      as much as i'd love that to be true the timeline of when the song was released doesn't match up with her age. she would have been 11 the year op purchased the tape, so she almost certainly wasn't even in double digits when the song was actually recorded. i've heard of idols starting young but not THAT young. plus the singer's voice sounds way too mature to be a little kid. (but for the record "fairly unremarkable local government official with a secret idol past" sounds like a great premise for a comedy anime and now im sad that doesn't exist)

    Heads up: MIDI is a universal way for digital synthesizers to talk between each other, not strictly how the synths produce their sounds. It's a bit like saying you're making a cake and the ingredients are the cookbook and the measuring cups, not the eggs and flour.

      Yeah midi is the digitized notation of musical properties like the note value, velocity, etc coded in 8 bits. There is actually no sound behind it; you need to add a digital instruments to play what is essentially sheet music and conductor.

    I have a theory about ARA (Audio Representatives Association):
    What if ARA was a small underground recording studio that existed during the 70s and 80s for people to record demos of their songs? Or was the only company to produce high quality songs for small to big projects like anime or videogames or commercial jingles? Well, this might be the case.
    Because, I recall back in my college days during the time I go to a small underground recording studio (not in Japan but similar), the recording studio would provide equipment including music instruments, recording equipment, and a soundproof room for a small price. And yes, they can provide the tapes for free (or CDs) with the studio's name on it. So what I think is that ARA could be just a small recording studio that most companies would go to just to do demo recordings of their music. And they may have sold goods as well such as blank compact cassette tapes under their own brand (either ARA or ARA LTD).
    ARA may have closed down during the economy bubble burst (around 1989 or early 1990), which led to an outcome of some indie bands disbanding or people not getting interested to become a pop singer at that very point. Or worse, not wanting to take commissions. We can safely say the closure of this mysterious recording company may be part of the downfall of the economy bubble burst. And whichever artist or major company has hired them to do demo recordings, may have cancelled and so, liquidating all of the assets they have, valuable or invaluable. Most of the valuable assets are sold while the invaluable ones were sent to second-hand shops. Which may correlate to the tapes that tekibaka bought at that time (because 50JPY is cheap in 1990). Who knows how many demo tapes were there but we can see that there may be more than just two demo tapes that have contain demo songs made by idols from its hayday or commissions by companies, making some of their employees who are talented with singing (and may not want to be an idol), to sing jingles written by ARA.
    Today, if people try to search for ARA under Audio Representatives Association or ARA LTD, it will either give different search options or may give different companies under the same name but not the same target.
    I can bet that people would say "this kind of small niche company would not close down if big companies would ask them for commissioned work". Yes, I know that. But this is only a theory. A total speculation. And also by then, most of those major companies already have their own studio. So it would be like a "why would a major company rent out a small underground studio for?"
    But yeah, it would be very interesting if it were the case.

    • @smgt4108
      @smgt4108 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That very interesting theory

    • @mdfyui8000
      @mdfyui8000 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't think ARA would have been really 'underground' or small - I think it would have been a contract studio of a decent size. They obviously were big enough to stock, use and distribute cassettes with their own named labels on them (including variants of the print, so they probably had gone through a number of batches over time) - evidently they wanted to be known and they had the cash to brand everywhere. Of course though it was bubble era Japan and many businesses would have been flush with cash to spend on the niceties so maybe this was just an easy done thing.
      I think there's no real qualms as to why a major studio might use a contract house for - major studios do a lot of subcontracting, sometimes credited and other times not. If you check the recording information on a small artist released signed to a big label it's not surprising to bunch of other company names pop up in the credits list. As for closing down, it's easy to mismanage so no surprises, there could have been a plethora of reasons why they might shut their doors but the bubble burst is definitely a very likely catalyst of the era.
      A spanner that would be thrown in the works is whether or not the blackout happened at liquidation or maybe this batch of cassettes has actually passed through an intermediary who might have been related to ARA at some stage but acquired and re-utilised their consumables post ARA - therefore the content may not be of the ARA period. It seems to me that if you were to blackout the logo for liquidation that you would have blacked out all the content on the labels as well. Perhaps these were blank excess stocks to start with and they were liquidated or disposed of, hence only blackout of the logo.

    The image used on the "Yukifuru Yoru no Love Song" video is from a CD cover for a decently obscure (nowadays anyway, it was a manga that was never translated to other languages) old manga series called Koibito wa Shugorei. I didn't know anyone else even knew that one existed lol. It never had any anime adaptation (as far as I'm aware) but it did have drama/voiced acted CDs/cassette tapes and also music CDs/cassette tapes as merchandise at some point or another in its prime years. • @zaynes5094
    @zaynes5094 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    My theory on this is, despite being very late to this mystery party, that it probably was an unknown female singer who was imitating another popular singer from that time, which is very common even in our day and age, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say it's a singer who was trying out a demo track that she recorded at a recording studio. Since the materials for recording were pretty simple and inexpensive at the time, it could be that she just used that tape which had the other singers song on it.
    Either that, or it was an unknown who wanted to do what Takahashi was doing and wanted the production company to know that style is what she wanted to do, but then if it was turned away by that production company it would make sense why she would trash the tape by throwing it away. Then someone probably saw it and took it out and brought it into a store to trade it in. Not knowing exactly what was on that tape.

    24:36 the vocal and guitar style both REALLY remind me of 山崎ハコ (Yamasaki Hako), who was already part-way through her career when she became associated with Victor Entertainment in the early 90s. This is important because her timbre was more rough and aged by then.😮

    Tantei Knight Scoop is a great show and I would actually bet that they would be able to get us closer if not solve the mystery. They take viewer submissions and that's been their format. If someone can find archives online of this show I would highly suggest to watch some episodes to get an idea of the kind of stuff they go through to satisfy viewer requests. The two big ones that come to mind are "I want to cook on a Mama Renji" and "I want to eat a shoe!"
    Mama Renji was a toy similar to easy-bake ovens in the US where you would cook on a little stove top with a small pan. The problem is the toy was discontinued and the company was defunct. Plus both feature Chef Hayashi who I think is a reoccurring figure on the show since his initial introduction.

    The research about ARA company limited won't be easy. A quick one in English returned me the various business profiles of non-durable goods companies based in Japan. Even done in the native language, there is no guarantee to find any solid info about a company with probably little relevancy in the music landscape. Unless you manage to find the name of a sound engineer and contact him/her. I think ARA wasn't completely defunct at the time the tapes were circulating and didn't want their name associated with unsanctioned music, so they censored the logo. Maybe ARA is a red herring: a group not affiliated to them acquired some of their tapes and the unknown idol recorded her demo over whatever existed before. To make it clear it's not officially from ARA, the logo was sharpied.

    • @sps4992
      @sps4992 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thank you for this deep consideration towards who or what ARA may have been. This has indeed been a common discussion among us over on the Discord. Regarding ARA specifically, we have many questions, but no clear answers at this stage. It makes sense that they would be an agent or middle-man operation in some capacity. Some kind of go-between for seemingly smaller artists and larger projects. Maybe they were a recording/editing house? A duplication service for cassette production? An advertising agency? Who knows? Extensive searches have been conducted online, but so far, outside of the three known ARA labeled cassettes themselves, we have not been able to find a single bit of evidence to substantiate the existence of this company.

    I like the idea that it could be a CM song. I mean they were common and also most of them were not preserved and published as singles or in albums. Sometimes I see listings on Yahoo Auctions of CM songs compilation CDs but it's pretty unlikely to find one of the Akiba tapes songs in one of them.

    • @sps4992
      @sps4992 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Whilst I'm open to this concept, I don't fully understand why a company who specializes in CM work would also be handling potential demo material from presumably unknown artists? If Fly Away and Wagamama were obvious CM jingle songs, I could understand them being potential jingle demos. Considering the content of Fly Away in particular, I struggle to imagine that song being used in a commercial sense. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @cchrispop
      @cchrispop ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think Fly Away could suit into a commercial, since it feels very "themed," the pitch and the lyrics are a little eerie, and could possibly fit in something marketed towards giving that same feeling, same with Wagamama.
      Also, it would kind of make sense that ARA would be a commercial or advertising company with a very brief lifespan; during that time, the company popped in and out pretty quickly because of the bubble.
      This reminds me of a song made for the Jack Daniel's CM, which was later traced back to be sung by Clara Shinzato from the group "EVE." She was not originally credited, and the CM shows a clearly cut version, so probably there was a full-length demo version once.

    • @sps4992
      @sps4992 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @cchrispop That's very interesting to learn. Thank you.
      I could definitely see Wagamama being used for a wholesome vibe. Fly Away would seem like a very unusual choice for an advertisement though. I personally interpret the lyrics as possibly meaning anything from a story about a break-up, or perhaps even about death. I can't imagine this being a very appealing theme for the purposes of advertising?

    • @cchrispop
      @cchrispop ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sps4992 That's true; most of the ads from that time that I saw were more bubbly, and the presence of Fly Away on a cassette with other affirmed artists doesn't really support the CM route.
      But I cannot think about other cassettes that were bought with it or the "Ajinomoto gift," which I think was some sort of promotional vinyl, cassette, or CD gifted with a certain amount of product purchases.
      Also, the fact that another cassette has been found with "Fly Away" on it makes me think that the song was "recordable" in some way from a certain source; I mean, it could be possible that both cassettes were demo tapes, but that seems odd too; maybe if it were a recording of an actual anime single, the lineup on the cassette would make a little more sense, but that doesn't really explain ARA as a company.
      I mean, it doesn't seem like a record company or a company directly related to the music industry.
      It seems more like a subsidiary of a major label dedicated to advertising and promotion.

    • @sps4992
      @sps4992 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @cchrispop I see that you're now beginning to understand my confusion. Haha.
      Each cassette by themselves can be explained under their own scenario, but when putting all ARA labelled cassettes together, it certainly complicates things.
      If every song was polished and ready to go, I could understand them being material for advertising. Given that we seemingly have two possible demo songs from theoretically unknown artists, it begs the question of what they're doing amongst the more well known material? The OP noted that Fly Away was found on a cassette that also featured a song by Yumiko Takahashi, as well as "other known artists". If it was just a mere mix-tape, then what is an entirely unknown song doing on that tape? If it is a demo song sent in for label attention, then why is it bookended by seemingly unrelated pop songs?
      I'm often asking many questions, most of which are doubtful of the topic. This isn't being negative though. It's actually my own way of understanding and breaking down possible options. A process of elimination. I actually really enjoy engagement like this now, as it encourages deeper thinking, hopefully leading us closer to the correct answer.

    • @sps4992
      @sps4992 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @roxys4pb751 I accept how this action of having thrown the cassette away could be viewed as suspicious, but from what I've understood by talking with the former cassette owner, he disposed of the cassette long before the song became an internet sensation. I genuinely don't believe that the OP is playing any games or creating a false narrative. He has been very forthcoming with information and has never tried to gain any personal fame or attention via this story.
      It's indeed most unfortunate that we no longer have the original cassette, but we do have the song, for which I am forever grateful.

    Is it possible that the "ARA" company is merely the company that manufactured the actual blank tape itself? Like if you were around in the 80s and you bought a blank tape new, like blank-blank with nothing on it, there was usually a brand name that made the actual cassette. Big brands like Sony and Toshiba used make some, but usually, you'd just get a cheap brand, and I have a very hazy memory that makes me think it's possible that this was one of those cheaper brands you'd buy.

    Wow another super interesting video! The pieces of the puzzle are slowly coming together.
    Next time I go to used shops and Hard Offs I will check the tapes hoping to find some ARA logo around. :D
    Just a small thing: ALI PROJECT singer is Arika and not Akira.
    I never associated her to the akiba tape because I find the two voices too different. Arika especially in the 80s-90s had a lighter timber and used to sing higher. The singing style is also very different, as well as the style of the song itself. Also, at that time ALI PROJECT had only ONE song with a guitar (one in the whole first album) and that song was still way more "experimental" compared to the mistery tape one). The arrangement of "Fly Away" is quite simple to be honest (this doesn't mean that I don't like it. I love it ah ah).
    And speaking of arrangement, Fly Away is definitely not the usual idol song and it sounds more like a song made by a normal female-fronted band.
    By the way, ラブソングは唄えない is such a nice song! First time that I hear about Takahashi Reiko, so thanks for the information! Now I feel the urge to buy the record and use it in one of my DJ sets. XD

I am sure a compilation of the little known underground 80s songs can still fetch for good bucks, sold to newer fans. Of course, there is still the eventuality this song is disowned by the artist herself which might be why it was forgotten.

      @@nozoto These are all questions that the team have been working through. One of the big hopes that we hold out for, something that is normally more of a hindrance than not, is for the artist to actually copyright claim all versions of the song on TH-cam. This was complicated recently when another musician released a cover/sampled version of this song, which did actually see them being automatically assigned such rights by TH-cam for a time being. I do believe that action has since been reversed however.
      The more widespread and publicly known this song becomes, the greater the chance of the rightful owner stepping up to take ownership. It's by no means guaranteed, but it's not impossible.

    There are promising leads on this song.
    ・There is a theory that this song was supposed to be a song by Akina Nakamori.
    This was mentioned in the comments section of one of the videos by someone who heard this song as a demo song by Akina Nakamori. This theory may be correct, as the lyrics of the song are very similar to those of Akina Nakamori's "赤い鳥逃げた" (Red Bird Escaped)
    Update: One thing I forgot to tell you. This theory is convincing enough, since "Wagamama (Even if it's just a dream)" was released in 1984 and "Akai Tori Egashita (The Red Bird Ran Away)" in 1985. It is possible that this is a demo tape by the same company.

      Hello!
      If you believe that this might be the case, I would LOVE to hear the outcome of this.
      If you have any idea of possible shows or movies to look into, the research team would love to help you out with this!
      Thank you

    18:17 Ah yes, Ajinomoto. They even sell some of their products over here, in France. My supermarket next door have some. I even buy their frozen gyoza every once in a while, as they're still cheaper than the freshly made ones. That's if I ever get tired of Italian style ravioli.
