  • Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

    Introduction
    NPT, is an international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.
    Nuclear-weapon states
    Those nations that have built and tested a nuclear explosive device before 1 January 1967.
    The United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China.
    Others states will consider as non nuclear weapon states.

    Central theme of NPT
    1. The NPT non-nuclear-weapon states agree never to acquire nuclear weapons and the NPT nuclear-weapon states in exchange agree to share the benefits of peaceful nuclear technology and to pursue nuclear disarmament aimed at the ultimate elimination of their nuclear arsenals.
    2. To strengthen the NPT Nuclear Suppliers Group was formed and the enhanced the powers of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
    Three Pillars of NPT
    1. Non-proliferation.
    2. Disarmament.
    3. The right to peacefully use nuclear technology.
    Why India did not sign NPT?
    1. It is a discriminatory treaty and favors five powerful nations who possess nuclear weapons already.
    2. No plan for complete disarmament.
    3. Against the national security of India.
    4. No provisions for the protection of Non nuclear weapon states against the attack of Nuclear weapon states.
    5. It is against the National Interest of India.
