Correction, it is unclear if Jefferson had relations with that slave. Genetically there were other possibilities besides him. A nephew I think being the most likely.
Most of us don't like our heroes being maligned. Jefferson did a marvelous work in the Declaration of Independence. But his character and judgment was poor (in my humble opinion) in a number of areas. Of course we will never know the true relationship between Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, but the preponderance of evidence, I think seems to support his having sexual relations with her.
