In my opinion, The X-Men’s “God Loves, Man Kills” story was darker than the Hal Jordan’s descent into Parallax. But I’m surprised, nothing from The Authority or The Boys? They got some dark comics.
Obviously if you get obscure there will be darker comics, but Irredeemable and Incorruptible were pretty well known books, Y The Last Man is obvious, Preacher of course, and Garth Ennis' entire catalogue.
I'm reading Y The Last Man and I love it. It totally flips the script on the post apocalyptic genre and it has some nice social commentary told at a time where pc police weren't as prevalent.

Anyways, in the Moon Knight comic issue "Hit It". Moon Knight kills a teenager. He didn't wish to kill him, but the kid punch Moon Knight hard in the jar yelling "Hit me!" and Moon Knight breaks his neck with one punch. Also the crowd of people behind Moon Knight was cheering him on to kill the boy. The crowd wants the boy dead since the boy was having PTSD and beating random people in the crowd. He had PTSD since his father used to beat him and he learned that day in the news that his father just died. So he was heading to his father's funeral as the PTSD began.

That was the main reason why he had multiple disguises and couldn't be seen out in public as Marc Spector (unless on a mercenary or superhero mission). Frenchie couldn't go out in public either without a disguise. Also Moon Knight, Frenchie, Marlene, and Crawley always worked as a team to take down the bad guys. Moon Knight wasn't a solo hero unless the situation was dire. Meanwhile today's Moon Knight is some over the top crazy guy with multiple personality disorder and does BatMan things. The only writers who ever cared about Moon Knight was Doug Moench himself and Charlie Huston (who only intended to make a Moon Knight spinoff like "Frank Miller's Batman", but ended up creating the ground work for today's Crazy Moon Knight...... The very darkest superhero storyline IMHO would have to be Rick Vietch’s Heroica storyline and especially his comic series ‘The Bratpack’ which for me has never been equaled for a dark and bleak superhero saga.
I'm pretty sure you guys are wrong about the Watchmen/Charlton thing. Moore wanted to use *DC* characters (some of the analogues are pretty obvious to which characters) but instead he was remanded to using some of the Charlton characters specifically because they only were interested in certain ones, and not the entire line up of characters.
Could also add batman 666 where the Damian becomes the most cruel Batman selling his soul to the devil in exchange for immortality, he mined all of Gotham and killed many villains
TH-cam really needs to adjust their algorithms... nearly all of the suggested videos in the sidebar are for little kids doing toy reviews. Somehow the algorithm decided that "superhero" = material for toddlers, and completely ignored the "darkest" part.
Maximum carnage is the darkest comic story I have ever read. Carnage actually wins he burns New York to the ground. Spiderman loses and has to fight for the few that remain. Despite all his effort and even teaming up with Venom Spiderman lost. Heroes repeatedly get tortured and die on panel. It is just horrific.
The killing joke was only shocking because people love to believe evil could never go this far or beyond, so when we see it.. people are outraged by what they cannot or refuse to believe. When in reality, if such a person truely ever existed.. such methods would not be beyond their ability to commit.

"Watchmen", "Batman: The Killing Joke" and "The Dark Knight Returns" are equally AMAZING.
The three are excellent,but in my opinion Watchmen is the best of them. There is more character development., and better plot.
