- Dustin Kensrue performing a powerful acoustic cover of Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus live from the Carry the Fire tour at The Irenic in San Diego, CA on June 5. 2015. This was shot on a Sony Cyber-shot HX50V. Due to the lights pointing almost directly at where I was standing, there are lens flares in pretty much 100% of the videos. Also the color of the lights didn't really sit well with my camera, but oh well.

Crowd clearly had no idea they were standing in front of one of those most emotionally powerful persons of rock music. Dustin is raw poetry and wisdom.

Cody Martinez the crowd is a bunch of idiots. This song is amazing. Sorry all the Hannah Montana-My daddy wrote a famous song in the 90’s-I grew up rich-tongue sticking out in every picture-crap of Miley Cyrus. The song itself is amazing
Couldn’t have put it better. Starts with derisive chuckles, ends with a pin drop being heard and everyone’s breath being taken away.
After watching this a dozen times or so, I love how the people giggle during the first couple bars immediately STFU when they realize he's not kidding. This song is beautiful and he does an incredible job bringing the emotion out of it. Thank you Dustin for being you. More of this
Grown men giggling at the fact that Dustin Kensrue is covering Miley Cyrus is really disrespectful. The man is poring his heart out through his art and what is a great song.
Their giggles are disrespectful, I agree, but it also goes to show that they were still moved. Whether they have the emotional capacity to handle it or not is another story ahah I bet they were fighting back tears during Dustin's strong ending.
He shut that crowd up quick. He took a song they hated and pulled tears of joy out of their very eyes with it then said "you're welcome for your new open minds. peace"
Almost 5 years after this performance and that statement still rings true. This man can invoke emotionality out of a bag of rocks.
I was actually at this show. He's my favorite artist hands down and to see him in a tiny place like The Irenic was a treat. When he started playing this we all (as you can hear) chuckled bc we were like "Seriously??" - before we knew it everyone was mesmerized and when he stepped back from the mic to belt out the song we all had goosebumps. His rendition was so powerful.
I love how at about 3:45 everyone stops laughing, gets quiet, and realizes, "He just pulled this off and I like this song..."

It was only your least favorite song because of your own judgemental attitudes. It's always been a beautiful song, it just took an artist you deem worthy of your praise covering it for you to be able to recognize that. Try to recognize a song for what it is, don't let your own preconceived notions surrounding whoever wrote the song influence your appreciation for the art. Dustin clearly does not.

It's amazing to see the crowd laughing because that is a very particular song for Dustin to cover but by the end everyone is quiet listening to such an amazing piece that wouldn't have been otherwise if Dustin wouldn't have covered it.

Best Performance on TH-cam. Crowd thinks hes joking and realize this is a serious take. And it is seriously incredible. Im in nantucket and ill never forget where and when i heard this MASTERPIECE. When he steps awY from the mike this turns epic...and when he closes he does so like a fricken wrecking ball....kills it!

This cover is 100% more powerful and emotionally raw than the original version. Not that Miley isn't talented, but this made me feel a completely different way.
One of those few times where the person covering the song just outdoes the original artist so hard. Like Johny Cash covering Hurt, Wrecking Ball is now owned by Dustin
I've watched this video dozens of times and it still makes me tear up every time. I never would have imagined myself liking this song to begin with, but Dustin is a master at subverting expectations. I would have loved to have been there at that show

He nailed the song, but more importantly, he saw through the preconceptions of “a pop song” and realized just how well this song was written. The lyrics stand alone, but most “mature” adults fail to even notice them while they obsessively gawk at the idol they’ve created in their own perception (i.e. Miley Cyrus)
Now, some are appreciative/reverent of their newly discovered alternative to the idol they deemed unworthy of their reverence, so they “put him high up in the sky”. The idol will always come down though, due to the nature of idolatry
Meanwhile... the words remain unheard by those who lack the ears to hear them
I always liked this song, the words , but never the way it was so poppy and mainstream. Now listening to this made me smile so much and cry a little cuz the style and the song were perfect for each other, thanks Dustin you freaking music angel

2019 still getting the chills
A few years ago I was driving across the Mohave with two of my best friends listening to this... it takes me back everytime I watch it.
This is honestly such a jaw-droopingly beautiful rendition of this song and seeing it played so honestly with such raw emotion is moving...
This is so good. You can really notice how in the first half, the people are giggling because he chose such a "strange" song to cover. However, in the last chorus the people start cheering because they just realized how Dustin managed to turn a song like this into a masterpiece by his voice and guitar alone.

People are giggling and they can tehehehe all they want, but that is actually a really great song. A lot of people can't get over Miley Cyrus' gimmicks and actually listen to some of her songs, they're really good....great cover btw. It took some guts and you killed it.

As someone that grew up listening to artist in the ambulance his new style of voice is so unsettling. Who could have that thrice had such beautiful vocal chords. LinkinJoze very interesting. we give a lot of pop stars a lot of flack for their music, but when you have an artist like Dustin cover the song, you realize the lyrics are pretty decent and filled with meaning. Context is really everything.

Because it all got lost on everyone when Miley made it more about her riding naked on an actual wrecking ball. The only thing stripped here is the song, and the best is how halfway through the crowd stops laughing and has their "holy shit" moment.
***** I hated Imogen Heap when I was young. I heard Dustin cover her "Hide & Seek" song and loved it, to the point that I was willing to listen to the original. didn't mind it. grew on me rather quickly.
***** no. pop stars still suck. it took Dustin covering the song, which is not written by Miley but performed, for us to realize the actual power of the song. most pop stars deserve all the flack we throw their way if they're walking to the bank with a bunch of people's money.
He made a fantastic point. When you tear away alot of the bullshit of a pop song some of them are and can be really fucking good. I mean...most of those songs are written by some amazing studio cats. They're just sold to pop stars. This is a great example of what most of those can be when torn down to a simple chord progression and some really strong vocals.

It's a beautiful song in it's original incantation but Dustin definitely makes the song his own and adds so much more weight to the words in this stripped down rendition and how he sings/belts out the lyrics.
