Unfortunately, this was soooo common and normalized. These poor impressionable young girls were easily manipulated, didn’t know any better and nobody advocated for them. The other women in their family were mostly likely prayed upon and forced to marry and have children too. Misogyny and generational curses are a powerful thing.

I believe he didn’t have intercourse with her because he liked her innocence but he groomed her and per her own words, they did other things. She just never specified what those things were but I’m sure we can use our imagination.

When I was 13 I started to see an older guy. He was around 21 and I thought I loved him so much. He was nice to me, he listened to me, he told me I was so mature. But the things we were doing really affected me negatively. I started to have a lot of issues, I would shower three times a day at least for about two years because I felt so dirty. I didn’t know how to cope with the pressure he was putting on me, I wanted to tell my parents but I was afraid of getting in trouble or he would get in trouble. Eventually I told him I couldn’t do it anymore he threatened me and said he would hurt me. I couldn’t sleep for a full night for four or five years after that. I developed a eating disorder. My point is no matter what sick predilections you have, leave the kids out of it because they can’t handle the pressure you put on them. I still struggle today.

The law passed that adults can't marry 13 year olds are fairly new just recent, that wasn't a thing 100 years ago when it was a different world. Modern people need to stop looking at the past from a modern perspective and look at it through context and understanding. If the law still allowed for that to happen we'd still be doing it if you really look at it, which I gotta wonder what is actually right and what is actually wrong? The average age a person would get married if they wanted to marry young was 17 or 18, after they finished high school. And the fact that even people back then were outraged by the marriage should prove marrying that young was not very common.

I used to love the movie Great Balls of Fire as a kid but I rewatched it recently and I found it quite disturbing, the way they glorified Jerry and turned an illegal, immoral and predatory relationship into comedy just feels so wrong. These things happened then in the Deep South and Appalachia. Still do to some extent. Watch the documentary from around 2000 entitled " American Hollow " about 50+ people all from related families who had lived in a valley in East Kentucky for several generations..

Back in the 50s, my grandma was 16 and a 21 year old man who was an airmen with my great grandpa asked her parents for permission to marry her. Thankfully even back then, my great grandparents said, "Absolutely not, she's too young."

Blame Jerry all you want, but her parents were culpable too! Okay, so dear old dad couldn't find Jerry right after the wedding, but you don't just go lookin' for one day and give up. A good beat down can wait until the right time comes around. I am convinced Jerry paid off Myra's parents. He was making $10,000 per performance in 1957 ($105k 2022). Jerry broke a lot of laws to marry Myra even back then. Everyone was turning a blind eye when it came to this girl's wellbeing.
