Love Opeth. My playlist is filled with them. Musically they are really great and I don’t mind the harsh vocals from time to time. There are so many really good bands that get overlooked by the mainstream. Thanks guys.

It really took me some time to appreciate the growls. After years of listening to their peak stuff with the juxtaposition of the two vocal styles, I can't go back now.

Amazing band! I think their second era is where to go next. I think their last album "In Cauda Venenum" (heavy but with all clean vocals), and "Pale Communion" (more 70's sounding) are the best two. And there's "Damnation", a chill and soft album that they released during their death metal era that is worth checking.

More Opeth! Anything from Blackwater Park or ghost reveries is amazing and I'm sure you will enjoy.

      What about Deliverance/Damnation.?
Also the reason you like all of those albums is because of Martin Lopez. He recorded Ghost Reveries before he left the band.
And he is the reason we love Blackwater Park. And Ghost of Perdition.
And this masterpiece that we all know as Deliverance. That half time china during the ending tho. Martin was the soul of the band. Axe doesn't even come close. There's a reason he doesn't play the ending of this track....because he can't.

This in my opinion is the best lineup. The drummer in this video is Martin Lopez, who has since moved on from Opeth and is an awesome drummer. I love the latino flair he brings in his cymbal work. I'm not a fan of his new band but in Opeth he was outstanding.
As for the mix of heavy and light, clean vocals and growls nobody does it better than Opeth. I am not a huge fan of growling vocals, but Mikael Akerfeldt is excellent with both vocal styles. I love how well he can mix both into one song. Shame he doesn't do any new music with the growls, they are pretty one dimensional now, although they do play the old songs live still with the growls.

Not really understanding the complaints about growled vocals. Its a tonality approach and change. By that logic one must really hate distortion on guitars. Variety is the spice. Read a lyric sheet if you cant understand.

I read somewhere old school Opeth fans dislike Steven Wilson's influence on the band, that he contributed to the decline in the growling vocals. I'm not a huge fan of the death growl so it's an improvement for me. Great song though guys, thanks for posting!
Speaking of SW, would you consider running another SW solo reaction by Dave for me? He just announced a new tour (European sadly) and album in 25, and there's a song I am absolutely dying to see you guys react to. It has Steven's original studio crew on it, Guthrie, Marco, Nick, and Adam, but unfortunately I can't find any pro shot footage of them playing it live all together other than a snippet from when they laid it all down in studio. There is footage of them performing it live without Marco and Guthrie (Craig Blundell and Alex Hutchings) if you guys think you would enjoy it more with visuals, but honestly I would tickled to hear your thoughts on either version. Glad Dave checked out Opeth. They did Death metally stuff earlier in their careers. I'm more partial to the clean vocal stuff they do. Definitely an extremely talented band. Their last few albums are the ones to get if Dave is into the music (they nearly abandoned the cookie monster vocals lately) Here's one for Dave to check with a really tight groove and nice crisp drumming. It's the band Rendezvous Point and this tune is Presence th-cam.com/video/Dx8nQuEZ2sA/w-d-xo.html

You should check out the damnation album. Zero growling. Also Heritage. If you like really intricate musical composition and progressive rock music, those two albums are for you. Heritage is more atmospheric and evil sounding. I started on their clean vocal music and needed more so I ended up giving their growling songs a go and they converted me. I get it now. I still dont like most growling music though. Mikael Akerfeldt's you can actually understand and have dynamics to it. Anyways, hope you give these guys another go. They have music for just about anyone. I couldn't think of a single person who wouldn't like Will O the Wisp by them.

Damnation, Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum I think are the albums WITHOUT any death metal growls if you like his cleans only. (sometimes called "Newpeth" while the older albums below are "Oldpeth")
Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms/Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, Watershed do have growls at various levels, but there's some songs without any on them.
There's probably "Opeth - No Growl" playlists out there if you want to look for it. Opeth's best emotional description is probably "Sorrow". The older ones mixed with "Anger".
That being said, Mikael's growls are actually a pretty good gateway into harsh vocals if you're new to it. His lyrics are actually still understandable when growling once you get used to it.

    • @Zhgarr
      @Zhgarr หลายเดือนก่อน

EDIT - If I'd have to recommend 1 album for the cleans, it's Damnation.
