    The big loser this year has been Seiko. They are no longer the quintessential 'gateway drug' to watch collecting. Even die-hard fans are leaving them in droves over their limited lines and outrageously high prices (for what they are/offer) and there's no end in sight. I hope their gambit on moving a segment up (without really improving the value proposition) will pay for them long term, but I'm very doubtful...

      What annoys me on top of the rising price of Seiko is their movement timing is not great. I have a SPB149 which I find good looking but the timing is just so off. They just take the same meh calibers and stick them in all sorts of price tiers and you really have to pay a lot to move a better movement.

    About Chopard - while they have designed some good dressier pieces, a word about their microrotor movement : it's not all that fair to say it was "developped" by Chopard when really they just tweaked the old Universal Genève microrotor calibers once UG went bust (much like how Chronoswiss retooled everything they could from Enicar after they died) and in the previous generations it was very much for the worst as some brass ratchet wheels were "eaten" by steel claws in charge of the automatic winding transmission. Clever way to make sure the watch would break every five years or so and would need to be sent back to the factory since Chopard won't provide spare parts to third-party repairmen.
    Been there.
    Not fun seeing that you either have to send wherever when you are perfectly capable of doing everything else in the watch or find a way to rebuild an entire ratchet wheel.
    At least the current generation made that wheel out of steel, as it should have been from the start.

    Congratulations to Omega/Swatch for completely destroying my desire to purchase a Speedmaster. And they did so with their display of complete and utter arrogance/incompetence regarding the release of the MoonSwatch.
    Omega and their apologists went to great lengths to dish all over homage brands like Pagani Design, and then go and release their own "homage" swatch, that is worse in every single metric than the watch they poop all over.
    And to add insult to injury, they artificially limited supply of their happy meal toy, and allowed the secondary watch market to buy all the available watches and resell them at outrageous markup.
    And to really pour salt into our wounds they then artificially create rare "moonshine" additions to simply fuel the fire, instead of fixing the supply chain issues for good, and making the MoonSwatches widely available and online.
    One watch reviewer said that you could tell the difference between a real MoonSwatch and a fake AliBaba one, is by the fact that the fake is better built.
    That's pretty vicious, and true.

    • @shaverray4462
      @shaverray4462 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The counterpoint to your comment is that the Moonswatch has been, and continues to be, a huge sales success. It’s also resulted in a significant and sustained increase in sales of the Speedmaster itself. The punters have voted with their wallets.

    • @williamthomas6106
      @williamthomas6106 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaverray4462 And the counterpoint to that, is that despite being a huge sales success, Omega/Swatch has demonstrated their utter contempt for their customers. They provided a cheaply made, joke of a watch and overcharged for it. They sold a ton, and eroded respect for their brand almost universally. There are almost no watch reviewers on TH-cam that can objectively say that the MoonSwatch is a "great" watch, let alone a "good" one.
      Compare that to Tissot, which produced the PRX, that provides surprising value for money. A watch that says you don't have to spend $1000's of dollars for a quality Swiss Made watch. They offered both a Mechanical and Quartz version. The priced both appropriately. Tissot didn't insult it's customers by manufacturing a toy and charging hundreds of dollars for it, And in doing so, gained an enormous following. I am not thrilled with the "digital" PRX, but hey. I don't have to buy one. And still, you can't argue that the digital PRX isn't well constructed. It does have that going for it.
      Admittedly Omega/Swatch is a sales success, and perhaps that's a reflection of the Lemming type mentality of a large swath of watch collectors.
      I'm happy they increased their bottom line.
      All this release did for me is convince me that I want nothing to do with either company. And while a Speedy was my grail watch, I have no interest in one at all now.

    One thing you might want to do better next time: Ask your guests to not use the microphone of the Airpods but use any different microphone to not have the low-quality mono sound. Even just using the built-in laptop microphone will sound way better!
    The fact that Airpods or generally almost all bluetooth headsets switch back to the lower-quality audio profiles is appalling!

    Rolex are by a country mile the big watch winners for 2023 as Justin said. The fact that they make money when any bucherer shop sells any watch like Longines, omega, Cartier or anyone else, is such a good move for them.

    Interesting about Breguet, it’s not like the business has existed in perpetuity since the great man founded the business. It closed down and the Swiss bought it out years later for the name and IP. It’s cynical marketing, not long-standing tradition.

    • @shaverray4462
      @shaverray4462 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not actually correct. Indeed after its direct family ownership Breguet was active and in the hands of the Brown family (not Swiss) for a century from 1870 to 1970 before it was bought by Chaumet (French). After that it was owned by Investcorp before being bought by the Swatch Group in 1999. Most historical brands change hands over time, there’s nothing cynical about it.
