the 360 you can play any of them offline, a silver account, and even on other accounts (as long game owner license is on that console). But not on the Xbox one, you have to have a gold account to play any of the downloaded ones. So that of course means always online. Someone claim (Cant Confirm It) that a game he Bought digitally became a GWG and so after that he couldnt play it as a silver account. I have never owned a playstation console (N64 over PS1, original xbox over PS2, Xbox 360 over PS3) But the PS4 does sure look tempting. I just need to do research to not get anything hidden like on GWG program

    Once the actual creators of the games at least threaten to not support such devices as Xbox One, then the gamers will start to care because that means no more of their favourite characters and worlds. What could the publishers do? They can't make games. They'd be screwed. You, the gamers have the power to decide. And, to the developers, stand up for yourselves! Collectively!

    "Shuhei Yoshida, told reporters that any requirement for users to register a game online in order to play it would be left to game publishers. Sony won't require that."
    There you go.

    I really don't believe they are going to allow 2 people to play the same game at the same time with that family plan.

    You know what would be just great? If Microsoft just released a functional system without all this DRM-crap in the way.
    Oh, and with backwards compatibility and the ability to transfer data forward.
