Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (the Japanese release of this game) uses a password system that produces haiku: 5 characters, 7 characters, 5 characters. They're usually nonsensical, but much easier to jot down. You could probably imagine Japanese children having fun trying to piece together some legibility from some passwords or even trying some of their favorite haiku as passwords to see what happens. It's a really neat touch that unfortunately didn't transfer over very well.
If we want to know why the Japanese thought Americans would prefer “dumbed down” versions of Nintendo games, just remember… Mario’s Lost Levels was supposed to be Super Mario 2…
This is my favorite game on the NES. Absolute classic and if you are a collector it needs to be in your NES collection. Have a good xmas and Skol Vikes!
What blows my mind every time I play this game is while I think the Yakuza series has pretty dynamic gameplay for a beat em up. This game honestly doesn't lack too far behind for being nearly 30 years old.
Not to mention the games awesome physics, that were pretty damn rare in games back in the day. You could throw a wheel, run up to it and jump on it, then ride it down the street like a mad man! Or take a pipe, toss it, and hit a trash can that will roll into the enemy. This and all those reasons you mentioned above is exactly why to this day, River City Ransom is my favorite NES game and beat em up of all time. Hell, so much so I even helped backed the official sequel to it, "River City Underground" a few years ago :). As always, great video Drunk, thanks for the fond memories and happy holidays!
This game may be not on the NES Classic but this game was on the Famicom Mini (the Japanese version) though. I remember playing the Japanese version of this back in 2005 as a 4 in 1 bootleg Famicom cart, and years later I played the GBA remake. This game is known as Downtown Nekketu Monogatari in Japan.
Oh, the Famicom Mini plug-and-play console! At first, I thought you were referring to the "Famicom Mini" lineup of ports for the Game Boy Advance! (These are known as "Classic NES Series" in North America, and as "NES Classics" in Europe and Australia.) I am aware that DNM/RCR were remade for Game Boy Advance as Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari EX/River City Ransom EX, respectively. (Shame there was no Street Gangs EX; publishers shaft the PAL markets all too frequently...)
there's a japan only sequel/spinoff to this for Famicom called Downtown Special where you play as Kunio (alex) playing as a samurai in a school play. it has a big enhancement to the progression system and combat. it's a shame we never got it, but there's a translation patch out so if you like RCR you should do yourself a favor and check it out!!
This is basically a double dragon RPG. I loved grinding and leveling up my character, then seeing all the cool things I could buy. Not until Mystical Ninja have I had more fun roaming about beating things up and getting side tracked spending my money on cool stuff to do. Like Battle of Olympus, I love its open world feel. You really feel like you are exploring and discovering new places.

It's odd how Technos is basically the only company from the NES era to hit on the idea of giving all their games a consistent look, even to the point of carrying the look across platforms (like Arcade versions). It made their games SO easy to recognize.
I just wanted to point out that you actually missed one remake: _River City: Rival Showdown_ for the Nintendo 3DS, released Stateside in 2017. It is a *fantastic* reimagining of the original game, with a lot of new content, and still the same goofy humour that the original is known for. And hey, if you have a buddy with a cartridge, then it's actually two players! It's definitely an overlooked gem in a year filled to the brim with great games, and it deserves a lot more love than it's getting.
I.m.o., best two-player co-op game on the system and up there w/ Super Mario Bros. 3 for best two-player game overall (on said system), so that alone would put it in my top 10. Had a ton of fun w/ this one growing up w/ my cousin.
I frickin' LOVED this game as a kid. This and the tournament fighting one were you choose a partner and fight other two. The Kunio Kun series is just amazing
My friend and I LOVED this game as 11 year olds. Rented it at a video store and boy were we surprised! Some of the things for sale are pretty dang hilarious. Thanks for the great review! I want to go back and play it again thanks to you. That music still gets stuck in my head...
This is a game that I’ve never actually “owned” (unless you count Wii virtual console) but have played and played off and on since it was new. I used to rent it once in a while, back when renting NES games was a thing you could do. Totally agree with your review! This is one of THE most nostalgic games for me!
My favorite memory of this game is when I was playing it on the Wii Console with a friend from college. We get to the final boss and find out that we can still move around and attack while he’s monologuing, so we immediately rush him and then started air juggling him between us with sticks like he’s a baseball piñata. It was such a satisfying beatdown and an excellent way to end the game.
I was one of those suckers who wrote the passwords down and couldn’t read my own handwriting! Thanks for the tip SNES Drunk-take a screen shot/photo from your phone! Great video review to one of the most annoying but fun beat em ups!
The only issue there is with the AI is that they can’t figure out how to jump levels, but then suddenly and without warning, they do start moving, you hear a pair of BOOMF sounds and suddenly you’re being tag teamed by Spiff and Chuck. They knock you between them with alternating fist punches, you have no chance to relax. Chuck aims an uppercut at you, propelling you into the gravel construction pit. Yeah I have fond memories of this game lol
The kunio series is legendary with how much different little things they did. Part of it reminds me of mario with how they even have their own sports games with wacky elements, and the best part in that being that you can beat the crap out of the other team. It really felt like the game even had some kind of influence from Yu Yu Hakusho if Yusuke and Kuwabara stayed in the school setting, and Ranma with the idea of anything goes martial arts implemented into the different games. I still remember doing a thunder kick in the soccer game while jumping high in the air to kick the ball before it hit the goalie smack dab in the face. Very satisfying.
Hopping in the sauna and bareassing people was hilarious as a kid. I remember finding the hidden secret shop in the tunnel and my brother didn't believe me about the items in there. The look on his face was classic when I showed him. Great game. Great memories
Psycho Machinery final fight came out right away on the snes. I do remember that when if first came out when I was just a wee lad. my guess is that the hardware was too new and Capcom had the pressure to release the game so instead of 2 player they had to make due with their limited time to learn to program for the new hardware. it was fun, but it reminded me of double dragon for the nes. a huge fail.
@@ThetaReactor GBA can be justified because of being a portable system somehow, I don't see it necessary, the GBA was about single player to me, TBH. On a home console it's different, SNES got serious problems and limitations porting console games (being Turtles in Time and Sunset Riders the only exceptions I can recall... Because fucking Konami back then knew how to do the real thing). Capcom simply fucked up the port, proof is FFight 2 and 3 were way better, and with 2 players mode included.
@@PsychomachineryEBM The GBA thing might be excusable if not for the same developer releasing a Double Dragon port, at the same time, which did feature 2P link cable support.
Next to the Metal Slug series, River City Ransom is one of my all time favorite games. I still have my copy in storage. I wish they would bring back Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I loved that game because it reminded me so much of River City Ransom.
Back in the NES days we had VCRs. So the trick on these long password games was to record a few seconds of the password screen. Then later on just pause it on that part of the recording and flip back-and-forth from the video and the game screen.
I remember playing this game after experiencing the SNES library. I didn't like it back then, part of it was that I never liked those scrolling brawler type of games. I didn't like it, but played it over and over again, so it is not a bad game, especially with the experience of SNES games I had then. Thinking back and watching your review, I just under appreciated the game and looked at it with one eye closed.
I remember this game growing up and the charm and appeal its style had. I also remember long bafter it's release someone using the graphics from this game to make an flash animated music video for the Daft Punk song Harder Better Faster Stronger
Have to say hands down my favorite NES game. One of my brother's friends gave him a stack of games when I was a kid and this one was among them. Even if I didn't know what to do at the time, it became an instant classic for me :D
I liked this game as a really young kid. I loved the RPG elements and always liked beat 'em ups, and this one was easy enough to beat even as a child. River City Ransom EX for GBA is really good too.
My favorite incarnation so far is River City Ransom: Tokyo Rumble. Which is a psuedo sequel/remake on the 3DS. It even came with a Kunio Kun keychain which I display proudly.
Wait a second...all this time I could have avoided the River City Ransom block-offs simply by switching from kick to punch or vice versa? I suppose that's what I get for always choosing Dragon Feet. I need to try this, I can't believe this never occurred to me...I wonder if that's also the case for River City Ransom: Historical Period Drama?
This and Super Dodgeball were my introduction to the Kunio series as a kid (though I didn't know what Kunio was at the time). Always wished that more of these games came to the West.
Since this video's release there are now more ways to play RCR either in emulated form or remakes. My personal favorite is the 3DS remake River City Tokyo Rumble because it also retains the Kunio-kun theming but in English. There is also a full blow sequel Rival Showdown.
I loved the soccer game in the series on the gameboy. The mix of side scrolling beat em up and soccer rocked. Hope you do reviews of the sequel on the SNES.
I played crash in the boys Street challenge endlessly with my brother when I was a kid. I wanted the ice challenge so bad which never came. I just wanted more and I never knew about this until recently. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

I played this game and beat it (novice level) some days ago, under the title of Street Gangs, since I own a PAL NES. It's certainly an original and unique game, but I wouldn't say it's top 15 material. Maybe top 50. It's really short actually, and grinding is the only thing that makes it seem longer. The soundtrack is great, though
Loved beating baddies up for money, & using it to buy food & weapons... a decade(?) before GTA. Insta hack added for my NES Classic. Definitely in beat'em up class with Double Dragon II & TMNT III.
