AE 0.1CC Diesel Model Engine Micro

  • This is a video of the tiny 0.1CC AE diesel two stroke engine. My example shows so-so worksmanship, but the piston and liner fit was acceptable. The tank screws were filed to length and the needle was defective. The needle valve and venturi were replaced with an old Super Tigre part for an idle circuit from a carb. After sorting out the needle and compression settings it starts and runs fairly well. It doesn't make much power turning a Cox 3x1.25 prop at 18,000 rpm. The built in tank is very small and suitable for free flight. i intend to build an RC model and a larger tank to replace the stock one. Testing was done with a small external tank. These were produced by Allen Engineering in the UK in the 199's. They are not available today except for Ebay where they turn up once or twice a year at 100-200 USD.

    The compression ratio is adjusted by the screw in the head. The top of the cylinder contains what is called a contra-piston which moves in the cylinder to vary clearance volume.

    Ran many an .049 back in the day, but did not know there was a diesel! So cool it starts with no glow plug!

    • @peterdarr383
      @peterdarr383 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the .049 was a two stroke diesel - ignition from the platinum glow wire and compression. Nitro reacts to platinum initiating combustion.

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@peterdarr383it was a "semi-diesel", as it did not fire off compression alone. It also relied on a catalytic reaction (heat) with the methanol in the fuel and the platinum in the glow plug element.
      Edit: It wasn't the nitro that reacted with the platinum, it was the methanol. The nitro was just there as a power booster.
      There were classes of airplane racers that actually required a ZERO nitro fuel in those engines. The fuel was simply methanol and a lubricant. No nitro in it at all.

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There was also a special head available back in the day to convert an .049 into a true diesel. They were made by a company called "Davis" i.i.r.c.
      It ended up a strong suggestion to replace the crank in an .049 also when converting to a diesel, because the factory crank was known to break from the increase in compression when used with the diesel head conversion. The aftermarket crank came out shortly after the head did.

      "Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not
      end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. This is not a diesel engine, this is a nitro engine. it is a carburetted two-stroke. Diesels rely on high pressure injection, atomisation of fuel and high cylinder compression ratios to achieve combustion.

    • @rcdieselrc
      @rcdieselrc  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Daniel Howe Thank you for your comment. It's called diesel and always has been in the modelling community. It is a carbureted compression ignition design burning kerosene and ether based fuel with no glow plug. These existed many years before glow engines. Today this type of engine is called homogeneous combustion compression ignition. The glow engine also falls under this category. Direct injection diesel are different.

      The key is compression ignition. The fuel is not really relevant as most any engine will run on almost any fuel with minor adjustments. In this case, model diesel engines use fuel that is suited to lower compression pressures and temperatures.

    That's pretty much how the one I had as a kid ran... 2 hrs of diddling around then it would run for oh 30 seconds, long enough to get to the plane controls, then die. Low fun factor. Interesting to see such a tiny engine run though.

  • @rcdieselrc
    @rcdieselrc  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is unburnt oil which is mixed into the fuel because it's a two stroke. It doesn't run hot enough to burn it.

    Model diesel engines use a special fuel containing ether at assist in starting and running at lower compression ratio that injected diesel.

    These were produced in the 1990's by Allen Engineering in the UK. They are not produced anymore and can only be found second hand. They show up on Ebay a few times a year. AE also made 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5cc engines in this style.

    compression generates the heat to ignite the fuel air mix. the fuel is not pure diesel fuel, its a blend of diesel + oil + either. some people don't use the oil they consider the diesel lubricant enough. the either thins out the diesel and lowers the ignition temp.

    Good to see a diesel that's not hyper-sensitive to compression screw and needle valve settings. BTW, why do we keep seeing the RC tag on what is obviously a Free Flight and Controline engine?

    • @rcdieselrc
      @rcdieselrc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobody outside the hobby knows what FF or CL is. So you use the RC tag which people generally understand as modeling related. The needle and venturi are replaced with ancient Super Tigre parts. The original didn't work at all.

    diesel runs without spark. this low compression proprieties self ignites the chamber. I think the part on top is intended to adjust the compression rate at current temperature of piston. diesel and two stroke engines can use less parts and be more cheap/easy to build

    Diesel is compression ignition. Compressing a gas increases it's temperature. In a diesel engine this temperature is high enough to ignite the fuel.

  • @rcdieselrc
    @rcdieselrc  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not an injected diesel. The air in the cylinder is already mixed with the fuel so when the heat of compression ignites the fuel it burns very quickly. Model engines dues to their small size allow very high RPM and still stay within the strengths of the materials and piston speed limitations.

    Fantastic.
    sounds like it is running rich though. When you restrict the fuel flow to kill the engine the RPM picks up before it stops.

    Compression ignition. As the piston compresses the air anf fuel in the cylinder it gets hotter, and hot enough to ignite the fuel.

  • @rcdieselrc
    @rcdieselrc  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, it spins correctly. I'm not sure why, but this is a common observation of the video. In the video I wind the prop against standard rotation on a starter spring. When I release the prop it spins in the normal direction. Pay attention to the direction the oil is being blown. It's being blown to the rear as expected.

  • @rcdieselrc
    @rcdieselrc  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Changing to a smaller fuel tubing results in greater pressure drop in the fuel line and reduces fuel flow. You accomplish this by turning in the needle.

  • @normdoty
    @normdoty 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    my friend there should be either available. look for engine spray starter. release the pressure and the liquid in the can is pure either.
    do NOT do this in doors, the fumes will build up and will kill when it gets concentrated and even worse the fumes are also EXPLOSIVE just the pilot from a stove, water heater, furnace, someone lighting up, or even turning on a wall switch. take extreme care with it and its use. it can be stored in a metal container with a screw on lid.
    be safe my friend.
