Great video as usual. Word of caution: make absolutely certain engine is cool before sticking the probe in. If you can't keep your hand on the head or block for more than a couple of seconds, it's still too hot. If your picture starts getting dark, cloudy, or distorted, it's too late.

I wonder if you could use this to inspect whether valves in a direct injection engine would need walnut blasting? Easier that taking the intake off and viewing the back of the valves. You'd have to turn the engine until the intake valves open, but would be a quick check.

Wow the borescope is awesome, sure has changed from the first one I bought years ago. Watched your unboxing video and wanted to say psoriatic arthritis sucks. I’m 60 and have fought it since I was in my teens. I am almost wheelchair bound now. A lot of my issues were also caused by the 30 years of doing what you do everyday. Watching your videos brings back lots of memories. I did driveability work most of my time working as a tech. I like the way you are involved with networking with other techs and sharing knowledge between each other. I was a very early member of iATN and learned a lot working with other techs and developed a lot of new ways to diagnose problems. I eventually got to the point where I couldn’t do the day to day stuff and went to work for ac delco hotline. Helping others fix issues over the phone was a challenge and was fun. Started teaching and now just piddle some while retired and soaking up sun in Myrtle Beach SC. I truly enjoy watching you and have great respect for your critical thinking skills and the way you approach the diagnostic process. Getting together with other techs and picking each other’s brains is great. Back in the day I went to a few iATN conventions and other get together like Jim Linder and others. The networking with others sure made me a better tech for sure. Keep up the good work.

Good find. One trick I learned years ago, pull plugs, put a spill free funnel on radiator or surge tank. Use a leak down tester hose connected to shop air and install in each cylinder. After air is turned on, rotate crank until the cylinder is at TDC and both valves are closed. Watch for bubbles in funnel at radiator/surge tank. Sometimes have to hold the piston up for a minute or so to show a leak.

If it's a tiny leak as in this case, cylinder pressure can actually seal the leak like a one way valve. That's why there's only a small amount of coolant loss. Good way to find/prove a bigger coolant loss though.

One of the guys in my shop drained the coolant before pressurizing the system, after claiming to know how the tool worked. No one said anything to him for about ten frantic minutes when he finally asked, "Is this thing broken?"
I pulled it from the radiator neck and showed him that it worked just fine when testing a cap. He put it back on the radiator and again began furiously pumping away. After a few minutes, one of the other guys told him that, if he kept that up, he would go blind.
The rest of us were quietly chuckling as he burned off every calorie he had consumed in the last three weeks.
After thirty minutes, I checked on him, and he had made it to five psi. He asked, "How far does it need to go?"
    I told him, "Fifteen psi."
    "Are you $h!++!ng me?"
    "Nope."
After nearly two hours (rear heater system), he made it. "What do I do now?"
I told him, "Check for leaks."
    "How?"
    "The pressure will drop."
After a while he came into the office and said, "It's down to thirteen."
I asked, "Where is it leaking?"
    "How can I tell?"
"Coolant will be weeping out where there is a leak."
    "There's no coolant in it."
"You don't say! We all knew that, and that is why it took two hours of your life to pump it up!"
    "Why didn't someone tell me?"
"Because you said that you knew how to use the tester. I will pay you for your time, but, in the future, if you don't know something, say so. This is one of the main ways mechanics get hurt. Now, fill it up with water and try again."

It was right up near the firewall but I was able to pull the dash loose and cram my arm in there to plug it in. Hey I'm not perfect but I did learn something that day. Now I usually make lil flags from bright green masking tape so I don't overlook Anything like that

Hi there, I have a 08 Honda PIlot. Misifres on cylinder 3,5&6 . It only does it on idle. Even at 1k rpm if you keep it, it won't misfire. Only on idle it does that. I just had the valves adjusted. Compression test and leak down came out fine. What could it be ?

Tungsten carbide wedding bands are electrically conductive. As a matter of fact, they can pass over 1000 Amperes.

This engine has the weirdest headgasket problem I witnessed. Out of no where I have seen 5 gone. Has the 2ZR-FE. 100k, 120k, 90k,122k,and 150k. I seen the headgasket being super thin.

I've never had much luck getting people to answer but I'm hoping that'll change: 2006 GMC 1500 SL, 244k. Start it up, tapping. Losing coolant faster than this lady is. Tapping stops or at least is not audible to me after a while. I was told to add K-Seal to stop the coolant leak and the tapping. From what I've read, this is a bad idea. So the question is this: I plan on keeping the truck until it disintegrates. Do the K-Seal, is this just a head gasket job or should I expect more?

On my head gasket failure, symptom was cooling system pressurized with cold start. No coolant loss, the expansion tank captured all pressurized loss.
Compression in #5 was 50 PSI less than the other 7. I rolled crank to #5 TDC and used the Compression tester to pressurize the combustion chamber. No bubbles from pressure cap until 340 PSI. Yes, I have air up to 4500 PSI..this is a diesel engine. The fire ring acts like a check valve when the composition portion of the gasket degrades.

Sad day. 3rd gen Prius is a notorious head gasket popper. No prior overheating or anything, just goes randomly. The other unfortunate one is the 4.0 V6 head gaskets will randomly go south and of course the infamous 2AZ-FE pulling the threads from the block and losing the HG between cylinder 2 and 3 with a coolant leak under the intake manifold.

Awesome cool video thumbs up. I have a question! What brand & model rear shock would you recommend for a 2020 Kia Forte LXS? This is a fairly new car and the rear shock is leaking. Was there a recall on this car? Would you please check it for me? Thank you. Stay well & safe.

Are you going to clean the EGR cooler and install an oil catch can? This is likely what caused the head gasket to fail, and it will likely fail again. I replaced the head gasket at 220,000 miles, and now have over 300,000 miles on it. Great car, but the guys still bust my balls for driving a Prius. I drive about 130 miles per day, so it is worth it. Original batteries, and getting about 41 MPG now... used to get 52 when it was new.

How much coolant leak would not be indicative necessarily of a head gasket issue? Have a 1.8L Toyota 1ZZ-FE here with some coolant loss but no codes. Not sure exactly how much leakage... noted some missing in the expansion tank over the course of a year.
What's the fix? New gasket and cylinder head resurfacing? Isn't there some goo that can be put in the coolant to stop the leaks?

Just had the exact same symptoms with my 2002 Tacoma 2.4. didn't even need the boroscope. just pulled the spark plugs after in cooled off and sat and there was a shinny lake on cylinder #3. rock auto $63 head gasket set with head bolts and 5 hours. she runs amazing now. thanks for your videos. Has taught me a much more fundamental approve to repairing cars. Dont just tear stuff all apart anymore.

It’s funny I just had a Prius in last week with the same exact failure and diagnosed the head gasket the same exact way. Cylinder 3 was missing only during startup, had one small shiny spot on the piston only visible with the borescope. I then pressurized the system and observed drips coming from the head gasket! Woohoo I’m starting to think like EricO!!

5:15 I was gonna say.. those model Prius are notorious for head gasket problems. U see how small it is, so lots of ppl try the gasket repair crap that can buy you a little time, but never a real fix. My gen 2 Prius thankfully doesn't have HG problems, but it's got plenty demons of its own. Knock on wood it's fine at the moment. Bad form by Toyota, anyhow, because that engine runs on Atkinson cycle so the combustion pressures are quite low. Makes no sense.

Is a 2013 Prius, 10 years old, worth this expensive fix for a little itty-bitty problem?
If you can sell it, you have defiantly found an actual problem.
My point is this fix is an expensive to cure that trivially small problem and the car's value is lower than would warrant this expenditure.

Had to upgrade from my Crap=On borescope to the Depstech dual camera so I could pinpoint an oil puddle in a ford V10 #4 cylinder, Leaking valve stem guide on the exhaust valve. Couldn't pinpoint it with engine hot so had to clean it out and wait till next morning and the money shot was a closed exhaust valve covered in oil.
