    UPDATE (for anyone who has this problem...) I double-deleted the sections/page breaks and re-applied the sections.... Now I can finally work on the page numbers in the two sections independently. I got the document from a client and brought it over from PC/Word (via OpenOffice). So it's been saved in a couple other applications trying to sort out the formatting... Just a glitch I guess. I have had difficulty with page numbering long ago in both Word and Pages, so I assumed it was just quirks of the software
    Thank you again for the video 🌷
    ORIGINAL QUESTION:
    Hi, thanks for this. I am in Word Processing Mode and no matter what I do, page numbers get added to BOTH sections or NEITHER section. I have two sections - the contents etc and then the actual book). I don't want page numbers in the first part of the book. As it stands If I delete just select the second section and add page numbers I end up with BOTH sections numbered: 1-8 and1-100 ... If I try deleting just the page numbers on the first section, ALL page numbers on both sections delete.
    Frustrating that it's such a complicated thing to do (found it even harder on Word and Open Office) 😵
    Thanks in advance if you can answer.

    I recently did a bi-lingual document that needed two page 1’s, etc. I couldn’t get pages to do it, I’d set a new section, edit a bit, and see the sections were being ignored. After a dozen times I gave up an I saved it as a word file and used Word on my PC. Again, THANK YOU FOR THIS! For all of these.

    Hello,
    I am working on my book in Pages on my Mac. I selected a book template, which is a word processing document. The book is just about finished, but I cannot get the pages to number continuously.
    I have different headers for each chapter, so my book has sections. When I type in the page number where I want the numbering to start, it repeats on the following pages. What I type in on the right side in the footer for a page number(two-page view) repeats the same number on the right side. The same thing happens on the left side.
    I have watched your videos, and followed the directions, but I must be doing something wrong. I can’t even get it to number the pages continuously let alone get them to start where I want them to start. Please help, as I am about to give up. Thank you.

      If you put a number, like "17" in a header or footer, you are telling it you want that number on all pages of your section. You need to use "Insert Page Number" like I show in this video.

    • @CarrieClarke-t9f
      @CarrieClarke-t9f หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@macmost I have tried that, but it only allows me to select the format of the numbering and insert the number it has chosen for me, and then it does not continue. I got it to add continuous even numbers on the left side, but then when a new section starts, it starts over with a new number. Even when I click on the number suggested when I select “Insert Page Number” it gives me a different number. Your videos have been very helpful in getting the different chapter titles in the heading, but this page numbering is the first time I’ve ever had such a problem. I have even tried to Insert Page Number from the “Insert” icon, and then go to Document; Section: Page Numbering: Start at: 2 for the second page as I don’t want the page number on the first page of he chapter, and it inserts a 3 instead of a 2. The rest of the pages continue until I get to the next chapter, and then no numbers. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong…. Please help me! Thank you. Carrie

      @@CarrieClarke-t9f It sounds like you are almost there. You have to put the page number in the header/footer for each section. If you are using facing pages, you have to do it for the left and right too. Keep working at it.

    Hey Gary! Thanks for this!
    Is it possible to have the header and the footer use different settings? Say I wanted to have page numbers on the footer always showing but the ones in the header hidden on the first page of every section, how would I do it?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No, they are both or none. So you would maybe make the first page of a section its own section, then the rest of that section another section.

    Gary, but for instance, i have a document, and first page is title page then maybe followed by some other stuff, and say actual document starts on page 3 of document, can i make it page 1 and start counting from there? Thank you, as always.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Start a new section and have the numbering start on page 1 like I show here.

    How to remove a number from the second page of a document? I made a new section that allows me to number from the introduction of my thesis, but it turned out my index (the second page of my document) has been numbered as well. I want the numbers to start from the introduction. How do I fix this?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have the second page be its own section so it can have its own page numbering settings like I show in this video.

    Seems odd that switching to Page Layout Mode eliminates all the text in the body of an existing Word Processing Mode doc. I guess if you start a doc in WP mode, and then want to switch to PL mode, you could copy from WP mode and then paste into PL mode?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two very different modes. If you only have a bit of text typed so far, then copy and paste will work. Probably just create a new document, set it to Page Layout mode, and copy from the old document.

    Are there some way to reverse numbering in pages? (I mean: in a document with 200 pages, last page numered with 1 an first page numered with 200)

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      None that I can think of. What's your goal here? If I knew the "why" maybe I could suggest something.

  • @NorthernerSongs
    @NorthernerSongs ปีที่แล้ว

    You suggestion doesn't work for me.
    I need to put the first page of chapter 1 of my book (page 10 in real time) as page 1.
    I am in document mode.
    No matter what I do, Pages will NOT allow me to add a numeral "1" anywhere besides the title page (actual 1st page of document) of my book manuscript.
    When I get to FORMAT, then STYLE, both "page numbering" and "create a new section" are greyed out.
    Nothing i do will change this.
    I tried converting to Page Layout and it just deletes my entire manuscript.
    For such a common, simple thing as numbering a manuscript just like EVERY OTHER BOOK IN THE WORLD, you would think Pages would have this dialed. I'll be super happy if this is just user error. Please show me how I'm doing something wrong.
    It's so strange that after over a year's work, taking so much of my life in different ways, that publishing my book is now waiting on such a small seemingly easy fix, that just won't happen.
    Please help :)

      Use Sections. Those first 9 pages are one section. Then page 10 starts a second section. In that section, put a page number in the header or footer (must be in the header or footer) and have it start with number 1. I show how to use Sections here in this video.
