Mass Airflow Sensor Diagnostics

A mass airflow sensors use a hot wire or film to detect changes in airflow to the engine. As the sensor is exposed to the outside air, the resistance will change, along with the sensor's signal voltage. But what happens when the sensor is contaminated with dirt and oil?
