    Thanx for posting these tuts. I've tried before to get the hang of Mandelbulb 3D but it was confusing as heck to read tutorials. I think seeing vids like these will help me more than the written tuts! I will keep watching, and I'm off to re-install the latest version of MB3D so I can give it another go!

    thank you thank you thank you! longtime mandelbubler user, just got M3D to work with wine. thanks for the tutorials; the interface is wide asunder but just as intuitive as mandelbulber, but these videos are a great kickstart.

  • @DonWhitaker
    @DonWhitaker  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, you can start and stop the render. It steps through each frame of the animation, saving images as each one is complete. Time for each animation is different depending on the fractal formula, and especially the size of each image. If I'd rendered this one at 1280x720 instead of 1902x1080 it would've taken about half as long. After you get all the frames you string them all together with a video editor to create the video.

    Thank you for making sense of the layout and basic functionality. For me, at first glance, the start creen reminded me of the fun you could have with early Metacreations UIs, where menus would suddenly lurch out of the darkness as you accidentally tracked over them, but now it makes good logical sense. Probably the most useful five minutes I've ever spent on youtube. \o/

    No raytracing in the Mandelbulb 3D app, at least not in the normal sense. Jesse has added Reflections since i did these tutorials. There is an app called Fragmentarium that uses raytracing for mandelbulbs and other algorithmic shapes.

I'm such a newbie! Can't wait to see if I can utilize this program with some of my existing art -- or is it only the fractals that the program offers?

  • @DonWhitaker

    The slower your CPU the more patience is required. :) M3D doesn't use the graphics card for any calculations, it does everything on the CPU. It's multi-core friendly so more CPU cores is awesome. I run on a 6 core Althon Phenom clocked at 3.2ghz, but I've also used an el-cheapo dual-core laptop at 1.2 Ghz for rendering. Gigabytes of RAM is beneficial for extreme high resolution renders, but I don't think it is a major factor otherwise.

  • @DonWhitaker
    @DonWhitaker  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, sort of. It'll work on just about an PC, but the slower your computer the more patience you'll need. :) I have been rendering most of my animations on a cheap, dual-core laptop. I set everything up on my main PC then let my little laptop churn through it all. My last animation took about 8 weeks to render.

  • @DonWhitaker
    @DonWhitaker  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    THere are some presets in the Mandelbulb 3D program folder. The folder is called M3Parameters. Opened with the button labeled Open Parameter. they are the .m3p extension. You can also download presets from fractalforums or Deviant art. I'll put a link in the description to a forum thread with a bunch of params.

  • @CarlTremura
    @CarlTremura 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    this may seem like a stupid question, but i cant for the life of me see how I can make the actual geometry change each step of the animation. I can make the image and render it fine, I just dont know what values to tweak at each step to make it slowly "morph". I assume that theres some way to make it step incrementally automatically, or do I have to make a keyframe, then tweak a param, then move the cam, recalculate the image and rinse and repeat?Much thanks!

    are there any apps out there that let you explore these similar to a video game? I want to explore these while wearing the oculus rift. Even if it was stuck on "a track" through one of these that let you look around in the oculus would also be amazing (and possible to render ahead of time. Thanks for the info, i'm new to these but they are amazing.

    Excellent Honey Bunch, you're welcome. I usually prefer video tutorials too. It's usually just easier to figure stuff out when you can see someone doing it. Check out the new one I posted today, too. It's a little different - a walkthough style that shows how I make a simple animation.,

  • @DaveG1
    @DaveG1 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank-you ! well worth your time. I cant wait to get this on my system and explore. I really like your Totems vid, but thats not a computer generated fractal, right ? I think totems is proof that natural fractals exist and they are so enlightninig to watch in the right frame of mind.

  • @DonWhitaker
    @DonWhitaker  12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've seen a few realtime mandelbulb experiments, but nothing quite as impressive as just roaming around in M3D. Having an Oculus Rift in there would be amazing. o.O I guess it's not out of the question, but i think it would recquire some extreme trickery and black-belt code-fu. :) Making a 360 degree interactive video should be possible with M3D. There is a panoramic camera option that renders a spherical view..

    • @DonWhitaker
      @DonWhitaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Benjamin. Do you have the Antialiasing set to 3 on the Animation window? That would triple the size of your render. That setting is right next to Animation Size in the Animation window.

    • @BenjaminvonCramon
      @BenjaminvonCramon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DonWhitaker Yup, finally saw how that related, thanks. I also now get how you have to set Viewing at 1:3 if your antialiasing is 3 to a) save that result, b) save at all (was getting out of memory error), and c) chop rendering time in half. Many thanks.

    anyone have any idea why after i click "re-render all keyframe preview images" it just loads for a long time, i rendered a scene before and had no problems with it loading, but that had a low far plane, but i didn't increase it too much so i don't see why it's now loading like this.. i did however upgrade to windows 10 after i rendered the previous scene, maybe win10 is the reason?

    • @schizo604
      @schizo604 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, this function calculates new preview images for animation maker
      after you changed parameters via "Processings". Recalculation takes a
      while. Check the explanation at 42min 6sec of my animation tutorial available at my channel. So I don't think it is a Windows 10 problem (I also use windows 10).

    Hey, thanks for the tutorials! They're turning out to be very expensive for me as I need to buy a new computer to get decent render times, ha. Do you know if this software runs on Windows 8.1? Any video card / processor advice? Thanks!

    • @DonWhitaker
      @DonWhitaker  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi PIxelWrangler. It runs on WIndows 8.1 just fine for me, don't think I've ever heard of any problems in that area. Video Card won't matter at all for Mandelbulb 3D, it's all about the CPU. It'll max out as many CPU cores as you give it. I have a i7-3770 with 8 cores @ 3.4 Ghz and I've been very happy with that. It can still take hundreds of hours to render long, hi-rez videos but it's much better than the dual-core CPU I had previously.
      If you are going to run it maxed out for long periods of time make sure you have a good fan/cooling system. There are very few apps that will work your CPU as hard as M3D. There is an option in the app to only use X number of cores for rendering, which is nice. I sometimes let it run in the background with just a few cores while I work on other taskas

    Don, is this (or is there) a program where you can draw your own idea (Example: I want to draw an Elk) and the program creates a fractal based around the user's idea? I would like to create some complex temple style fractals based off of a temple idea of mine.

    • @DonWhitaker
      @DonWhitaker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, more like you are exploring shapes and picking ones that you like. Closest thing I can think of to your request is Fractalius plugin for Photoshop. Not 'true' fractals but it makes some interesting images. www.redfieldplugins.com/filterFractalius.htm
      You might also explore one of the 'Style Transfer' methods. Start with your temple images then have it re-drawn in the style of a fractal image. DeepArt.io is a good one.

      Thank you for getting back to me so quickely. I'll look into these. Though this seems to only be covering 2d fractals. I was hoping for a program that took a 3d model and converts it to a 3d fractal...though looking back at my post I did word it completely wrong.

    So would I be able to go into the fractal and find a scene I like, save it as a png, then bring it into Photoshop and add other things into it, or is there a option to make the background transparent?

    • @DonWhitaker
      @DonWhitaker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No option for a transparent background that I know of. You can mke the background a very bright, solid color - like a green screen video effect. You can also save the ZBUF image data. That is a greyscale image that represents the depth of every pixel. You can use that in photoshop to make a clean selection of the background.

      Yes, Mandelbulb 3D can also produce 3D models. I have tutorials on this playlist that show how. th-cam.com/video/Kpu-DZs9HXU/w-d-xo.html
      Older versions required the use of a couple of external apps, but a newer version now outputs .obj files directly. th-cam.com/video/E7YrvSZdKLs/w-d-xo.html
