Where's the Best Country for Expats to Retire? Could you live in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India?

  • I'm heading to Fort Kochi where I've stayed before. I hadn't intended on coming here on this trip. I’d envisaged just returning to the places I’ve previously stayed and love such as Varkala in Kerala and Agonda in Goa. But having spent two weeks in in Varkala taking a train from Kerala to would take 17 hours, so I’d taken a four hour train journey the previous day to Ernakulam, and was now on my way in a Grab to stay in Fort Kochi for a few days before taking a hour flight to Goa instead.
Having recently watched the Real Marigold Hotel Reality Documentary Series about British retirees deliberating on choosing Kerala as a retirement destination, with Series 2 set in Fort Kochi, I decided to spend a few days here. I’ve visited Fort Kochi a few times over the past 35 years, but I returned there with this question in mind: Could I retire here?
I now have a 5 year India e-visa allowing me to stay for 180 days per calendar year. How wonderful is that? India finally became open to non-vaccinated tourists in November 2022, but I haven't been able to return to this magical country until a year later.

Kerala is the best place to retire in India. You don't need to spend $400 a day though. India does have a waste problem but Kerala is better on that by Indian standards but it could get better

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was a nice movie. But who on earth would pay $400 a night to stay there?! 😆

Thank you for the video. I'm an Indian living in US and hope to slowdown my pace by living in such a place. Looking at the people they look chill. Do you feel welcomed and made to feel at home?

India seems like a nice place retire but its simply impossible. You can only get a 180 day tourist visa then you must leave for 60 days.
.... unless you marry in ....

Three countries I would consider retiring to would be Thailand, Vietnam and Columbia. I was in the Philippines for 1.5 years but unfortunately it was extremley discombobulated for my needs..

Yes thank you for your videos, are you able to give a rough monthly budget for a life that you lead travelling

I retired at 60 , 11 years ago, and have been traveling about 9 months a year ever since.
I'd say nowadays, you should have at least $2,500 a month coming in and preferably $3,500 +++
You need to SLOW travel and be in less costly Countries.

Kochi looks a nice place Philip. Would you ever consider India as a permanent/main country to live?

Good question Tony! I've got a 5 year visa whereby I can stay for 180 days per year. I love India, but the constant noise irritates me and there's no getting away from it. Ban the horn and I might reconsider!

I am in the USA and think the USA may the best country for me to retire. If I retire to a foreign country, I am not a citizen. In addition, surrounded by the poor, I will be discriminated against as a wealthy foreigner. Sure, the cost of living may be lower, but the infrastructure and medical care are bad and the “foreigner tax” is high. Not to mention that I would need to be proficient at the local language. After 2 short trips to the Philippines travelling in various regions, I saw red flags for expats. I am still collecting data abefore I make my decision where to retire to in 5 years.

USA is the worst country to retire. The healthcare is too expensive that people from USA are going abroad for medical purposes. Also, crime rate has gone high in the last few years.

    • @rolandmueller7218
      @rolandmueller7218 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@matgranger5061 I keep hearing expats say that. But, when they get sick, they usually travel back to the USA for better healthcare. Crime is a reality in the Philippines too. If you are a foreigner, you can attract Filipino criminals who try to get money out of you. I’m not yet convinced the Philippines are necessarily better for everyone. The extreme heat and humidity makes me break out into a prickly heat rash.

i live a few miles from fort kochi. There are mosquitioes to deal with - a lot, a lot of them. Elephantiasis is a disease spread by mosquitoes, and fort kochi is known for this. The humidity is very high and the temperatures are well above tolerable for westerners - it will incapacitate you unless you are twentyfour hours in climate controlled rooms. the smell of old fish is prevalent. The traffic is incredibly high and makes even two wheelers unviable. A foreigner would have to be MAD to live here. But fifty dollars a day will give you comfortable living expense-wise, similar to what you might experience in europe... but basic amenities. I'm an Indian and i know this because i live nearby. Look up what i wrote.
