A better design it to have a separate section on the collector or lower disk that is a short between the 2 ends of the coil but not connected to the electrical part. This way the coil shunts itself but does not short circuit the actual electrical circuit. It just has to have a 3rd connection that shorts the coil ends together before it switches phases.
