Pro tip. If you want more time in the morning, it simply means going to bed earlier. You shouldn't cut down on your sleep. The iPhone alarm clock is an excellent reminder of this.
Last year, I finally decided to quit other people's expectations. I'm self-employed now, so I start my day at 9pm, work for 4 hours, sleep for 8, and then work for my next 4. Splitting 5 work days into 10 half days has been hugely helpful, since I just fit tasks into atomic units of 4 hours. I get to be a night owl (which is naturally better for me), and I get to wake up when I'm fully rested with a task ready for me. The hardest part about finding my routine was slowly learning that I can throw away other people's advice when it holds me back.
Awesome tips! I've been doing the glass of water every morning for awhile now and it literally revives me. It's crazy how great it makes me feel. One thing I've found to really help me focus and to counter burnout is to work using the Pomodoro Technique. You set a timer for 25 min and in that time you completely focus on what you're working on. Then a 5 min break to get up, stretch, bathroom, etc. Repeat. Making sure to stand and stretch a bit after each work session has done wonders for my legs and back haha. I definitely think this is more applicable to longer time blocks, like for weekends tho.
Amazing video, I always found that waking up by myself let's me jump right into what I want to do with a lot more energy compared to when I was woken up by an alarm to go to university or work.
I was super inspired by this and i plan to start a new routine tomorrow!!!!!! hopefully it sticks haha, but i do notice my mental health is loads better when i can do something creative each day
Can confirm this worked for me a few summers ago, and I was able to rise at 6 every morning. Eventually I didn't even need an alarm anymore, I was simply able to wake up at that time naturally. Unfortunately, a variety of factors caused me to fall out of that routine, but I'm really wanting to get back at it. That summer was seriously the best I had ever felt.
Perfect timing. I have been having some late nights due to work, and i end up waking up just before going to work and i am thinking about creating a new morning routine!
Just started a really demanding full time job and it's been pretty demotivating to watch myself completely lose energy for my other hobbies and commitments. Maybe trying something like this will help me find a good balance. Thanks and merry christmas!
The more you remove friction from the necessities of life, the more capacity you have to contend with the intensity of deep work. Similarly, the more orderly your expected routine, the greater your excess capacity to deal with chaos & unpredictability. Gamedev often swings between routine grind, chaos, & intense focus. I used to dislike the grind, but my problem was a lack of systems to remove the friction from the grind... now I do my best to convert as much of the chaos & frustration into easy, low friction grinding by imposing order on it. That's where the secret to productivity is, making it easy & almost mindless to get a lot of valuable work done. This also keeps your mind free & relatively untaxed to contemplate deeper insights about the nature of design.
I just had a burn out after the finals last week so today I decided to wake up at 4am and bike throughout the city :) very unusual but honestly today was the most productive days. ever.
I really love the idea to wake up if we want to, not if we need to. Unfortunately this does not work for me, because I have a 18-month old son that wakes up the instant me or my wife leave the bed. So there is an immediate responsibility to take care of him and no time for personal goals. I hope it will get better in a few months.
@@DevDuck I was gonna say the same as julkip, with kids, your theory kinda falls to pieces. Not that it isn't valid but if you have factors beyond your control, it's difficult to work around.
I was expecting you to conclude on how to well prepare in the evening for the next morning. You did tell a lot of usefull tips but a dedicated section of the video to that point would have been good I think
I have the privilege of being self-employed, working from home, and I have educated my clients well. They don't expect me to be available before ~11 am. I don't use alarms, I just wake up when I wake up, which is usually some time between 9 and 10. Then I may lie in bed and browse the news or something for 15-20-30 minutes, waking up slowly. And then I'm ready to get up and get going. But yeah, I am fortunate to be in a position that allows me to do that. And of course also fortunate to not have kids, but that's a very deliberate choice. A highly recommended one 😄
What about timestamp for getting to sleep? 🤔 Main problem for me that after all scheduled work during the day I want to spend time with my girlfriend and play some game or watch something and ending up going to sleep at midnight at best. Your advice on the glass of water is on point though! Very true ) Thanks mate, keep up.
Probably could have mentioned that - you definitely have to get to sleep on time. ~7 hours is right for me, so I go to bed around 9:30 and wake up at 5:00.
Don't get me wrong, but isn't it like the 3rd video about 'ideal morning rutine' on this channel? I'm starting to feel that wierd vibe of other channels that post nothing but 'sleep more, read books, do sports'-talks and other pseudomotivational stuff simply because that kind of content requires little to no effort and still gathers a lot of clicks. Just to make things clear, should we expect videos about gamedev and things that are directly related to it, that made this channel so unique and interesting?
I appreciate the feedback! Yes, this channel will always be centered on game dev. From time to time, especially when a particular topic is front of mind for me, I like to try making a video about it and see how it does. In this case I've been working to crack down on my own routine to combat some stress around some other non-game-dev projects, so this felt like something fun to make. I do appreciate hearing how you all feel about this content. I will adjust accordingly!
@@DevDuck I actually like the routine videos a lot, I find them super helpful and practical, and different from any of the other videos on the internet.. I find them really practical and better than these "pseudomotivational stuff" that is everywhere on the internet :)
It seems silly to me that Dinks have trouble finding time for self-care or self improvement. Stick to game logs. Anyone with any real responsibility will be insulted by this advice from the uninitiated.
Get off your high horse! I have a spouse, kids, 2 jobs AND I still do what he's suggesting; I splash cold water on my face and prefer tea or OJ. I always get up early to work out at 5:30am and do something for myself before getting kids to school and work.

Works as long as you don't have kids, let me tell you.
At least my child is the most difficult variable in my time management :)
Just sleep 7 to 8 hours
frick u i’ll sleep whenever i want

That's the key right there: Wake up because you WANT to, not because you HAVE to! Great video!

It makes a surprising difference!

Lol, the dog thought it was food and stolen a sock 😅😂
I could buy him every toy in the world and he would still prefer socks

hahaha the puppy stealing the sock has to be the funniest thing ever :)
Thank you, at these times I feel no motivation to do anything at all. Maybe I should try your method, hope it will work for me too.
Good video. Another idea is to change what your alarm is for. Make an alarm to go to sleep, and not an alarm to wake up.
Great callout. The Sleep app on iOS does this for you, reminding you when you should be winding down based on your desired sleep schedule.
100%. I wake up several hours before work. Nothing better than waking up for myself.
