I think Microsoft made a crucial mistake not launching the Series S with 1TB storage. They would've sold a lot more hardware + Game Pass membership. I'm honestly surprised they didn't think about this.
I think they shouldhave went with a 1 TB minimum for series s, and 1.5 TB (absolute minimum) or preferably 2 or 2.5 TB for the Series X. One of the only reasons i have so many extra games is because i bought a 512GB sandisk (usb 3.2 gen 2) flash drive which i use to store my BWC games. Amd with the size of games like ark or any newer game, you constantly have to transfer or delete the modern generation games because you play more than 5 games lol
Oh, they thought about it all right... thought about how much money they were going to be able to make selling expansion storage cards when people ran out of space so fast with all these HUGE games today. They knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
@ChristianMulvihillThom yeah right ... they're losing soooo much money. That's why M$ is always on the verge of bankruptcy... no wait, they make BILLIONS in profits.
Cause they knew the complaints they’d get for selling a Series X a few months later for the same price, same size storage. They were $350 this year at Walmart for a solid month. How much would a 1TB Series S go for?
The 1tb WD can now be had for £129 here in the UK, and i have to admit that it really does enhance your Series S now you can store a lot more games on it, oh and the speed transfer once seen cannot be unseen, so be aware once you let that speed genie out the bottle you can't put it back in.....oh and the sustained speeds i saw was just under 6gb a second moving the 150 gig MS2020 to the card from internal.
1 tb isn’t even enough for me. I just sprung for the segate 2tb. Got it for a pretty good price. Now I won’t be uninstalling games as often when I want to try a new game.
I think Microsoft intended for customers to purchase accessories for their Xbox Series X. I remember when Xbox 360 had people buying the storage expansion, and 250 GB was more than enough.
I won't buy from Seagate now that WD is making cards. I am capitalist to my core but there is a difference between offering a product with good profit margins and what Seagate was guilty of, which was price gouging the customer because they had a monopoly on the XBox storge market. I'm glad i held out and waited for a cheaper alternative.
Just grabbed my self a 1tb 169,99 CAD. Saved 35$ actually brutal 300gb Xbox internal I used to have a portable storage but I had to transfer over and back, and eventually that hard drive just gave up and died
I think Xbox letting other companies compete in the expansion card market is great. Me I love Pc me and the wife game Xbox is remarkable the fact that I can have one family plan, link the pc and her xbox share everything games and ultimate. i remember like 2 years ago when I first got her the series x for her room it was expensive. 700 for the console and a 1Tb seagate expansion card. Since it’s been dropping I think it’s the best time to get infested into the ecosystem. I just got a series s for the downstairs living room on the 75 inch oled. It was amazing with the prices. I got the series s carbon black 1Tb and a western digital C50 expansion 1Tb for 450 no tax Nh, and i know a couple of years ago it would have been wayyy different if I was thinking about adding another setup in the house!
OMG! Thank you for this! I had no idea! I just ordered these bad boys using the link. Thank you! I've been waiting for the official expanded memory card to get a price drop. I've always loved the WD Black brand.
Thank you so much @genefactor007! Really appreciate you checking out the video and supporting the channel! Same here, these have kinda flown under the radar, I didn’t know about them until a friend of mine mentioned it to me recently.
1TB on the series x is rather lack luster, I'm struggling to install more than 5 games at a time, and given the time to download and install, and given most games don't let you play via disc even with the disc available. It makes it a rather poor design. Expansion is great but never had to do this with past generation consoles, you could just play straight from disc. This last generations one and x (ps4 and 5) have been worst for gamers from a loading and waiting perspective. Really hope they sort it in the next version. Some games have 100gb updates... I doubt they rewrote the whole code base, they have just made updates really unoptimised. Thanks for your video. Storage expansion seems good but still expensive for the purpose required.
Lol seagate just price matched the price of 150. It's actually more affordable to buy the 2tb seagate expansion for 270. You end up paying 135 per tb as opposed to 150 each
I think both WD and Seagate are really expensive and does not make sense. It is basically half the price of a Xbox Series X for a 2 TB expansion. I bought a NVME PCIE 4 2 Tb drive along with an Asus ROG enclosure. It works like a charm, with 2.71 Gbps transfer rate, although I agree that you cannot do direct play. I suggest all not to go for expensive options specially if you have a Series X or new 1 Tb Series S console. You can tranfer back and forth, with 100 Gb transfers taking approx 3 mins.
I have Xbox series s. I bought the WD external drive, it won’t allow me to play some games on the external drive, only on internal drive. If I got the expansion card would that allow me to play games instead of transferring games back and forth. Couldn’t find much info on this please let me know.
This has been the way for like decades, some of the unformatted drive space. When formatted is used to catalog data on the drive. You never get stated unformatted capacity, usable when the drive is formatted.
The internal SSD and Xbox Series expansion cards either Seagate or Western Digital. Will run all of your games. I will be looking to buy a Western Digital 512GB Xbox expansion card later on in the year. Also Xbox Series expansion cards are hot swappable, so you can use more if you have them.
@@JakeVirdenTechSo just to check I currently use an older storage I had before for my xbox one, and if I want to play new series x I have to transfer from that to internal storage. If I use this I won’t have to transfer them if they are stored on the WD storage card ?

Can i check, will it run optimsied s/x games from it?? As in can i transfer some games that are optimosed for S/X from my internal to it and will still run ?
Hi @laurenrichier2435. It does not unfortunately, it slots into the proprietary NVME slot on the Series S/X. I feel ya, the current Gen is a good jump in performance but with the current UI, it is really just a game pass hub with nothing for the user to customize.
They need to make a 3 TB or 4 TB version of this. Though, at this point… I think it’s not worthwhile… Especially if the Xbox is coming out in 2026. For which, they better allow people to put a PC NVME drive in them, instead of going for proprietary… Which is just stupid for everybody. It’s a money grab and nothing more. Just stupidity. So the next console, we can just order a fast NVME Drive off of Amazon for pennies on the dollar compared to these proprietary POS‘s. So that I can just get a huge one and fit all of my games on one NVME drive and be done with it.
To the people who bought this, YES: it will play Xbox series x/s games without needing transferring 😊
