- My Doberman puppy Arlo is 1 year old now and turning into a MUCH easier to manage and well-behaved family dog! This dog is incredibly smart, but a little stubborn at times. He's making tons of progress when it comes to house manners, playing with the kids, command training, his behaviors, and so many other aspects. He certainly still has room for improvement but overall, I'm very excited with the progress I've seen Arlo make during his time in our family. Owning a Doberman can be tough during that first year, but Arlo is proof that if you make it through those tough initial stages... it's all worth it!

Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.

I've had a dobie since 1983 till 1999...People warned me not to buy such an "aggresive" dog...He was the best thing that happened in my life...very intelignet from his early days...Never aggresive to people or other dogs...very friendly...he loved all my friends...even recognise a friend that he's not seen for 5 years...licked him all over:) when someone says if it's possible to talk to a dog? yes it is..he knew everithyng about u:)
I'm already convinced I want a Doberman, but with divorced parents and playing soccer and going into high school I don't think I'll have much free time to own one right now and it kills me because I want one so bad😂
He is beautiful and look how shiny his hair coat is... 😊 he grew up to be a well behaved dog! John you did such a good job with him.

These dogs can be a real handful as young pups! Not for the faint-hearted. But, with a great deal of patience and a lot of training and socialization, they turn into some of the best all-around-dogs you could ever want to have. Looks like you did a great job with Arlo John! Just visiting to check on beautiful Arlo. Progress for me I managed to not cry while watching. Can't guarantee that not happening again any time soon. I lost my boy Hercules a month ago from the dreaded DCM. He was only 4. Sadly I most likely will never have another because of my own health problems.

European Dobermans are phenomenal, not commenting on those of other origins as I only have experience with the breed my father had raised. One of the Dobermans my father bred followed and protected me everywhere I went. We built an incredibly strong bond. I was an outside tomboy and he just was phenomenal in protecting me against snakes and other individuals I met on my hikes, without causing any damage. I never had to yell out commands not to attack as he was protective rather than on the offense. Many years later I still miss him, remember him with love and affection. These dogs seem very sensitive and aware of others' personal space and limitations.

Good job! Arlo is fantastic! I have a Female Rottweiler and she was behind on manners but at 14months she has started to back off on the jumping up, that was hardest for her and being 102lbs at that age can surprise people that don't know the power of a high drive dog!
Well you convinced my son who is 18 years to get one. But I am the one who ended up taking care of our Dobbie who's name is Billah and he is 13 month now We had him since he was 10 weeks old. I have learned so much from your videos so THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. This was my first dog at the age of 47,there were time I just wanted to give him up but I am so glad I did not. He is such a good boy now. I work from home with a call center but my boy knows not to make any sounds or bark while I am working. He is so good. I love him so much.
I can’t believe it has been a year that you’ve had Arlo. When I first saw your channel, I thought, “Grrrrr, someone else buying from a breeder.” Then I saw your video on adopting rescue Dobies, and I was sincerely happy. Great channel. P.S., my grown daughter grew up with rescue Dobermans from the age of one month. As a toddler she would “read” books to her best friend, a beautiful, female, red, rescued Doberman. ❤️

Brand new pupppy. Believe me there aren’t any other types. I always laugh when someone say new baby. THEY ARE ALL NEW. we got our pup the same time. 1 day before the shutdown we picked him up. We take him all sort of places. We did the mall yesterday. I have a kennel in my back seat of my truck. He gets to go anytime because of it.

Thanks John for helping me decide to get my boy "Jed" from the breeder in Redmond Oregon. He is now almost 7 months old, and the love of my life. I'm retired and we "live" in remote areas "boondocking" in our RV, from central Idaho to Nevada, southern Utah, and this winter in SE Arizona. We spend 24/7 together and are bonded like epoxy. This is all your fault! LOL.

We adopted a 10 month old doberboy in September, and his training was coming along very well for a dog with no prior structure in his life. Then I had to have foot surgery about 2 weeks ago, and knew my now-yearling boy who was use to going everywhere and enjoying the woods and dog parks would need extra exercise and stimulation while I recuperate. So for Christmas we got our adopted doberman...another adopted doberman LOL
They are very well matched up, even with both being males, wear each other out so we all can have rest periods, and he's actually learning more good behaviors from the new dog that's about a half a year older than him, as the new one had a better beginning.
The other three dogs (9 yr old doberman, 13 yr old greyhound, and 7 yr old mixed weimer females) continue to show them both how to be very good dogs with their alpha female tendencies, but I can tell they also appreciate that the boys play so well together and leave them alone more lol
training a dog during a pandemic must be way harder than normal but glad to hear he is doing really well
Mine is 3 months old now and super stubborn. He's smart and has proven it. He's a fast eater so we got him the puzzle ball feeder.. 2nd time using it, he learned to unscrew it to get the food so that was a no.

Though I've had other large breeds (Rott, st bernard and greyhounds) it was very helpful to get your insights into what to expect with the Doberman.

Great video as always. I think a lot of us like to hear you talk through those minor issues you mentioned a little more. My seven-month-old Doberman is also experiencing some leash reactiveness. I’d also love to hear about Arlos headstrong stubborn activity because our is also quite stubborn. We love hearing about Arlos successes but understanding how you work through some of the challenges is even more valuable! Even if they are minor.

Arlo is awesome. I will be picking up my Euro-bred Dobe puppy in 5-1/2 weeks. He's just 3 weeks old right now. I am enjoying watching your videos. You give lots of great tips and advice. The Doberman breed is like no other and definitely have certain challenges.
It’s been fun following your journey. Sure is a beautiful dog.
One thing I did to overcome leash reactivity (which was completely out of control) with my dogs was I worked them up to doing obedience work OUTSIDE the dog park. As they got better at tuning into me, we would move the exercises closer and closer to the fence (where other dogs would go zooming by or be playing or whatever). It proved to be a wonderful resource and training. Now my dogs are well behaved on the leash AND we play at the dog park! In the beginning I took them nearly daily for a 15-20min training session for many weeks in a row but it sure paid off! Nothing beats having a well balanced dog!
