  • Brad asked about the Anti Rattle Clip on the 2.0t TSI turbos. Will this fix the waste gate issues? The short answer is no. The clip fixes a rattle in a different spot than waste gate failure.

    Just changed myself, took 2 mins, having front tyres changed and asked while in the air to have a look from the underside, there's two 16mm bolts to remove the down pipe heatsheild and you can see the arm tucked away but can feed hand to push clip on - massive difference gone from a tin of stones to silent

    So if you had the problem on a 20v 1.8t turbo you could just crank the wastegate tighter a few threads and snug things up. But in this case the wastegate flapper preload isn’t adjustable?

    Hey +HumbleMechanic i have a 2012 vw tiguan tsi le, and a 2012 vw beetle with the 2.5 I5. I recently purchased a VAG COM scanner from Xtool to clear the airbag light on the tiguan because i was messing around and unplugged the indicator while it was running. no big deal its fine now. MY question is what do i need to look out for on both cars the bettle has 25,000k and the tiguan 50,000k? i know the intake mani on the tsi will most likely fail but are 2012's at risk for the chain tensioner? Im a Mercedes mechanic and have several ase's. Id love to do more work on my vw's and your videos are a godsend. Thankyou! also the tiguan is on its 2nd water pump, i saw your video explaining why. Brings me back to the days of my 1.8T that ate a head because of the plastic impeller waterpump.

    Hi, I have this problem with my audi a5 2011 2.0 tfsi. So are you saying that the clip solves the problem?. I have took the car to the garage and they have told me I need new turbo even though they said the turbo is good and works very well. But to be able to fix that rattle noise the whole turbo would have to be replaced.!!. With a problem like this does it mean that potentially the turbo can go in the future?

    Hello HumbleMechanic.
    Could you help me with issue I have. I have a 1.8 tfsi CABD engine and when I start up the car when engine is cold, my engine sound weird. The sound is not loud but I can hear it. Also sometimes there is little bit white smoke when there is 15 celsius outside. If it is colder then it is more smoke. My coolant level doesn't change. Also when I drive at around 2.000 rpm if I let off the gas peddal there is like tktktktk noise I can hear but it is really quiet. Is it possible pcv system could be the issue? Now when at idle with hot engine if I open oil cap there is little pressure inside I think. That could explain little oil escaping from left side of the engine (exhaust side). Leak is not that big since oil level changes in mmi 1/4 every 6.000km.
    Any input would be great. I have obdeleven so I can do some test if you can suggest any.

    Is there no preload regulation on this rod? Old 90s VW 1.8 k03 turbos has nuts on wg rod to adjust preload. Adjusting preload helps to get rid this gate valve play.

    • @joes.7536

      albi2k88 doesn't look like it does there. Wow. I just adjusted the preload slightly on my k03 in my longitudal 1.8t to get a little more life out of the turbo and stop the rattle and it's boosting like a beast now and silent. I'm starting to really love my aeb 1.8t. It has had synthetic oil all it's life and Mann filters and it's very fun to tune on with the drive by cable setup. I'm currently running 18psi with a reflect tune and a WOT box for my no lift shifts. Cheap car and a blast to drive.

    I recently received a wastegate flapper repair kit I purchased on Amazon, and I`ve decided that while I`m replacing the flapper and bushing, I`m going to cut the end of the actuator arm off and thread it, then install a female rod end bearing on the end of the actuator arm. With a rod end bearing bolted solidly to the flapper lever, the pivot would be in the bearing which I think would be much beefier than the original setup and hopefully much less prone to wear. A silicone sleeve or bellows covering the entire area of the pivot would keep the bearing clean and dry. What do you think Charles......does this sound like a feasible cure for the actuator rattle problem?

  • @andrewduong8285

    Big fan of the channel. Wife's car 2018 audi q3 (last year ccta engine for q3) with 48k kilometers. Got the p0299 code. Went to dealer under warranty and had the turbo replaced. Now I get the wastgate rattle from 2-3k rpm. Dealer says it's normal. I called b.s. Asked to go for a ride with the service manager he agreed he hears the noise and claims normal boosting sounds. Drove another q3 on the lot didn't make the noise. Service manager claims its the turbo manifold noise, and will go away after it carbons up. They won't do anytime and I'm stuck. Do you recommend I try this clip? The car never ever rattled from new between 2-3k rpm. Only now after changing turbo. Have to escalate now with audi canada. Do you know if this clip came installed on q3s from the factory? Thanks in advance for any insight.

      @@HumbleMechanic hm. Yesterday i installed a gfb dv+ , my old was broken ( the rubber). But with the new dv on I noticed that the wastegate rattle is gone when I decrease. I only hear it now when the car standing still and i rev up to 3000+ then let go of the pedal. I read that this dv keeps a small amount off pressure to get a better throttle response. Now the car feels much more "direct" to move when you gas. Before it had to rev for like a second before it moved. Hope my broken English isn't to hard to understand 😁 but maybe this is a fix for the rattle? And now I only hear the rattle from the arm? Well I hope so 😊

  • @bbahunter6436
    @bbahunter6436 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    You know, if the rattle is minor, meaning just the play in the wastegate, the problem can be resolved without a new turbo. Especially since all it takes is a $6.00 spring assortment from Pep Boys and a little time with some dremel bits. All I did was dremel a hole through the wastegate arm, attach a spring between that and the wastegate actuator.
    Bonus is it increases the boost a few pounds, but otherwise acts stock.
    Saved me a few thousand dollars getting the same crap engineering with a new turbo that's going to do the same thing again...and chances are the car will be sold before the turbo itself actually dies.

Though i can recall hearing this rattle on the ride home from buying as it was used at 16k miles I have now confirmed that the rattle has made its way to the wastegate itself upon stock downpipe removal.

      Mike - How loud is your rattle when you noticed it? After going with a turboback on my MK6, I'm now hearing a loud rattle whenever I touch the gas (exhaust isn't hitting any heat shields). Take your foot off and it immediately goes away. I've tried to get audio of it, but it's hard to pick up on the camera - it's much louder in person.

    • @mildlyhot1
      @mildlyhot1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah its hard to hear in the cabbin, I have a video on my channel that shows my waste gate. Its most prevelent when going from idle to acceleration and the sound tends to get deadened out by the engine/exhaust by about 1600rpm but its like a slight metalic jingle.

    • @BritishGuy79
      @BritishGuy79 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's harder to hear in the cabin, but when driving down an HOV lane with concrete barriers each side, it's really loud and sounds like you're shaking washers on a wire coat hanger. Boost is fine right now, but I've a feeling a new turbo is coming. Thanks man!

Having the dealership flash that one and reinstall the original. But VW will offer me almost double what it’s worth. So if I can hold out til 2017 for the Passat r line with manual………

      Why do you want to get rid of the TDI? You get good power and great mpg. What more can you ask for? It's still a good car. (unless it's been unreliable). The state will never fail your emissions because you didn't get the fix. Charles might could weigh in, can you say you don't want the ecu flash and the dealer listen to you?
