Thank you very much for sharing this information on Maugham's life. I have only discovered his writings this year at the age of 80. I truly love and enjoy his works. I was very much aware of , OF Human Bondage and The Razors's Edge but did not know they were based on his writings. I think I have found a real treasure in discovering S. MAUGHAM. What an amazing and lifted soul he was. He has left much for us to think, ponder and meditate on. RIP dear Somerset Maugham and thank you so much.❤
It seems to me the right voice for Maugham. Great stories. I met his nephew Robin Maugam, also a writer and barrister, in Ibiza in 1973. This meeting and others made me wonder of the years if being homosexual, as he was, is in some way genetic.
Oh my lawd, he was bi. I guess she found that out only after marrying him. That is the worst betrayal. I would have divorced him on the spot, after finding out this little titbit of his. So far, it has been proven that most bi-sexual men are more gay than bi. They tend to be bi, just to keep up appearances for the societal norms, but they are actually gay. And always it has to do with grown ups still looking to fill that void of proper dad love. In Maugham's case, he lost both parents at an early age, so he was looking for both.
This was wonderful and showed me the details of his life. I only wish my mother and her sister, both avid fans of the writer were still alive to hear/read this. They both introduced me to his books and I've been a fan since my 20's. I thought "The Painted Veil " was a good movie; as was the classic "The Razor's Edge" (both versions). I've just been listening to the South Seas stories and am impressed. The Santa Fe Opera staged "The Letter" a few years back, and it too was very good. So nice to know there are Maugham fans at this point; his life was fascinating !

Thank you for this and for uploading so much of his work. A joy to explore.
I've read and loved Maugham since high school. This was a very good tribute to him.
Thankyu I really enjoyed this
Thank you so much for this 💖
Marvelous essay. Thank you for your superlative collection of short stories. The AI narration is uncannily convincing.
Thanks. Very enjoyable.
I have missed this "narrator" doing WSM, thanks for this upload.
I also like this voice although it is obviously AI. No one who speaks english so well would not pronounce some of the words in the way they are.

Sometimes the pronunciation of various words grates eg pronunciation of the French city of Nice.
Superb sir thank you

He could never have come out in his time .... being gay must have affected his development, as it had many of us ...
Not AI
Arch, possibly AI, narration is too harsh on my ear. Pity, this is probably an interesting read.
You get used to it, so don't be put off. So many v v amusing WSM's stories on this site.
@anotherblonde Thanks Tina, maybe I'll give it another go later.
I like the voice!
@gailjohnson3564 I'm happy for you Gail. WSM was a great storyteller so there's much for you to enjoy here.
