- Long stitch is so versatile! It's a great beginner friendly binding for multi-signature books. I typically use plain old long stitch to make instax photo albums, but there are many variations. I'm trying some new bindings from a series of books by Keith Smith.
The book referenced in this video is called "Non-Adhesive Binding: Books without Paste or Glue by Keith A. Smith". Spoiler alert, I used glue :)
Keith Smith's books are text heavy and could use more pictures and illustrations, but flipping through them gave me so many new techniques and ideas. They go deep into the bindings and its variations, something I crave from many books about bookbinding. I was able to find the books at my local library.

My favorite was the last one with the straps. Thank you for these stitches; they will come in handy.
Tip for anyone doing the longstitch: don't use bookcloth! I tore the fabric as I was cutting the slits and it was a horrible ugly mess! If you do wan't to use bookcloth I suggest covering the spine and 20-30mm from the each side of the spine edge with cardstock or decorative paper, and then using your bookcloth for the remaining cover space to the foredge. This will save your bookcloth and make your book look unique!
Loved your video as usual, very comprehensive and calming. My go to quick hardcover binding now is sewing onto straps. The cover rounding almost naturally as a result of the tapes being glued to the boards is such a nice effect since you don't need to round the textblock in this case to achieve that rounded effect.

I love the variety you are using! Most bookbinders do the same thing over and over, but the stitches are so much part of the design of your books, it is refreshing! I thought the buttonhole was an odd idea, but I think it is actually my favorite! :)

I really like the last one best and like the thickness of the tape supports! I like them all though.
I love the tape bound one, I'll be trying that one myself soon too! I recently borrowed about 20 books from the library, and had to extend the loan on them as much as i could so i could get through them all! Some were focused on the art and some the traditional aspects. The oldest book published that i borrowed was from 1954 and it was interesting just to read the history of bookbinding in the introduction of that book.

I love the tape binding best! I've seen rustic ones made w/o a cover too. I make junk journals so I use a lot of vintage or antique papers, so binding is always delicate, but worth the effort! P.S. I ❤️ Sea Lemon, too! She was my first bookbinding tutorial channel. Have you ever watched Stopan? He's a master bookbinder and his handmade treasures sell for $800 to over $1300! His videos are inspiring!
button hole stitch is one of my favorite binding methods, but i've been anxious to try long stitch. after seeing this i don't understand why. it's so simple, but i've never physically seen someone do it, i've only read how to do it. BUT i'm going to try it now and i'm really excited!

For the first one, instead of a "spine tab", I think I would make a cute bookmark to slide in there! Then you just pull it out when you ned it! Alternatively, it could be nice to slide a ribbon in there too1

I can't choose just one, they're all so beautiful! I like how you put together the covers simply by folding the lovely paper over cardstock, I'll be trying that for sure. I have a couple of Keith's books, but I get tangled up in the written words and need more visuals. But I'm not going to give up on trying. Just the other day, I had to improvise because I punched my holes for a Coptic binding, 7 holes in each of the 8 signatures, but I changed my mind and decided I wanted a spine. Not thinking, I punched the holes in the cover as well. When it sunk in with what I had done, I panicked a little because I thought, how am I going to find a step-by-step video to sew this when I don't even know what the pattern is called? But I calmed myself down and decided to do a pamphlet stitch pattern (without looking at a tutorial!), and it worked! It was a turning point for me, and it felt so good. Thank you for your lovely videos, they're so inspiring.

This is off topic. But have you thought about using wallpaper for some of you book coverings? Or what do you think about it? Too heavy perhaps? And probably more expensive than fabric. Just a thought. I’m definitely going to look into it. Thank you for all your lovely posts. You’ve been such an inspiration to me.
I wanted to have a bias as Gouache seemed easier, but I like the looks of both! So no bias any longer!

@@bittermelonbindery I made the last book yesterday and use light canvas strips. I t looked okay when I put the print over the tabs. I mailed it to a friend and she will let me know how it holds up. I was so excited by the video I ordered Vol 1. My husband ordered Vol 2 for my birthday and I will get Vol 3 for Christmas. Thank you for the inspiration and your thoughtful replies.

I'm trying to find a video with info on sewing tapes. Where do you get yours and do you have a video where you are just making a journal with exposed sewing tapes?
In this video I made the tape by folding the long edges of a strip of book cloth towards the midline and glued it down. You can use any stiff ribbon from the arts and crafts/sewing store. I also use linen tapes for sewing text blocks from Colophon Book Arts.

All of the stitches shown are variations of one and the same button hole. It annoys me that each bookbinder feels a need to invent own titles, makes it almost impossible to find proper information on the internet.
yes bookbinding can be very repetitive, most stitches are variations of another
