My tip for overcoming the anxiety: Look at the stewardess or steward. They almost always look calm, going about their regular duties. Think about how many flights they have been on. Think about the number of stewardesses and stewards that are retired and were flying in times when aviation was much less safe.
It keeps my mind busy and always makes me feel more relaxed.

Something that's helped me alittle while riding on planes is looking out the window briefly when you can see land. Because during turbulence it seems like the plane is all over the place moving fast. Which it is moving fast but by looking out the window and seeing roads, cars, land etc below I'm able to to see that the plane seem like it's just cruising steadly with just minor disruption from the turbulence. That helps me to realize the plane is still in control. Obviously if you're scared don't look out the window when the plane is turning( like it's on its side, which it's not) but just take a glimpse out when you're scared and able to see land or even clouds below sometimes. Trust me you will see that the plane isn't in this terrible storm jumping all over the place.

I've only flown a few times and the last time I flew was a little better. But I'm still scared. I pray a lot and am so grateful when we land. I've never experienced turbulence 😬 thank God. I've learned it's a combination of a terrifying death and lack of control. I know that may sound illogical but that's how it is for me. It's a blessing to be able to fly but even more of a blessing that we make it anywhere safely.

Being a pilot, some of the information he gave wasn't correct. I can understand why he said incorrect things but still. There is some weather even the biggest planes can't fly through, the wings will be ripped off. On saying that, we have weather instruments and weather forecasts to tell us so we don't fly into these conditions. Also, even if you are in an aircraft incident, you will likely survive, only a small percentage are actually dual engine loss resulting in a crash from 30,000ft. Also, the reason why Hollywood makes so many plane crash movies and aircraft investigations are because they are rare, they simply couldn't make an episode on every crash let alone fatal car crash. Finally, if flying was really that dangerous would millions of people have their pilots licence?
You'll be fine, it's all in your head.

"If the plane goes down the odds of you surviving are very slim." In case anyone was worried about this comment, it's actually not as slim as you might think. The US National Transportation Safety Board did a review of airplane accidents from 1983-2000 and 95% of people in airplane crashes survived the accidents. 55% if you look at the more serious ones... which is still more than half. 2017 was deemed the safest year for air travel as well. Plane wings can bend to extremes and the plane is built to withstand accidents and as time goes on planes are only getting safer and better built.

    • @MrsBumblefuppersOldAccount

    • @MrsBumblefuppersOldAccount
      @MrsBumblefuppersOldAccount 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

anyways, i ended up flying not too long after i made this comment and the flight went well!!! i know its not as easy as seeing flights go well for others but try to remember that airlines don't want their planes to crash and so they put in tons of resources to prevent them from doing so. frequent evaluations of pilots, consistent testing of planes, plans in place for emergencies, etc. Planes can fly even if one engine fails and in the scenario of both failing they're built to be able to glide safely to the ground without them.

@@MrsBumblefuppersOldAccount what is your number one advice against fear of flying? 😅

    • @MrsBumblefuppersOldAccount
      @MrsBumblefuppersOldAccount 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@sana-ub8nz Look into what your airline offers! I've found quite a lot of them are now including flight trackers. I was on southwest and was able to see exactly where we were, how fast we were going, and the estimated time left. It made me feel a bit more in control! I also tried to sit in the aisle seat so that if I felt any panic creeping in I could get up and walk to the bathroom to take some deep breaths by myself. Bringing some music may also help! Sometimes our brains focus too much on the noises going on that are completely normal and listening to some calming music can distract from the anxiety a bit. Distractions like books you enjoy or movies help too!!! I would constantly remind myself of the facts that I stated above because I find that having a solid grounding to remind yourself that you're safe is very helpful.

I developed that "are we all going in the right direction?" Phobia to the point that I'm afraid to look at the the plane map on my tv screen. Haha. Funny but... that's just my wonky self. Oh and "I hope the the wheels and landing gear is still attached."
A funny story if you're still reading this, I had a short flight from Jamaica to Miami and the pilot came on and said " of you can see to our left that's a pretty big ehhh storm.. don't like it. We're safe but ehhh.. I'm gonna ehhhh tell the flight staff to sit down. Eehhhh it's okay but ehhh ya.. in don't like it. So buckle up. I don't understand why the person did not mention weight, balance and moment. So if you take a board and hold it out straight, and it is 4 feet long you can hold with out much difficulty...put a brick on it next to your hand and it is heaver but as you move it out towards the end know as increasing the moment it becomes harder to hold. What does this have to do with and airplane. Well the CG is the point where the aircraft balance and is also where the ride in flight is the smoothest...so getting seats over the wings or close to it will not be as rough.

I used to fly without a problem a lot, all of the sudden Im scared of turbulance at cruising altitude, what the heck? I think about how fast and high we are that the plane can desintegrate easier due to pressures, it sounds dumb but I dont know where it came from. I am perfectly fine below 10k ft

Right there with you my friend. Not a fan of takeoff or Landing either, but it's the cruise part of the plane that gives me the most anxiety. Just something about being that high off the ground that if something did happen it would be catastrophic.
What sucks the most about it is it's always the longest stage of the flight LOL

I flew from Orlando to New Orleans and back, from Orlando to Denver and back, and lastly my recent vacation from Orlando to Phoenix and flew back yesterday.. my first 4 flights I have never even experience turbulence until this Phoenix trip there and back. Which sucked both ways. The landing yesterday was terrible. I've help build the new terminal c and worked at some of the other terminals through the years as a welder, so I've always seen plans land and my house is 15 mins from the airport but for years I've always seen the plans land at Orlando Airport well driving down hwy 528 which is literally beside the landing strip. So when we were coming in hard yesterday I knew it.. I just knew we were coming in steep, hard and fast and sure enough it was a rough landing. Felt like the front wheel should have popped off as hard a we hit the ground.

I just read the book, "Flight 232," the story of the DC-10 Sioux City Iowa crash. Captain Alfred Haynes saved 186 people by being a stud pilot! I watch "Air Disasters" almost every day and have a huge fear of crashing, not flying. I love flying, it's the crashing part that bums me out. I don't trust maintenance crew, schedules, pressures to be on time. Seems like everything is rushed which causes me fear. I am fearful of flying because I chose to be. It's more fun this way!

I'm one of those who is afraid of takeoff and landing.... A very nice woman showed me how to hug myself to regulate my nervous system.... put your left hand, thumb out, under your right armpit and vice versa and then apply as much pressure to your chest as you can with your arms by hugging your ribcage. It works. I don't know how it works, and I don't care. It works. Probably not for everyone, but it's worth a try.

Tips and tricks from a person who went through this fear!
( sorry if there are any mistakes)
      Facts:
      1. Planes nowadays are one of the safest and fastest transports!
      2. Take off is not always bad, it depends of the captain and plane!
      3. Flying after take off is like staying at home, u do not fell the plane moving( mostly on big planes)
      4. The bigger the plane the better!
      5. If u have a long flight I would recommend to save up for bisness class!
      Tricks
      1. How to make time to faster
      - watch movies
-try to sleep or close ur eyes
      - go to the toilet and explore it
      2. How time goes by
-lets say u have an 9 hour flight
      • the first hour goes by very fast
•u can watch movies for minimum of 3-4 hours
      • u will sleep at least 1 hour
      • hour goes for eating
      • 1 hour movies
      • 1 hour before landing goes very fast!
      - which leaves us with only 1 hour left!
      Tips:
      - where to sit,I personally recommend the middle part, and take the outside part, so u have space and don't bottlper people getting up
      - food, depends on you, but I recommend eating something that is NOT fried and eat something healthy, since it will give u energy and u will fell better!
      - drinks- as for teens I recommend to get a coca-cola to keep u in good condition or water with lemon which is my personal favorite and would recommend 10/10 ( keeps u anergyzerd and gives u motivation to drink more water), as for adults a good old wine will give u a good sleep or again whatever u want! DO NOT GET TEA OR COFFEE, MOSTLY IT HAS BACKETERIA!
Storytime of me having my long flight:
last month I had to do an 8 hour flight AND OVER THE OCEAN, and before that I had a 3 hour flight! The first flights take off was literally so scary for me and I thought I was gonna die,but there was nothing I could do then just to calm myself. We landed and I was so thankful, but next was the 8 hour flight from London to Washington DC! 2 minutes before boarding my plane I felt sick and I was literally unconscious, since I was so scared! I boarded last with my family and it happened that we got free bisness class! I was amazed and everything in it made it way better! The first 2 hours were an amazing experience and umm, since I didn't eat for around 10-11 hours i had no energy and literally couldn't move and I wanted to sleep so bad! But I just couldn't, I kept waking up and releasing I am in the air flying hundreds of feet up! Thankfully my mum calmed me and told me everything will be fine and I slept for 4 hours! When I woke up I was so happy, that we were landing! When we landed I felt so happy and relaxed! And ofc I did have to get back, and ummm.. long story short, but we took of and when we were over Greenland we took back to Boston since there was a problem with one of the engines,we had one extra night in the USA in Boston, which felt magical, the next day we finally went home we flew for only 7 hours and I didn't sleep the whole time I watched 6 movies and I was finally home!
THANKS FOR READING I WISH U LUCK WITH UR FLIGHT! REMEMBER EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY! 💗

I like how this reporter handled this, she asked great questions but as a daughter of a rolls Royce engineer who makes part of the airplane engines the questions should be about turbulence or even how a plane takes off as this is basic physics but it's the trust you have to put in the manufacturing and maintenance process, the trust you have to have in the people that make these parts and on your fellow passengers and pilot! If the pilot decides he wants to end it and crash into the sea like MH370 then what's stopping him/her.
