Toycat is the type of guy to use their boarding pass as a McDonald's napkin, give a whole hotel to reception, and the first thing they do when they're driving a rental car in France is listening to Dear Theodosia from Hamilton...truly a creature of all-time. If you thought airports in more than one country is interesting, there are also train stations in more than one country! Like Bayerisch Eisenstein/Železná Ruda-Alžbětín station, a station right on the border of Czechia and Germany. It was conceived in the 1870s as the shortest link between Prague and Munich, but because of the steep inclines and tight curves, especially on the Bohemian side, it never attained its intended importance. As it was on the Iron Curtain, Czechoslovaks were restricted from using it and a fence went right through the station building!
Another is Gare de Monaco-Monte Carlo station right on the Monaco-France border and is actually underground, meaning that while it's pretty cool that a microstate like Monaco has a station, it's really only half a station! Though it wasn't always like that, as the first station in the Principality, originally named Monaco (Gare de Monaco) was located in La Condamine in 1868. The following year, a second station named Monte Carlo was opened directly below the Monte Carlo Casino. The first station in La Condamine was later renamed Monaco-Monte-Carlo in the 1950s, after the building of a new tunnel bypassing the second station in Monte Carlo which was closed in 1965. The idea to relocate the railway and bypass Monte Carlo station was conceived by Rainier III to reclaim valuable land for development. In the early 1990s, it was again decided to reroute the railway, this time completely underground, and build a new station back closer to the center of Monaco. Construction commenced in 1993 and the new station opened in Ravin de Sainte-Dévote in 1999.

Geneva also has a train station in two countries: tracks 1 to 6 in Geneva Cornavin are in Switzerland, while tracks 7 and 8 are in France.
Why Campione d'Italia exists as an Italian enclave is very interesting. In the first century BC, the Romans founded the garrison town of Campilonum to protect their territories from Helvetii invasions. In 777, Toto of Campione, a local Lombard lord, left his inheritance to the archbishopric of Milan. Ownership was transferred to the abbey of Sant’Ambrogio. In 1512, the surrounding area of Ticino was transferred from the ownership of the bishop of Como to Switzerland by Pope Julius II, as thanks for the support in the War of the Holy League. However, the abbey maintained control over what is now Campione d'Italia. When Ticino chose to join the Swiss Confederation in 1798, the people of Campione chose to remain part of Lombardy. In 1800, Ticino proposed exchanging Indemini for Campione. In 1814 a referendum was held, and the residents of Campione opposed it.
In 1848, during the wars of Italian unification, Campione petitioned Switzerland for annexation, but this was rejected by the Swiss due to the Swiss desire for neutrality. After Italian unification, all land west of Lake Lugano and half of the lake were given to Switzerland so that Swiss trade and transport would not have to pass through Italy. The d'Italia was added to the name of Campione in the 1930s by Benito Mussolini to assert the enclave's Italian character. During World War II, the US Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the CIA) maintained a unit in Campione for operations in Italy as the Italian regime didn't have control over the enclave and the Swiss ignored it as long as the Americans kept a low profile! The Casinò di Campione was the largest employer in the municipality up until its closure in 2018 but has since reopened in 2022. It was founded in 1917, owned by the Italian government, and operated by the municipality. The casino was founded in 1917 as a site to gather information from foreign diplomats during the First World War.

I went to see a friend in Germany, so I had to take a flight to a Swiss city, and it landed on an airport in France. Basel in a nutshell.
When I came to the airport my friend told me he was waiting for me on the French side of the airport, so I left on that side. Then he called me and said turns out he was on the Swiss side, people just looked French because he saw someone smoking. So I had to walk back into the airport and figure out how to sneak into Switzerland while avoiding looking suspicious to customs. Ended up just fine, thanks to excellent European co-operation(I'm looking at you Britain).
I also spent some time in Basel some days afterwards as I have another friend there. My hotel was in Germany, I walked over the river to France to get breakfast, walked back to Germany to check out, walked to Switzerland to see a friend, then walked to France to have lunch, then walked back to Switzerland to take the train out. All while never leaving the city. Such a weird city.
The French side is also the only place in France you'll find French people who won't mind talking English to you. Which is a weird experience, friendly French people yet you're not in Canada. What a weird concept.
Not too long ago $20 would buy you enough crap there to feed a family of four.

well yes it is truly insane and remarkable (ive been following it since day 1), but there isnt really any more to cover to be honest. there are literally like 40 hours of content on their youtube channel going into the minute detail of the logistics and route etc.
there is a travel agency in germany which offers heavially discounted rail tickets as a connector to or from flights and so once when i was a child when we wanted to fly to egypt (this was before the arab spring), it was actually cheapest to take a night train from hamburg to basel, and fly from basel airport (which is technicly in france). never thought of the fact that we casualy went through 3 countries to get a cheaper flight

Really great video, I love when we get these travel videos. Your travel content is definitely some of the most unique. Also, as a huge geography and airports nerd I knew about most of this EXCEPT the french exit of Geneva airport, that was very new to me and really interesting... but I dont understand why you booked a rental car at the french side when you needed to drive back through switzerland again haha? I assume cheaper price I guess.

I went hiking during the summer on the ridge that you skied on (slightly west on the Brevent lift). Having ski lifts meant I only had to hike downhill… probably the prettiest and most fun hike i’ve ever done!
Very fun to see you going to such places I never went to xD as someone from France, I can confirm you that no one here cares or even knows about this border dispute - maybe the Italians care more than we do, we do indeed learn in school that "the tallest peak in Europe is found in France in the Alps" without mentionning the Italians, but I never heard anyone insisting more about that!

When I went to Sarandë in Albania, I had to fly to the Greek island of Corfu first before getting on a boat.
It’s actually possible to walk from Corfu airport to the port which takes about 35-40 minutes, followed by a 30 minute boat ride to Sarandë. In contrast, to travel from Tirana airport would have been a 3.5 hour drive.

There is Uzhurod airport, wich is in Ukraine but pretty much right on the Slovakian border. also: Vienna-Schweat and Bratislava-M.R. Sefanika, and Müllhouse Airport wich is Closer to Basel (and also invokes Freiberg am Breisgau for some reason).

My favorite border dispute is Bir Tawil between Egypt and Sudan, which is claimed by neither side. It's part of a larger dispute but for either side to claim it would undermine the basis for their claim of owning the Halaib Triangle which is what they're actually fighting over.

Not as exciting but this happens in the US with states sometimes. The best example is the Cincinnati airport being in Kentucky. Cincinnati is a city in Ohio, it borders Kentucky and some of it metro are is in Kentucky (and Indiana) but vastly most of it is in Ohio however the airport is in Kentucky. It's a common thing when people who don't know that fly in and see they're in Kentucky and get a small panic thinking they got on or booked the wrong flight. Anyway it's still recognized as the Cincinnati airport and services primarily southwest Ohio.

Next time, fly to Basel in the morning, get breakfast in a McDonalds in Basel, walk to germany to have lunch at the McDonalds in Weil am Rhein, then continue to France to the McDonalds close to the airport in St Louis for dinner and fly back home xD

A lot of Norwegian usually crosses the border to Sweden to buy groceries since it usally cheaper in Sweden.
I remember when I was in norway that a 0.5 liter coca cola zero in norway was like on avarge like 20-30% more expensive than in here Sweden.

Vatican City does have a mostly unused train station, feeling the need for a London to Vatican train. One way could be the Thomas More Limited, the other way could be the Henry VIII Express.

The French part of Geneva airport is actually really interesting and worth digging into more. Two reasons I know of, both having to do with cars, though I’m sure there are many more. First, though Switzerland is Schengen, it is not EU. So things like car insurance don’t automatically work. Second, Switzerland requires a use-pass to drive on motorways, which you don’t want to pay for just to get from airport to France.
