Chevy Duramax Diesel stalling? Most likely cause for intermittent stalling or non-starting problems.

  • Does your Chevy truck start up and then stall out or stop running spontaneously? Here's a probable solution to your Chevy Duramax diesel 2500HD stalling and having to be re-primed. This is usually a known issue with the fuel primer pump and or filter. Normally, it will get progressively worse as the problem persists. It's an easy repair and it's cheap, so its a good starting point if you are trying to figure out an engine stalling or intermittently not starting up while cranking over.

    This guy is spot on. If you own a Duramax then you already know it by far the best of the three. I have an 2002 LB7, and we all know about the faulty injectors, I upgraded mine in 2012, and up till last weekend (Jan. 2024) this truck never ever faulted, but it did start and stall once, I popped the hood and the filter head was wet, it was still the original filter head and never been rebuilt. Like this guy says there many on Amazon and I got a new filter head, it came with a new filter and water separator and heater...everything for about $100. If you do not have a lift pump on you LB7 then get one!!!!! What a huge difference!!! It has a particulate-air fuel separator and a water separator plus feeds the engine pump under pressure. The injectors get pure fuel with no air in it which is a main cause for eroded injector nozzles. Mine is Air dog brand and was worth every penny.

    Good Video. I changed my fuel filter about a month ago even though it wasn’t time to do so. It had about 50% life left in it. But after I did it said zero life left in fuel filter. I checked everything. Couldn’t see a problem. So I put on another one. A different brand this time. And it told me the same thing that I needed to change the fuel filter. But there was no problem so I just continued driving the truck.
    Last week I was idling for a long time and Truck went into reduced engine power and shut off. I waited a couple minutes and I Turned the key back on and it wasn’t in reduced engine power mode anymore. But it wouldn’t start until I got some starter fluid. Then it ran the rest of the day just fine. The next day the same thing it went into reduced engine power but it didn’t die. Had to shut it off for a minute to reset it. but then it won’t restart, I had to prime it like crazy and use starter fluid then it’s up and going and everything‘s fine. Also it’s getting hard to start in the morning you have to prime it. There’s another thing that might make it easy to figure out the problem is. It did it almost every day last week and every day it was over 95°. It won’t do it if it’s cooler. Do you have any ideas what you think I should focus on? Thanks . She you make great videos
    Also I want to get one of those new doorman’s that you have. Do you have the part number. I’m sure I can find it but you never know. Thanks

    Hey man. Thanks for the video. I have a similar issue where I've gotta prime the system to get the truck started. It will randomly go into limp mode. Gas light drops to E. I can clear the codes. Reprime the system and the truck usually runs fine for an hour or so drive. Problem seems to be getting worse. I've checked over my harness. Wiggled and pulled all the injector wires. Checked the obvious spots grounded. And I can't replicate the problem.

    Hello! Thanks for showing the video about duramax not getting prime! I have a 2008 gmc Sierra 3500hd duramax. We've had this problem before and changed the fuel filter and that took care of the problem, for awhile. Now for about 2 weeks we have encountered the same problem with losing prime. So, we changed the fuel filter and the fuel filter prime assembly. Pushed the primer button to pressure it then started and drove around the block running it fast hoping it would get the air out. It still didn't work without priming it and starting. So, my question is what do you think the problem might be? The fuel line from tank to the fuel filter? Thanks!!!

    I've started getting a problem on these cold mornings with my 2007 corolla verso 2.2 Diesel will start the first time without a problem and idle normally. After about one minute or so warning light will show up on the dash than fter another 30 seconds the engine cuts out.
    When the engine dies, I can restart again without a problem and the whole scenario starts over this happen until the engine warms up. once the temperature reaches 60 and the blue light goes off the car works fine the rest of the day.
    I cleaned the EGR, polished the glow plugs and tested them, put a new fuel filter, tried a working SCV from my mate's car, and did a full tank with fuel treatments.
    None of the above-mentioned worked however the car performance is much better.
    I tried to warm up the fuel rail line with a hot cloth soaked in hot water and will top it with hot water every now and then and the car did not cut off but won't drive as normal unless the engine itself is warmed up.
    Once it is warmed up it runs fine. Any idea what else could it be? Thank you

    • @notoriousJPG
      @notoriousJPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that's definitely a completely different engine and scenario. But if it's throwing a warning light. You should get your OBD2 code reader out and see what code it's throwing. It might be the computer shutting the engine down for a specific sensor issue.

    Truck cranks a lot to start, losses primer built the filter head and changed the filter 2 times with 2 different brands and still no luck,replaced the hoses and just installed the whole filter head from extreme diesel and still doing the same thing. When I un screw the diesel cap to fuel up air gets sucked in like a vacuum I bought a new diesel cap for it and dose the same. The truck fills up with only 16 gallons so I'm guessing the tank has collapse, what do u recommend it could be

    • @notoriousJPG
      @notoriousJPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, if your truck only holds 16 gallons there's definitely an issue there. I'd start by looking at the tank or see if somehow a lot of water got in there. The fuel cap issue you mentioned could be related to that or fuel tank ventilation issue, possibly a blockage in the return line back to the tank.

    • @notoriousJPG
      @notoriousJPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the black plug you're talking about is plastic and shaped like the head of a bolt and has a screw slot, then that's the bleeder screw there's a gasket on that that's probably bad. You can also get aftermarket ones made of aluminum. Otherwise if it's the black cover that goes over the wiring that goes to the diesel fuel heater. If it's a leaking from there then it's an internal gasket in the filter head area have to be rebuilt.

      Sounds like several different issues. Probably sending unit in tank for the fuel gauge. The injectors could be a range of issues. Fuel lines, injectors, pump or others. First ... Check to be sure your oil level isn't increasing from diesel getting into the oil, so your engine does not get trashes from contamination. Then you'll have to do some Targeted diagnosis. Good luck.

      Well, that's a really tough one. Could be many issues including fuel filter. But most likely if there's air getting in the system you'd probably have stalling and a no start or hard starting issues also. I think about looking into the injectors and fuel rail pressure. it's possibly gonna need some testing there. It takes a sophisticated scanner to see balance rates etc. A cheaper solution I've used in the past is an app called torque pro you can buy and use it in conjunction with a Bluetooth OBD2 connector. Probably not, would most likely cause a no start situation.

    Has anyone ever installed one of these and had the pump not budge? I can't push the damn thing and now it's raining. Maybe I'm missing something. I hope....

    The truck being worked on is an LB7. you can tell by the filter/primer housing. inlet and outlet connections come out at a different angle than the newer models. newer models wont line up with hose connections. the new filter /housing you have in this vdeo is the wrong one for the LB7 you are working on.

      True, I made it work by switching out the factory molded fuel line with the longer fuel line. It's been working now for quite a while.👍 Thanks for watching and commenting!
