    I owned two of these muscle cars, not in the same years as shown but two. I had a 70 GTO with the 400ci engine, with an automatic trans and a 1966 Impala SS with a 396ci engine with a 4-speed trans, and it was a beast. I loved them both.

      Bingo! The concept of the True Muscle Car was demonstrated by the GTO. It was taking a large engine out of one of the big, family cars and putting it in an Intermediate two door car. The concept was to make an inexpensive but FAST car.
      The Roadrunner was the best response to the GTO out of all of the others.
      It was Spartan and came with vinyl bench seats and no power steering or power brakes unless you ordered them.
      It is not a credible Muscle Car list without a Roadrunner.

    Wow! Yes, who amongst us doesn't love dreaming about our favorite muscle cars? Heck we dream about a lot of the '60s & '70s cars we drove, built, and enjoyed. I was fortunate to rebuild a '66 GTO with my dad while in H.S., and had friends with some really great cars as well, my favorite a '71 cuda 440 w/pistol grip in violet (that kid was rich).
    I do wish terms of the day wouldn't have gotten so muddled over the years. I don't know where the "colt car" came from, we knew them as "pony cars", after the initial '65 mustang. Muscle cars were midsize cars with very few options except a big engine and appropriate drivetrain. Over time they all became "muscle cars" because pony just wasn't acceptable for 426 hemis, 440s, 429s, 428s, 427s, 421s etc.
    An older friend of our family owned a '68 shelby cobra gt500kr, omg what a cool kick ass car that was. At least I got to ride in it a couple times and just being around it was thrilling. If I might pass on what the gentleman owner told me, "this is not a mustang, it is a SHELBY COBRA GT500KR. Period!

    You guys mentioned the Trans Am but neglected to mention the Special Order Formula! I had a 70 Formula 400, it was much Lighter & Faster than the 455 TAs.
    With Optional Ram Air III 400cid 345hp with a Functional Double Snorkel Ram Air Induction Fiberglass hood, TH400 Auto, limited slip 12 bolt drive line! Slalom Racing Suspension (sway bars front & back) Variable Ratio Steering box in front of the axle for Quicker response!
    It'd do a 14.1sec 1/4, get deep in & out of corners Quickly stock!
    Of course mine wasn't stock, it produced about 470hp, B&M Auto & had taller gears runnin' mid to upper 12s in the 1/4! I also had to add ladder bars to keep the 👃 down!
    It'd run straight as an Arrow but could also make a left at 50mph!

    They have changed the definition of "Muscle Car" over the years.
    To those of us were of age to know what was going on back at that time, a "Muscle Car" was an Intermediate sized car with a large engine taken from one of the large Family cars, such as the GTO, Chevelle, Road Runner and so forth.
    The Mustang, the Camaro, the Challenger, the Cuda and the rest of the smaller cars were called "Pony Cars" after the trend setting Mustang.
    Now, some people are calling everything with a big engine a "Muscle Car". I guess they weren't alive when this was actually happening.

    • @betsyduane3461
      @betsyduane3461 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      GTO, Chevelle, Road Runner were midsize muscle cars and only slightly larger than the Mustang, the Camaro, Challenger, Cuda. Pony car was just a nickname, meant for long hood and short rear deck.
      A muscle car is defined as a powerful big block engine in a smaller body. You can have a small block muscle car but they need to be putting out some serious HP, like a 340 Cuda, or a BOSS 302 Mustang.
      1968 Charger = Length : 208 in
      1968 GTO = Length : 200.70 in

    • @zubitron5
      @zubitron5 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@betsyduane3461 The term "Pony Car" came from the other manufacturers building cars similar to the Mustang, the Mustang being a relatively small horse.
      Yes, today, a lot of people lump Pony Cars in with Muscle Cars, and some even include the Corvette, which is actually a Sports Car, not a Muscle Car in the original sense.
      I don't know whether or not you were alive, or if you recall it, but, back in the sixties when people talked about Muscle Cars they were talking about the Intermediate sized cars. Now days, they call any car with a high performance engine from those days a Muscle Car, but that was not what they did back in those days.
      Here, this is from the time. Note what the Mustang, the Camaro and the Barracuda are called in this article.
      www.motortrend.com/news/archive-mopar-ford-chevrolet/
      Classic Archive: Mopar vs. Ford vs. Chevy
      Three ragtop ponies from 1967 we'd all love to have
      The ponycar wars were heating up in 1967; the Plymouth Barracuda and Ford Mustang were each in their second iteration by that time, and Chevrolet finally jumped into the ponycar pool with the Camaro that same year. While the versions in this road-test photograph didn't have Hemis, 428 Cobra Jets, or big-block 396 V-8 engines, they performed well enough--perfect for that old-fashioned Sunday drive. Today, Plymouth and the Barracuda are gone, while the latter will be replaced in spirit by the soon-to-be reborn Dodge Challenger. The Chevrolet Camaro also awaits its renaissance. And the Ford Mustang never left--although that four-cylinder Mustang II of the mid-1970s had us wondering.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_car
      A relatively lightweight two-door body (opinions vary as to whether high-performance full-size cars, compacts, and pony cars qualify as muscle cars,[10] as it is sometimes claimed that only intermediate cars can be considered muscle cars)[2][4]
      An affordable price
      Being designed for straight-line drag racing, while remaining street legal.
      High-power pony cars are sometimes considered muscle cars, however personal luxury cars are often too expensive to be considered muscle cars.[2] Sports cars and sports sedans are not usually considered muscle cars, since they are generally associated with circuit racing rather than drag racing.[11] Muscle cars are an extension of the hot rodding philosophy of taking a small car and putting a large-displacement engine in it, for the purpose of increased straight-line speed.[11]

      All pony cars are muscle cars with the right engine, I know the name pony car comes from the Mustang I owned several. The Corvette is a sports car.
      Pony car is an American car classification for affordable, compact, highly styled coupés or convertibles with a "sporty" or performance-oriented image. Common characteristics include rear-wheel drive, a long hood, a short decklid, a wide range of options to individualize each car and use of mass-produced parts shared with other models.
