If I had seen you do this in 2023 instead of 2025, I would have been stressed over the lack of a plan... LOL. But...... in the course of 2024 and watching Slow Stitch Monday every week and watching Wonky Wednesday every week, I have fallen in love with the way of working that you are using for this Coverlet of Comfort. It is a magical journey and who knows where we shall land. I love it. Wonkiness on steroids and so much magic every week. I can tune in every Wednesday saying to myself..... yay.... where are we going this week? Love love love working this way. Thank you Kathryn for introducing me to loving the process wherever it takes me. Soooooooo much fun !!!
Love doing this. The ladies in my sewing group are always so bemused by the projects I bring in to work on. At 70 I don't have to explain... just enjoy myself . Thanks, Kathryn.
Hello Kathryn. Good to hear that you are feeling better. That's my first comment I write on you tube. I followed you since last year march and decided now to do a coverlet of comfort. You are a wonderful teacher and a great artist. I love to hear you voice. I don't have a Facebook account and never wanted one. But now.... I think I need one to join your group. In my surrounding (I am not sure if that is the right translation, my English is not perfect) there is nobody who shares my new love of slow stitching. I am really happy that I found you. Greetings from the Saarland (that is the smallest county in Germany near France an Luxembourg) Tina
Hello Tina, your English is perfect. Thank you for your kind words. I think you will enjoy the community in the Facebook group if you decide to join. There are a few of us there who only inhabit that little, safe corner and don't engage with the wider world of Facebook at all. ❤️
"Stitching will cure everything." That feels true to me! I am loving this process, taking it step by step. I realized that I was hesitant to cut into something like my dad's shirt or handkerchiefs. So I am not doing that. But I realized why...it is because I have less than stellar confidence in my own creative choices. I's be afraid of wrecking it up and wasting the precious cloth. So, the theme, for me, in this project is learning to trust my choices and let the cloth talk, so to speak. And, so far, it is going very well. I am noticing that my ideas seem to come to me when I am out walking...so when I am stumped for what is next, I will be taking walks! Thank you, Kathryn. I am glad you are beginning to feel better!
That's a good theme. And who knows, as we get deeper into the year and you have walked a few miles, perhaps your confidence will grow enough to make the first cut. You will know when you are ready ❤️
What a wonderful way of working. I think that that setting boundaries (a frame) for ourselves is part of taking care of ourselves. Perhaps someone else has made the same comment. The Eco Print Scroll is absolutely beautiful. Like others, I'd have had a hard time cutting it apart and also cutting off parts of leaf motifs but you convince me to try. Your explanation of design principals opens up a new way of creating for me. Thank you as always.
Thank you so much for the TED talk recommendation - How Art Transforms Brokenness into Beauty - It is deeply meaningful and the perfect accompaniment to the Coverlet of Comfort.
Hello Kathryn..Stitching intuitively like this and growing a piece is so comforting and exciting!Amongst other things..thanks to you I am finding my ' stitch voice'..growing from a squawking squeak :) to something that feels familiar and yet new . I think I am broadening my relationship with cloth and the way I experience this. Looking forward to growing cloth and me:) thru the year. Glad you are better . And... kathryn...you are a remarkable teacher...you allow...thank you:) so much.
I needed to hear, "Don't panic!" I'm trying to crochet myself a much needed winter scarf, so I haven't begun to think seriously about this year's stitching project. But I'm not going to panic! I'll start when I can and enjoy the videos until then. Katherine, thank you so much for all the inspiration you provide through your videos. ❤
Watching this week, I just love it, I’m considering joining in with my ample supply of Indian block prints. They are so soft and such pretty colours, I made a load of log cabin blocks last year which I could incorporate. I also have several old woollen blankets that are lovely and soft, I see a second project looming. ❤❤❤
Wonderful to hear you're feeling much better Kathryn! I'm enjoying so much watching you working in this lovely project, and learning so much! Thank you for sharing your process. It gives me confidence to be freer and wonkier when I work in my projects. And thank you for showing your progress in the eco-printed meditation scroll. It's such an amazing transformation when the cloth is stitched! Beautiful indeed! Thank you Kathryn!!!❤
In 2024 I purchased many pieces of vintage and antique handmade quilts. I love these treasures. I have sewn some of them together thinking I would create a lovely soft lap quilt. I haven't finished it yet. Your cloths remind me of my treasures. I am now thinking of hand sewing them together and adding slow stitching. Thank you for the idea.
Hello, Kathryn. My life changed quite a lot and I’ve been away from social media, but now that I’m a bit more settled (but not entirely), I started watching some videos. I’ve watched all of your videos. I’m not following your journaling videos, but I’m watching them because I always like to watch you and your ideas and suggestions. In my new life (that started on 4th December), I started stitching a cloth (I didn’t know what you were doing and I hadn’t watched your videos yet), so I was very pleased to see your doing a similar project. I think my cloth will be hanging on a wall, but I still don’t know. They’re not “meaningful” cloths, but they will be once they’re all stitched together 😊 I’m enjoying to see what you’re doing, but I will miss my beloved wonky Wednesdays 😉 I wish you all the best for this new year. For me, last year was very, very difficult too, so, as we say in Portuguese, I wish for you what I wish for myself: may we overcome the obstacles and pain and start a new and happier life. Love, Alexandra 💙🤎♥️🧡🩵💚💛🩷💜
Hello Alexandra how lovely to hear from you. I was driving back from a friend's this afternoon and I suddenly thought of you and wondered how you were going. How lovely that you are stitching your own special cloth. Wishing you peace, happiness and many blessings in the coming year and lots of love ♥️
I loved the stitching on your scroll. This video is wonderful. I’m so excited to see next week’s as I add fabric pieces to my nine patch. I’ve always wondered about edges. Now I understand. You are so knowledgeable about so many wonderful things I am always impressed and curious for more. Thank you so much Kathryn I feel so blessed to have found your channel
I have an old dining table as the centre of my sewing room. I use it for sandwiching my quilts amongst other things. I don’t worry about scratching either.
Only 1 minute in and the beauty of the stitching on the scroll knocked my socks off! You’ve encouraged me to explore eco dyeing again. I’ve had a couple of clangers but it bothers me much less than in the past as the process is so enjoyable x
Thank you. I am glad I inspired you to ecodye and enjoy the process. The clangers can always be overprinted or dyed. Sometimes they become the most beautiful of all ❤️
I had to have a chuckle when you mentioned Mike when tearing the cloth. When that happened all those months ago I was crying with laughter and I was chuckling merrily today. Your comfort cloth is looking very lovely.
Well, that was just fab, Kathryn! I really enjoyed watching that and knowing that others were watching too. I haven't started yet, but ideas are zooming round my head. For me it will be mainly the fancy stitching and using text to add the precious comfort to the cloth I choose. Thank you, and so pleased that you sound much better.
Dear Clothtales, I wish your videos were longer cos I enjoy listening to your calm voice. Thank you for all your ideas on broadening our 1st pieces of our coverlet. I really like what you've done here today and was giving you feedback while you were contemplating... Hope you heard me 😂❤
This was super useful. I was a bit hesitant to jump in last week with no notion of how the elements would go together. Your strategies for leaving the edges free ready for the next stage have alleviated my (altogether unnecessary) fears.
The eco printed cloth looks great. I really enjoyed the way you described the cutting up and reforming process. You seemed to balance careful selection and chopping off a chunk. I felt I learned a lot. Thanks!
Such a lovely project. Thank you! I love the look of yours and am also quite happy with mine so far. I already feel comforted by it, so that's marvelous.
Cloth engineering😂😂love it! I'm going to go with the flow and liberate myself this year and play with the different sizes, shapes and fabrics...I'm embracing this new technique😅 thanks for the inspiration (believe me when I say this won't be easy for me, being a Virgo we strive for straight lines always😅 ) Take care ❤
I hope you continue to feel better and heal thou self. I am right with you in the torn edge preference as I feel it is more organic. I learned the hard way about trimming a project too soon. Lily Yeh's talk on "How art transforms brokenness into beauty" was fabulous!!! I do so appreciate your recommendation on her. I've been through two divorces and several moves in my life, therefore I don't have anything really memorable in the way of fabrics - so when you mentioned "likeness" fabrics it really broke me joy Katheryn. Thanks so much. Your community of creative people is amazing. If I didn't have my creativity...who knows where I'd be in life. I have a charm that says "Art Saves Lives" and it rings true to my mind, body and spirit. I appreciate all the work you put into your videos, Fred Fred and Stella. x's lj
Thank you for the unplanned journey. I feel this is a creative venture for me to let go and just see what happens. Two words for my personal 2025 adventure are enchanting and magical. I'm expecting the unexpected! Blessings from Horseheads, NY USA.
Thank you, I am enjoying this project. I was bummed that I didn’t have old cloth, but realized my first square would have my start of slow stitching. I had done 5 weeks of 2024 and will have that be my center now. Quite appropriate in my mind.
I like the making as you go along, I'm not much of a needlewoman but I like doing collage with a mix of materials (fabric, paper, paint - anything that I might come across). Your video has made me want to have a go at a stitched project. The scroll is looking lovely.
I really enjoy watching you work with such freedom. When I see a possible difficulty, you see an opportunity for something new and creative. I was brought up by a mom who believed in rules so I have taken on that restriction when creating. I have tried to be aware of that when creating and try to relax more in the process. You are a good teacher Kathryn and maybe someday I will try slow stitching projects. 😊
Pertaining to the comment that neither you nor we know where this project is going, I want to say that one of the earliest quilts I made was a mystery quilt, so we only got the instructions a step at a time with no picture of what it would look like in the end. I have to say that about 20 years later it is still my favorite coverlet that I keep on my bed. I am going fearless into this project with you. If all the items are my beloved textiles, how can it go wrong?
Okay, I think I get something I didn't get before. Your backing big cloth is roughly square and meant to be the "January block." There will be a February, March, etc "block" although they may not be square, but will somehow fit together. So, this backing is meant to be filled in on top & stitched during January -- at least that's your plan for your piece. I wasn't clear why the backing cloth was so much bigger than the 9-patch, but not really big enough for a whole year's project. This will work, I'm just figuring it out now.
Mesmerising ❤ really enjoyed watching and hearing your process 😊 after a tedious day of admin stuff broadband, pet insurance etc what a joy to watch you work on this section and all the tips along the way! Tomorrow I can prioritise this next step and fingers crossed 🤞 it looks like I am not falling behind this year! It seems freer somehow or maybe that's just me getting more immersed into the slow- stich focus on the process way of thinking. Whatever it's brilliant Kathryn ❤ big love as always from Scotland and a woof from Oscar ❤
Am so looking forward to doing this once I've finished my other two projects. I learned a good deal today from the way you address edges, thicknesses, etc. Thank-you very much, Kathryn. And the scroll continues to become even more beautiful as you stitch on it. I'm glad you're well on the mend. ❤
Glad you’re on the mend. I’ve been minding granbabies and will be a bit behind. But that’s a good thing as my pieces are different sizes as well so the tips will come in handy. Thank you ❤️
I've started mine too. Used two receiving blankets & stitched together. P!an on using a 4x4 square for each week of the month, seek g together so the front is stitched with the squares & the back is the "back story" -- marrying the weekly stitching (which I loved) & the 2025 coverlet!!!
Your eco scroll is gorgeous, Kathryn. At first I thought, “Has she been stitching day and night since last week?” And then you explained that you’d filmed last week’s Park Home Life in advance. I knew you were prolific but even so, the progress on the scroll would have been insane. 😂 Loving the coverlet.
I am one who went off on a tangent, we had a big snow so I kept busy. I used a 12 inch cloth with batting. I put a vintage nine patch in the middle and slow stitched and added various stuff all around it. I cut a 13 inch cloth to go under it and brought the edges around like you taught me to do for the hexagons, I just love that method. I will still follow along every week and use the ideas. This is perfect timing to start this project because I am sorting and culling my mountains of vintage bits. Thanks. PS I had to leave Facebook due to some issues.
I am embarking on this project and I know I will be learning lots of new things. I have never made any kind of quilt/coverlet in pieces to be joined later. It seems to be what many I follow are doing. I worry about how to sew pieces together BUT I am certain you will explain and hold our hands. Unfortunately I don't have any fabric or anything belonging to any family member. So after thinking about it I chose 3 pieces of baby dresses that my 4 daughters used and now granddaughter used as well. So it will have a personal touch in that way. ❤ the colors are blues, pinks and turquoise. I am not sure i have any pink fabric or even white to continue some of the colors. But I will see what other bits I can add around these and I figure i can add those colors to other panels to keep tying those colors throughout. I think I will sew down the pieces as you have done before I do fancier stitches. I look forward to using this Comfort Cloth. I'll continue working on it til things get hairy when I might have to pack it and take to Spain. You might remember I mentioned we are moving over the pond. I did find out there is a well known store in Madrid downtown center where there is a very well known store that carries all sorts of lace and threads 🧵👏 but no fabric. I will go online in case they have multiple branches but I'll gladly go to Madrid and get a stash. I will finish the coverlet and it will be a very personal piece for me. This is MY year and I've been doing some seminars on healing through art as well, very similar to your journal with circle/words. They have you choose 3 feelings you have and draw them using colors and later do another piece trying to get the best feeling from what you wrote down and color the best feeling taking over the bad feelings and how can a person so that. It is going to be an interesting adventure this year. In some way we all need help in some way and art is a great way to heal. I am thankful for your projects this year, you will help so many in my opinion.
I will indeed guide to through the process, one step at a time. I do remember about your moving, quite an adventure. I am sure you will find resources, maybe flea markets or thrift stores even for cloth. ❤️
I wasn't sure what to do in my journal this week as I am doing the joyrnal pages instead of the comfort cloth. My nine too large to put a border on. Then I decided that I would do a page that played off how you pieced together the uneven pieces, and I like the whip stitching you did toward the end of the video, so will play with that. Thank you for another fun video. 🌷
Now, you've hooked me on this coverlet. Poor old 9 patch is looking right at home and all the more lovely for it. I think I will probably work in a somewhat discordant way, from lack of pleasing fabrics, but it will just be different, not wrong! The fabric engineering greatly appeals to me. Also, do you ever leave flaps of these cloths hanging over the edge to incorporate into the next block, or do you feel that each block requires autonomy within the whole? Your block holds so many happy memories, will you sustain that throughout or are isolated pieces satisfying enough? You are sounding 80 percent better - the end of brain fog phase.
I always think if you throw enough colours and shapes together, they always work in the end. And yes sometimes I leave flaps hanging to incorporate into the next section and blur the lines, though it makes the joining slightly more complicated. Maybe we'll do that a little later in the year, once everyone has joined a section or two and is comfortable with the process. I don't have enough precious cloths for the whole piece so I will add other pieces throughout. But I wanted the centre to be special. ♥️
Thank you for showing . Eager to ask, is the quilt design on the kitchen table small 9x9s within large 9x9s? Not a quilter so language maybe all wrong.
No it's three different types of block put together. I think it's three types. Square in a square, four patch and another block with little triangles. It was many years ago but I think I joined it in strips first. ❤️
rewatching this morning and thought a question... how many orts tins do you have when you work? One for threads and then the one that the 'fuzzy stuff' goes into? (The bits pulled off of the edges and such)
Yes two, the Fuzz goes into a little tin but I do put it in the recycling every so often, because it's all biodegradable, it goes in the bin here that gets composted by the council. I keep especially nice stuff but I don't keep it all ❤️
I’m absolutely loving this project! One question now… Sometimes you attach to the back and sometimes you don’t. Are you only attaching when you want to see the backstory? What determines in your mind which threads are seen or not seen? Thank you so much for guiding me through my first coverlet.
If I had seen you do this in 2023 instead of 2025, I would have been stressed over the lack of a plan... LOL. Am so looking forward to doing this once I've finished my other two projects. I learned a good deal today from the way you address edges, thicknesses, etc. Thank-you very much, Kathryn. And the scroll continues to become even more beautiful as you stitch on it. I'm glad you're well on the mend. ❤
❤❤que lindo😊😊😊tão delicada e gentil 💗 com tecidos 😊😊os pontos 🪡🪡 Deus abençoe 🙏🏼😘🇧🇷🇧🇷
So homely, and brings up images of cozy winter evenings, wrapped in my own comfort coverlet
in front of the fire with a steaming cup of tea. Sigh.....
Glad you’re on the mend. I’ve been minding granbabies and will be a bit behind. But that’s a good thing as my pieces are different sizes as well so the tips will come in handy. Thank you ❤️
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tutorial ❤️
God bless you, dear K3n,
I got up and didn’t see a video. I started rewatching last week’s and suddenly, there you are! So happy to see you.
This year's videos are posted at 3pm GMT 🥰
@@k3n.clothtales thank You. That’s 7:00 am m time.
Wow this is going to be fun. I'll have another useful item from this journey. Kathryn yours is looking Good💚💛💚
J’adore ❤
Merci beaucoup K3n
Happy New Year Kathryn from Gloria's Mike. "I heard that. Glad it wasn't ice falling off the roof."
😂 funny guy! 😜
I've started mine too. Used two receiving blankets & stitched together. P!an on using a 4x4 square for each week of the month, seek g together so the front is stitched with the squares & the back is the "back story" -- marrying the weekly stitching (which I loved) & the 2025 coverlet!!!
I've started mine really enjoying it, thank you for sharing your lovely ideas x
Your eco scroll is gorgeous, Kathryn. At first I thought, “Has she been stitching day and night since last week?” And then you explained that you’d filmed last week’s Park Home Life in advance. I knew you were prolific but even so, the progress on the scroll would have been insane. 😂 Loving the coverlet.
Oh yes, that would have been 24/7 stitching, too much even for me 😂♥️
This is fun. I am thinking its making more sense. So I'm ready. Glad you are feeling better. Thank you for the video
My pleasure Judy and thank you ❤️
Çalışmalarınızı çok beğeniyorum, ellerinize emeğinize yüreğinize sağlık ❤❤❤❤😊
I am one who went off on a tangent, we had a big snow so I kept busy. I used a 12 inch cloth with batting. I put a vintage nine patch in the middle and slow stitched and added various stuff all around it. I cut a 13 inch cloth to go under it and brought the edges around like you taught me to do for the hexagons, I just love that method. I will still follow along every week and use the ideas. This is perfect timing to start this project because I am sorting and culling my mountains of vintage bits. Thanks. PS I had to leave Facebook due to some issues.
I am pleased you are finding your own way Gloria ♥️
Thanks
Thank you so much ❤️
I am embarking on this project and I know I will be learning lots of new things.
I'm absolutely crazy for 9patch! Thank you K3n!
I like it! Thank❤🙏 you!
Thank you for sharing. I enjoy the process.
“Stitched into Submission “😂
thank you
Hopefully I can join you this year no teaching so far and back on the island 💕
I am so enjoying this. Is this how you made the quilt using your dad's clothes?
Similar, it was all made using the paperless piecing method but I put the whole thing together before beginning the fancy stitching ♥️
Love it ❤
❤️💖💐🥰🍀
❤
Thank you for showing . Eager to ask, is the quilt design on the kitchen table small 9x9s within large 9x9s?
Not a quilter so language maybe all wrong.
No it's three different types of block put together. I think it's three types. Square in a square, four patch and another block with little triangles. It was many years ago but I think I joined it in strips first. ❤️
Estás boazinha? Eu queria ter a tua paciência. És muito criativa e caprichosa.💐🎀😍
rewatching this morning and thought a question... how many orts tins do you have when you work?
Not to answer for her but my understanding is she is just laying things down and basting as she said she would be slow stitching it next week.
As long as it's attached enough at this stage, it's not really important. As @poodlegirl55 says, the slowstitching will join the layers together ♥️
Thank you. I don’t know why I made that harder than it needed to be. 😂 Appreciate both your responses. ❤️
Isn’t cloth wonderful, the way it allows stretching and gentle easing into shape…
Just curious. How big will this become in time?the comfort cloth.
I don't know 😁 big enough to wrap around myself. ❤️
👍🧡💐
Вы подбираете лоскутки специально такие старые, времён ушедшей молодости?
Yes I like to use cloth that is meaningful to me, with family memories ♥️
🧡❤🤎
I like it! Thank❤🙏 you!
