      Cane sugar soda's is all in your head, "real" sugar the acid in the soda chemically breaks the Sucrose. Giving you a 50/50 ratio of Fructose and Glucose, which is almost the same ratio when you HFCS which is 55 to 42

      I wish they would return to the old formula. They use to use sugar, not frutos and corn syrup. That gave it a more smoothness and the head of foam was greater. The foam would actually stay on your lip when you drank it without a straw. I spent the last year trying to find that experience I remember from the 1960's and 1970's. I have tried dozens of brands and I've come to the conclusion it does not exist any longer.

    I grew up in Philadelphia and as a child enjoyed Hires root beer. It was available everywhere and at most old soda fountains came in draft from a large old fashioned designed barrel. It is hard to find now and I don’t even know if it still available. I have drank most of the leading brands shown in the video. My favorites as noted were the smaller craft type of sodas. We have Hanks and Franks soda fairly available in the Philadelphia area and both of them are great old fashion full flavored root beers. I also found a root beer made by the beer brewery that also has a soda line from Utica, Ny. that is available at my beer distributer. It is higher priced but is a real rich flavorful root beer. 🍺 I also like root beer for the fact most are caffeine free so I can enjoy one at night and still can get to sleep. So try one and enjoy a full flavored soda that has many varied tastes depending on the brand.

    I have tried pretty much every kind that existed during the 1970's through today. I can honestly say, that HIRES was actually the best overall. Types like Barq's and Mug always made my stomach cramp up and tasted weird. A&W always tasted weak/watered down to me(and still does today). Dad's was...ok. and others didn't measure up to much. I LOVED Hires because the taste was much more richer and smoother than the rest.

    I am in agreement with the store bought A&W being subpar to the fountains at an A&W stand. They are the top of my Root Beer preferences, my store bought bottled (not canned) is Barqs. In truth I have not tried IBC or some of the other names you have on your sample list.
    I'm still looking for that taste I had in 1965 in Avondale AZ A&W Rootbeer stand I was 17, we would hit that stand about once a month from 62-66. When I left home and started making my way as an adult.

    Caffeine isn't forbidden in the LDS Church or Utah. There are caffeinated drinks in every store and BYU' big drink sponsor is Coca Cola.
    Avoiding caffeine is as much a health tip as anything else. Like "don't eat too much fast food". Barq's just provides it for people who don't want caffeine in it.
    I had a can of Coke at a church event a few weeks back and no one slapped it out of my hand and called me a heretic. This is a stereotype.

      Sort of. They are free to choose, but in order to qualify for temple worship or baptism they cannot consume caffeine.

    • @bekker3544
      @bekker3544 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Beat me to it. It's the tea plant and coffee bean that's "forbidden". It's not a stretch to assume that the high caffeine content is a reason for that, but caffeine is not in and of itself forbidden. Many Mormons consume caffeine in soft drinks without a second thought. Some families do raise their kids to avoid it more specifically, like mine did, but like said above it really was about health. My father was adamantly against caffeinated drinks, and raised me that way, but the argument was always one of health over anything else. That said, if the choice is between getting two root beers for a church event or party, and one has caffeine while the other doesn't, Utahns would likely pick the caffeine-free one because it's just easier. It isn't as though there aren't many options for caffeine-free root beer to begin with. That said, I don't think Barq's is very good anyway. Mug is fine, A&W is amazing. And IBC isn't bad.

      @@neomage2021no, not true. We don’t drink coffee and tea. That was what began the idea that we don’t drink caffeine. Even some members of our church interpreted it that way, but it was never actually true. I go to the temple regularly and drink Dr Pepper.

    Root beer and ginger ale did originally contain low levels of alcohol, which is why they were carbonated. Low levels of alcohol, hence the term SOFT drink. The carbonation came about as a reaction between sugar and yeast fermenting. The fermentation process is shorter than beer, ale, wine, etc, with higher levels of alcohol.
    Even today you can brew your own soft drinks at home. Home brewing suppliers like Norther Brewer sell the ingredients. I have made root beer and orange soda at home this way.
