Given this trend of interviewing my favorite RPG youtubers, I'm guessing the next interview will be with Seth Skorkowsky lol
Yes please! Seth and Matt Colville are my favorite RPG-tubers and I'd love to see Trevor interview them
Sorry if this comes accross as pedantic, but a d20 is not a dodecahedron, a d12 is. A d20 is an icosahedron.
I would LOVE to see the two of you guys do this again! Such chemistry. It was like watching two old friends talk about their favorite hobby.
GenCon 2023 will go down in history as the event that brought all my favorite RPG TH-camrs together. I'm loving what's coming out of that.
Awesome! Love these interviews!
PS: Trevor, you always have amazing audio. Mind sharing your signal path?
PPS: Any chance of more Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay on your channel? I love that system and setting
My parents also disliked the idea of D&D so my first games were Star Frontiers, Top Secret, and Boot Hill. Those games I could sell my parents on because I told them it was just playing out Star Trek, James Bond, and Bonanza. I didn't get around to D&D till later, and it has never been my go-to game.
33:30 "Game telling" !! I really like that expression :)
I loved this interview. You two have a great chemistry. It felt like having (or watching) a conversation among friends. So, Trevor, please bring him on the channel another time. That was great.
And I'm no mathmatician, but I'm a math enthusiast. I have notebooks full of complicated equations, and calculus, formulas, and I also have this split second hickup when I roll 3d6. 😅 I think it's because summing 2d6 is easy, but to sum 3d6 or more, we have to decide which shortcut to take, because we have more alternative ways to sum them. Anyways.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who doesn't read anymore. Dang it. I used to read 1 book/week when I was younger. And I believe that's another reason OSR is gaining momentum lately. Most OSR systems are tiny and light compared to the behemoth that DnD is.
I've noticed the same thing with 2d6 vs. 3d6. I played the Dragon Age TTRPG and Fantasy AGE a bit and found that although I enjoy rolling 3d6, there is that mental hiccup to determining your result, especially if there is another step like checking if any of your dice are doubles as in the AGE system. It's not a deal breaker for me, but it is definitely something that happens.
You have no idea guys how i like you! Its awesome to see you on one screen. Alongside Ben, Hank and Dave you two are the top five ♡
Cheers Guys. I really enjoyed your discussion.
Aww it ticklesme that your first book was the SMRPG, I still have my copy from the early 2000s and think on it fondly.
Great talk!
FATE Core is definitely one of those games that suffers from adhering so strongly to its lexicon and to forcing the use of Fate Points just to make use of physical elements in a scene. Its best iteration, in that regard, is FATE Accelerated, because with a smaller page count, you put your foot in your mouth less often! (That, and approaches are more innovative than skills.)
These interviews are great! I love that you focus on game mechanics and game comparisons. The more-personal / backstory parts of these interviews are much less interesting to me. I watch these videos at double speed with a pen and paper to take Notes.
Always nice to see channels collide.
Great interview, keep them coming mate!
Thank you for the interesting interview, Trevor!
I'm also beginning to feel that system doesn't matter, primarily because I play solo, you just use Oracles to build the story and system maybe doesn't matter. But yeah, I agree that it's actually matter a lot. I just have to try a lots of system.
And I also found out about OSR and NSR scene from Dungeon Masterpiece & Bob World Builder's videos about Cairn & running them. It introduced me to others like Mausritter, Knave, etc and I realize that, yeah, all the supplements for these games are interchangeable. How interesting! But NGL, once I tried to get even more creative (or maybe not), thinking about running the Lost Mine of Phandelver or Curse of Strahd modules solo... With Ironsworn! Hahaha. But then when I thought about putting it on-air on TH-cam makes me wonder if I'm gonna get copyright strike or not (small channel here, every views, likes and subs counts).
But, yeah, this have been a fun interview! I just feel that it's too soon to come to an end. And also as a weeb (anime enthusiast) Baron got me interested on that particular Sailormoon RPG. There's some Japanese made system that are interesting to read like Sword World 2.5, Ryuutama or Konosuba RPG but never heard of that Sailormoon one. Have to check them up!
But you know, you guys mentioned the conversation about actual play videos like you dropped a bomb😂😂, I'm curious to hear that so please tell us about it!
Really, really great interview. Glad someone else feels the same way about the “feel” of 2d6 vs. 1d20, both in terms of gameplay and in your hand. Please have more of you two, systems discussions and game philosophy, particularly ones that are not DND I’m absolutely interested in. Trevor, to your point, your Five Parsecs campaign is one of the best ‘TV Show’ like things I’ve ever watched, though your Ironsworn campaign is better than most things on Netflix. Thanks for all you do.
Mammoth tusk d6s in the MM&D shop when?
Yep, exactly. I'll appreciate that DnD introduced me into the hobby back in 1978. But even back then after a few months of play many of us were thinking that there had to be something better. So RuneQuest, Traveller etc quickly became favorites. Later on as other systems came out we migrated to those, RoleMaster/MERP, Palladium Fantasy, GURPS, Call of Cthulhu etc etc. Systems that were more robust and and frankly more fun.
I will say this though, that DnD 5e is the best version of DnD that I'd seen over all of the various editions all the way back to the start. Except for one aspect, I'll never love Vancian magic. I think that's where DCC rpg and now ShadowDark rpg are superior by getting away from Vancian magic. As an aside, I'm another system person. I love getting into the mechanics of the system. I'm also amused that like you that I have big issues with Fate.
"Its like reading Hegel! Its so poorly written and yet so profound." Best description of a TRPG that I've ever heard LOL
I follow both of y'all!
TH-cam University gold. These two know the answer, but they forget to re-state the question. Maybe on the next interview 🤔
Definitely agree that these interviews are great.
I'm not that familiar with OSR - I'd be right in thinking that Odd-like NSR would be Mausritter's branch? That's definitely more my speed than most OSR I've glanced at (though mainly because 'mice going on adventures' is more generally appealing to me than the generic fantasy most OSR seem to fall into from the outside looking in) - Not knocking the rest, would play if asked, just... That's the OSR game that would have me excited to play if the opportunity presented itself.
First!
Keep these interviews coming Trevor
I SECOND this notion. Get it? Second?
3rd it
FATE is great...
if you like it.
I also try it with my group. I was super hyped, but they were not.
So, it was not that good... if the players (and the GM) do not buy the idea of games like FATE or the PbtA games, probraly it will go sour.
22:45 Hearing this part was heartbreaking. That player not only was flummoxed about being told to describe their action, they told the GM (Trevor) to describe the action and "to do his damn job."
Even when I first started playing TTRPGs back in '96, my GM and I went about how our actions played out based on the dice roll. We were also really into anime at the time (the Golden Age of Anime and all that) and never dealt with old-school D&D culture so perhaps it's a cultural thing.
I think the point was that the system produced a situation which was blatantly ridiculous and didn’t make any logical sense, not that they were flummoxed at the idea of describing something.
@@Pneumanon Going back around 15 seconds prior to that timestamp brought your point into perspective.
23:10 Yes, FATE, and others... they claim to be RPGs but they are more "Storygames", as they often set the players in the mood (or role) of a "screenwriter" (or storyteller), breaking his role as a player, taking away (for a moment) his role as a character
real problem with fate is u need a tabletop is atune with the game and it ask for us . and i discover that is better with new players than old ones, for them is very dificult.
Troll dads, changing people's lives since time immemorial.
Someone should make a game with Fudge Dice that doesn't adhere to always using 4 dice.
I would love to hear your opinions on Actual Plays. As most Actual Plays, aren't.
Please review The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth 1e.
How did fate make the 3 npcs die with a single throw?
We talking to dnd guys now? Also, the beard is still short. 😂
... but i DO want to hear your take on critical role and actual plays!! D:
I remember buying some of the FATE books used and at a cheap price. I'd heard some people say good things about the system. I didn't keep the books for more than a week before I unloaded them. I knew what my players would think if I tried to unleash that upon them (and I would have felt the same, lol). Could not get rid of those books fast enough, lol.
Most controversial moment in this video? That teabag in Baron' cup. No! Simply no!
duodecahedron is a d12
icosahedron is a d20 🤓😄
What’s funny is-me, my brothers, and all our friends…played D&D BECAUSE we thought it was evil back in the satanic panic days! Haha. Heavy Metal, Fantasy ttrpgs, and horror movies. The unholy trifecta! And we’re still the same today.
