The detail that got me to get this version over any of the other knives with similar features was the way the scale and bolsters fit together that wave is so cool

The Black Mirror is originally a Stedemon knife and design, Maxace just bought the license to have their name put on it. The Goliath Models have always been a great value for its size and materials, even the S90V bowie/ clipt point version was under $200 (might still be). Gotta respect Maxace for bringing both some of the wildest and also very reasonable pieces at a good price (for the most part).

This is the first time I'm realizing the blade in this version is different and not just a full flat grind like my 2.0. I dig it.

I bought the Carbon Fiber version with the Damascus Bolsters and the S90V blade. It's a really nice knife and sets a new standard for carrying a 'Pocket Sword'. I had to have the $200+ version just to get that big chunk of S90V blade! Thanks for the review MC!

Tl;dr: seems like this will have roughly the same end user performance as D2, primary advantage of SLD-Magic is ease of manufacturing.
Did a bit of Googling on SLD-Magic. The actual composition is not public, but Hitachi does compare it directly with SKD11 in their material sheets. SKD11's composition is known and properties written about -- and it seems to fall in the same bucket as "non-US D2", albeit with a lower Vanadium content, and supposedly a bit less wear resistance.
    So... what we do know:
    - Hitachi's referenced appropriate heat treat range for SLD-Magic = 60-62
    - Hitachi's referenced wear resistance for SLD-Magic vs SKD11 = roughly equal
    - Hitachi's toughness vs SKD11 = depends on HT, can be significantly higher IF tempered at a lower temp, idk what Maxace is doing
    - No reference to stainless properties, but given that it's intended as a replacement for tool / molds (but also references surface treatment adherence), likely not intended for usage where there is a focus on stainless properties
    - primary advantage from Hitachi's sheets seem to be focused on ease of machinability vs a slightly lower wear resistance analogies to d2.

I think Maxace got at least 2 OEM's they use. 1 is Stedemon. And I also think Stedemon makes a LOT of other Premium knives where the OEM is Secret or can't be mentioned. Stedemon has been around for a long time and can produce pieces on a level with Rike and other top Chinese manufacturers. Stedemon released the Black Mirror in January or February 2022, and Maxace bought the rights in June or July the same year. Considering the Black Mirror was the first Stedemon model in a long time. It's reasonable to assume that they are quite busy doing OEM work. They could also possibly also be using another Company name since it seems to be a trend that every Chinese knife OEM needs to have 2 or 3 sub brands. So hard to keep up with everything new popping up.

I think they should have named the Mamba, David because this is Goliath. The Mamba is exactly the same but has 9 cm blade and is smaller. I have this SLD-Magic steel in my OTF Neptune and it comes so sharp and solid that I can't complain.

I ordered the Micarta 1 the other week after your unboxing. So close to ordering the S90V the other week but figured I would wait and see how good it actually is. It said shipping from Hawthorn US but it's been on its way from DHL for almost 2 weeks. So makes me think it's on a boat from China.

I'm in about the same boat as you. I grabbed the SLD Magic San Mai one. Had to get it from their site because it was sold out everywhere. If I like this, I'll be picking up one of the K110 versions, as I think they look cooler.

Size is right, if it had a button, crossbar, or shark style lock, it'd be in my pocket right now. Also they should do an XL version.

Just a petty thing : Would the Coldsteel AD 10 not have been a better length /width comparison ❓

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  ปีที่แล้ว

Always better to use knives people are more likely to own. The AD 10 is a popular knife, but not as popular as most of my size comparison knives so it wouldn't be as helpful for as many people.
