I believe Backbreaker's claim to fame was it was the 1st football game to not have scripted tackle animations and player interaction. The physics engine handled it. It was more of a demo showing off the technology in fun ways. Shortly after this Madden added the same tech in their "Infinite Engine" where players would get near each other and suddenly ragdoll. But it's a prime example of why competition is good and EA shouldn't have exclusive rights.
... This game competed without the NFL license, you don't need the NFL license to make, distribute or sell a football game. Exclusive rights is dumb, yes, but it's 100% on 2k and other developers NOT making football games just because they don't have the nfl license. Make something. Also with how 2k has been the past few years with their sports games, uh... Yeah I doubt they'd bring any magic or noteworthy aspects into the football realm

Small history lesson: This game was released as a glorified tech demo for the new Euphoria/Morpheme engines that focused on realistic physics in the last console generation. It's physics engine would go on to be used most notably in GTA4 (and GTAV) after Rockstar was given an early build of this game as proof of concept. Rockstar may have even bought the company after or during the development of GTA4.
This game was made after GTA IV... they had the engine for free a long time before this game, rockstar liked the engine and bought them out after this released.

The physics are definitely better, the players will actually automatically reach for the endzone as well. It’s the euphoria physics engine which is also used by red dead redemption 2.

I remember playing it on my old 360 back in the day, but somehow it's not on the hard drive anymore and I never could figure out how to re-download it. Looking forward to playing this again. It was far from perfect but it did some things very well. It's definitely fun to play even with its flaws, more than I can say for Madden

This is up there as one of my top football games to play. In an era where football games with personality and creative freedom were coming to an end. This gem popped up and rocked my world. Game mechanics that were reminiscent of Skate, making successfully spinning around a defender or throwing an accurate pass feel almost more personal and rewarding. And although you couldn’t have as personalized of a custom player, it was largely made up for by being able to design a team from literal scratch: need a logo? Here’s a blank canvas, all the shapes you need, some stickers and general images and a creative mind. Not to mention the absolute brutality of the tackles from the rag doll physics. Just a great game really, if you give it the time, even if the creative elements don’t matter to you, it’s just a great and unique approach on a football game that I hope we’re able to see again someday.

The reason they don’t have a specific button for all the receivers is because it makes more realistic. You have to scan the field like an actual QB. I actually really liked this game and sure you suck at first but once you get the hang of it it’s actually really fun and refreshing change of pace from madden. I wish they would’ve made more of these games.
Thats not realistic at all... it takes fractions of a second to scan the field, tunnel vision on individual recievers is dumb as hell. The old nfl blitz on n64 had a better system for passing than this... you dont need controller input for what your eyes are doing.
Play with the BB all Stars. I'm actually in the game on that team. defensive end #78. I did a couple of tracks for this when it was in development. They ended up licensing the movement and collision tech to Rockstar games for Gta 4 & 5

Yardage: 1,091 passing yards, 850 rushing yards. Defensive: 21 sacks, 5 interceptions, 1 safety. Three of those interceptions became TDs. Top receiver, TE, having 20 receptions for 815 yards and 11 TD. Longest, 74 yards. Top rusher, WR had all 850 rushing yards, with 27 TD. Longest, 51 yards. Top defense, DE, 28 tackles, 11 sacks. No field goals. Scored on every drive. If you know how to line up your defensive line, you can control your man to completely take out the opposition.

Few things: 1. Holding left trigger (I think) when you're catching a pass will protect the ball and reduce the drops. 2. Run outside of the tackles. Inside runs suck because, as you mentioned, you go down with the slightest contact. Instead, do sweeps and counters and you can rack up the yards fairly easily. 3. Aim your kick off all the way to the left and all the way up. Then, kick it as soft as you can (flick the stick up and down very quickly). Quickly switch to the first guy you can (he'll be closest to the ball) and then target the guy waiting for the ball. Absolutely destroy this returner before he can catch it. Your team will recover it 8 times out of 10.

I think I'm one of the very few people who enjoyed these games. The camera angle kept you blind as it should. Being a QB and having to focus downfield was refreshing. And running the ball with a narrow FOV kept you honest during cut-backs.
Games don't have "shoulds." The paying customer can demand a game totally unrealistic and easy if they want. At least have options. That's why this game flopped like a concrete pancake. You don't dictate to the customer how a game should be played. Besides, anybody that wants perfect specificity and accuracy should go outside and play real football.

I think I'm one of the very few people who enjoyed these games. The camera angle kept you blind as it should. Being a QB and having to focus downfield was refreshing. And running the ball with a narrow FOV kept you honest during cut-backs.
Games don't have "shoulds." The paying customer can demand a game totally unrealistic and easy if they want. At least have options. That's why this game flopped like a concrete pancake. You don't dictate to the customer how a game should be played. Besides, anybody that wants perfect specificity and accuracy should go outside and play real football.
Loss? Haven't seen one of those since the pandas season of '78...

the camera angle was to simulate the vision the player would really have. that is why the QB has a blind side and you have to look at who you are throwing it too. it's zoomed in on your back cuz you can't see behind you. makes you feel like you are on the field. takes time to get use too but it was a good game.
