NEMESIS MBT - Tank Design and Development

- A look at the design of the Nemesis MBT designed by the STT in 1974 as an exercise to develop a tank for a non-European market. The team asses many features and ideas as to what their customers might want and cover ideas and theories of the time. The finished product is quite interesting and possibly a future contender for World of Tanks? - I apologise for the long delays since my last video, on account of an exploding computer. I will try and get back on track ASAP.
In the meantime, feel free to join us on Discord at / discord

I think I speak for all of us in saying we want an episode dedicated to swingfire missiles.
This video felt very high quality, and I like the comments in the sticky notes along with the general graphic design. Well done
Thank you very much!
I agree with the above comment. Superb tank related videos. The best on TH-cam for many reasons.
These concepts would always be a tough sell in the face of available surplus Centurions and the incredible abundance of M47 and M48s. Sure these are well above the target weight but open the door to civil "assistance " improving infrastructure to bring the customers further into the fold.
The American tanks might be close-to-free due to US military aid, but a lot of countries looked to get rid of them ASAP once they realised how badly designed the M47 and M48 were after the Pakistani experience with them.
There was a clear market in the 1970's for tanks outside the US sphere of influence, if only as a statement of neutrality or new-found independence - one reason the Vickers tanks did so well globally. The problem is the actual numbers ordered by those countries, with only India being a large buyer. Everyone else is a 30-100 type of buyer.
@@iatsd you're right about the politics involved and as I sort of said, the American tanks would definitely come with political entanglements.
The M48 vs Centurion is more an issue of bad tactics and poor implementation. The M48 is the superior tank with better ammunition. Ammo developments were rapidly leaving both machines outdated with too thin armor, as they had left the M47 behind.
Other than being a gas guzzler, I think the M47 gets an unfair reputation. It even still has a hull machine gun, useful for suppressing those close in pedestrians.
@@chriskortan1530 The crews always make the difference in any theoretical analysis. Quality training and discipline will almost guarantee an adequate AFV, Plane or ship will always come out on top.
If it goes into WoT doubtless it won't actually have the original design characteristics, will be be totally unplayable and have its name changed. Great to see you are back 👍🏻👍🏻
T-63 Soviet premium tank :P
Introduced into Supertest on todays date. Kept the name and general apperance. It has gained a muzzle reference system but lost 20 kph of speed.
good to have you back
I remember all those models from bovington in the 90s where my dad taught the long armoured course, I think the black paint was there when i saw them...
woohoo new ep - thanks ed! i've been missing your videos! 😊
Glad to see you back, I do love these video lectures on some of these more obscure vehicle designs. Keep up the good work.
Was it under 40 tons in the end? As for the MTU 870 it had 1000hp at the time I believe, quite neat at 40 tons or less.
Admittedly a very interesting vehicle although in real life there was the obvious limitation that it would use components from too many different countries so might be difficult to export by a single one.
By the model,a cross between an M60 and a Cheiftain?Glad to see you back.I look fwd to your lectures immensely
This is all brilliant, not only your video but the design exercise itself is just really top-notch.
I still find the cleft turret idea fascinating, like an oscillating turret but potentially fixing the NBC sealant issues provided it's likewise fitted with an autoloader.
Good to have you back bro this is some of my favorite content on TH-cam
Yet again another informative and greatly appreciated video!!
I find it interesting and in my view common sense that army's would like tanks that aren't designed and equipped for the European battlefield, to say nothing about the stupendous prices as a consequence.
I do like the idea of a coaxial 20-25mm cannon, so as to engage light armoured vehicles or to minimise collateral damage....
I think Britain has suffered a lot in only being able to offer the likes of a 64 - 75 tonne tank. To say nothing about the resources, training and money to required to operate, let along maintain effectively such a sophisticated MBT like Challenger 2.
Excellent tutorial! You go into a lot of information on these tutorials and that is why I learn so much from your channel. Thanks for sharing this.
very glad you are back , really enjoy your stuff on the develpment of cold war stuff that did not go into production
Very informative and well presented! Many thanks for taking the time to create, post, and share!!
Glad you are back up and running!!
barley tbh, touch and go at the moment
15:41 The black paint seems like it was done as an example of a potential camo scheme.
Good to see you back Ed!
Such a good video to welcome you back with! I'm happy all things turned out well! If you ever need help, you can count on The Armored Patrol!
Good on you mate, thanks.
Quite interesting project. Good all-around tank. Thanks for interesting info on that👍🏼
Sounds like an excellent process to design a tank
I’d add that it be suitable for own forces use and that has to have these capabilities in order to be exported
This was my first view with your channel, and I was impressed with the content, narration and unique topic. Well done.
Welcome aboard!
Welcome back mate! Keep up the good work!
Hey, thanks!
nice to have you back
Good to see you back.
Nemesis has arrived to supertest today. Time for an updated video to compare WoT's tank against the design spec's.
WoT would make it a "British heavy" with 45kph top speed, the 110 with "historically accurate" pen of under 200mm, a 12 second reload and gaping big fvcking holes in the armour scheme "because it had aluminium plates at various points".
looks like a well balanced russian tier 8 premium heavy tank. Dont know how the russians would fit in the story, maybe some fancy fictionary masterspy stole the blueprints and the russians decided to give it a double barrel gun and some wheels to improve it... who knows! But it would be OP anyways!!!
Given that the Chieftain Prototype just got unveiled as a Tier 9 heavy tank and WoT has started selling Tier 9 premiums, it seems to be claiming the niche that the Nemesis might've had.
Well unless Wargaming surprises us all by doing the right thing and making the Chieftain Proto a tech tree tank leading up to the Chieftain Mk. 6 that's been in the game files for 8+ years. Such an iconic tank belongs in the tech tree rather than as a rare reward or premium.
Great vid, overtones of Mustard!!
This seemed to have a been a very pragmatic set of design choices for the UK and with the simplicity and mobility I can't help but think how well this might have compared to something like the Leopard 1. Shame this this never got to production.
Another 'must watch' video from the master. Wargamming have added the FV4201 Chieftain Prototype to Supertest. Would you consider putting together a study of the prototype deveopment to flesh out our knowledge of the tank please?
yeas, as it was my work for them... would be prudent
Thank You.
THATS ONE HELLA COOL NAME
shame it didn't go further into being put together as a prototype vehicle, would've been interesting too see if there theories were correct
Oh yeah, I forecast WG putting this in tier 8 for around....meh, $99.99 but after you grind the event for 2 weeks straight never leaving the keyboard, yeah, I see it coming 😂😅
@Armoured Archives Topic request:
Although unsuited, armies do use MBT in urban warfare. What would a tank be like to be better suited for that role?
It kind of looks like they got a t95hull and a m60 turret and changed the design a little bit and put them together
I wonder how the armour and gun compared with that of the Chieftain since the turret armour is laid out in a similar way.
What's this about liquid armor mentioned at 12:50?
a lot of vehicle in this time used liquid, mostly diesel as an axtra layer of armour, its more ffective vs shaped charges than steel, mbt70, swiss tanks and others all tested the idea
@@armouredarchives8867 Oh, I see now! Thank you, that's very interesting. Do you have any data on how liquid armor performs compared to ceramic and glass armor?
Armoured Archives I’m assuming this armor is in the form of the fuel tanks?
@@browning2471 Yup. The really hi tech designs had the fuel sandwich under pressure, but most just used it as spaced armour and a convenient place to put extra fuel. *Any* change in density will *tend* to fvck up a HEAT round trying to go through plate. The downside is that two plates (with or without a gap) is *always* weaker against things like APDS. So it becomes a design question of what type of round do you expect to face more often. In the 60's and 70's it was very much HEAT that was the choice-of-the-day. Late 70's gives you the swing to APFSDS.
@@iatsdby weaker do you mean weaker compared to HEAT or weaker compared to a single plate of the same thickness.
for the later is not true, atleast not always true, it depends on the size of the gap and the size, shap and speed of the apds, but also the relative hardness of the 2 plates. its not *always* weaker. (eg the centurian mk 5 with aditional arrmour was found to be superior to the centurian mk7 with the same thickness but not spaced armour, against british APDS).
Nice
Good video BUT … the sound level is too low. Your regular sound level is obviously a wee bit higher than on this video. Keep up the good work! 🙂 Best wishes from NZ 🇳🇿.
Maybe the Soviet 115mm could have been an option, although hopefully not in the ergonomic nightmare of the T-62 turret. It could also fire ATGM.
excellent vid.
It looks like my own concept of T110E5 Heavy Tank, i change the turret design to Welded turret instead of a Cast turret and the hull to 7 road wheels instead of 6 like the M103, i wish the US Army build the E5
I agree with the engine.
It is such a shame some of these designs never even got a prototype.
The tank looks like the British version of a T110E5 tbh
I can emphasise as well.
what about on Armored Warfare? there are no heavy-medium tanks there but just mbt, lt, td, afv and spg so heavy/medium debate arent a problem there.
not sure on that game tbh, either way it would probly end up in an insane lootbox :P
The fact that the Nemesis would likely be around Tier 5 rather than Tier 10 in Armored Warfare at least in theory should make balancing much simpler. If a tank's "natural" stats (ie the real-life design) are too strong for the top tier, the only options are to either nerf it relative to real life or make it overpowered. But for low and mid tier tanks, you always have the option of simply moving it up a tier if it's too strong.
@@armouredarchives8867 Nah it's not gonna end up in a lootbox, since it's too old and incapable to be placed in the lootbox tier unless they hyperbuff it with a 152mm and NERA.
It's gonna be a tier 5 or 6 at best with the stated stats.
@@boymahina123 I'd buy it as a T5 premium lol. Coaxial autocannons are the best thing since sliced bread.
"Nemesis" tank? Well imagine nemesis from resident evil getting an upgrade. And THAT tank is the upgrade
Please do a COMRES 75 video ????!!!!
COMRES is still being very elusive, while i have a good number of nice photos of it, the background info is still missing. other than unsourced scraps online, i need to find the offical files if any
@@armouredarchives8867 Thats interesting, i hope you find out more. It's great to see your videos and well done. You do something no-one else does, and tell us about this historic and threatened stuff. Thank you, and good luck
👍👍👍👊👊
Revenge of the study Group
Ah yes tier 9 British premium heavy tank
Turret reassembles Merkava Mk1
What, no swingfires???
i know right! had to happen at some time
Is this tank real I can't find anything about this online
well you won’t, that why i spend a horrifically long time down at archives digging this stuff out for folks, but if you want two see the model and workbooks etc they remain at bovington tank museum.
Interesting tank I feel it would fit into armoured warfare better than WOT feels abit to modern.
1974, there is nor quite a lot in the gaem even later than that
World of Tanks is a great game, almost as good as Raid Shadow Legends....good video as always, glad you got a new rig.
LOL
Now if only there's a fund to un-spot the model...
And sadly, World of Tanks is now ruining this design by making it a Tier 8 premium, nerfing its armor to the point that it's the Nemesis in name only.
Nice video, lots of usefull info and high quality images but screw World of Tanks. Put this in Armored Warfare as a t7/8 MBT.
Have they updated Armored Warfare?
@@arsenalxa4421 there is regular updates yes and a small but still present playerbase
@@quentin7763 It's been a while, hence why I asked.
Would this be strong enough for Tier 7/8? Tier 7 MBTs in Armored Warfare include the likes of the M1A1 Abrams, Leopard 2, Merkava 2D, Challenger 1, Leclerc prototype, Type 90, and T-80U. While tier 8 includes the M1A2, Leopard 2A5, Merkava 3B, T-90A, and Type 99.
This seems more like a Tier 5, which would place it alongside stuff like the the M60A3, Leopard 1A5, Chieftain Mk 10, Merkava 1, T-72A, Type 74, and AMX-40.
wait.... from 150 pounds to millions now... did pound really lost so much of its value?

The Ukraine is showing how vulnerable Russian tanks are to handheld anti-tank weapons. They have been forced to the negotiating table because of the damage inflicted by so called inferior fighters both civilian and professional army combatants.
WTF!
