LOL... those "people who look like they're building some type of a robot", the one in the black shirt, that's.. me! :D that photo was taken in 2008, during the final competition for our robotics class.

I was homeschooled through elementary school, and I can tell you that your predictions here are basically public school catching up to what I had in elementary school: freedom to discover. I believe kids inherently want to learn. EVERYONE wants to learn. It's just that school is a terrible way to do that. Fortunately, when I came in to middle school and high school, I'd learned how to learn, so while I feel a little held back, I know that I am learning whether it's at school or not.

Oh Sal, I love so much your optimism, and I wish you were right, but I think this a much harder battle against the status quo of education... Maybe I'm pessimistic, but I don't see (at least my country) changing that much in a single decade.

I like you're presentation style and I agree with some of what you've said, but I just don't see some of these things happening, or happening is such a grand way. I'd love to see lecture halls reduced in size, but I don't see them becoming near obsolete anytime soon. I can see the "creative" field increasing, but not out numbering the other two classes. I like the 3 teachers to a larger class idea, for higher lvl courses, but not in K-10 areas at all.

This could possibly work with college students as most are there to learn by their own decision, reasoning aside. But introductory classes will need instruction by lecture for the most part, as they introduce the students to simpler ideas and concepts. Intermediate and advanced classes could shift to project-driven, innovation-filled sessions that play on the introductory material to create more complex ideas for the students to explore. But only if the students would accept it.

  • @st3jace

I agree that we're headed in this direction. It's an emergent property because I perceived some of the same changes almost to the T, just based on the logical reasoning of where we're at socially and technologically. We just need to influence the damaging impacts of government and political impediments as well as issues with scarcity and we're there!

@joshuawine I remember this. My elementary in 1976 was newly built with what they called the "open concept" model. No walls.."rooms" were divided by bookcases. I just remember we couldn't talk too much because it would get too loud and we would disturb other "classes" around us.
That school now has actual rooms built. No more "open concept".

There are a lot of people in the comments saying "This can't be true, the system is too rigid". Or "You have too high hopes for mankind". I am in a private french IT school that already applies those principles. The education is project driven. We have no teachers. I can't imaging going back to the old system. So what Sal says is ALREADY taking place. If the governments doesn't change education by themselves, private schools will grow up like mine did. I is just a matter of time.

With a globalized education how will countries (who fund education) address the desire to socialize children and build historical narratives that explain the world from the nation's perspective- right now states choose which history we teach- what will happen when there is so much more variety? How will countries socialize and build "proud loyal citizens?"

It is difficult enough to get one student interested and active in learning. It’s even harder when you get a bunch of them in one class together. I'd love to see more money going into Education, but politicians don't see eye to eye with me. Schools make a bit more than 10k per student, but not much, and much of that money doesn't exactly go in to the student’s education.

Very interesting. In my field it is kind of this way already.. In Animation you get hired based on your demo reel. . whether it is a modelling, animation or rigging or Special FX reel. . you get hired based on that and not on your academic credentials. And you upgrade your skills by studying "Khan Academy" style online tutorials. . like Digital Tutors.

@TheHdulcimerguy hopefully- costs will go down dramatically as technology increases- Khan Academy has already delivered nearly 100 million high-quality lessons remotely and for free. Naturally, there will be some things that you would need a teacher to be present for, but it will free up more time for personalized attention as opposed to lecturing the the teacher might not even understand 100%.

I know sal was focusing on education, but this is a wonderful optimistic view when you throw other quite expectable predictions like energy crisis, environmental disasters, epidemics/famine, capitalistic implosion, and political unrest into the mix. Realistically, we will be lucky to survive the century.
We can only hope technology, literacy, and creativity will truly find solutions for these problems before they drown us.

One thing: less people. To make this system work we need to have smaller population (About 1 billion, I think). Because there is just not enough resources for 7 billion. And not all countries will be developed, as the meaning will change. In the countries that is now developed you will have this system and very high standard of life, but in now developing or undeveloped countries you will have the system we have now in developed countries.

I love what Sal is doing and I think this might be what is needed to break up the public school/union monopoly. I suspect Sal has many, many enemies in the education establishment and will be dragged into the politics of education sooner rather than later. Good luck.
I do have one concern...I know Sal's focus is math and science, but I think Humanities is just as important and all students need to learn history, philosophy, econ, arts, etc. They are just as important.

@Films4You It was Labour who 'democratized' the HE system in order to hit their 50% in HE target. Enrolment for 'soft' degrees has gone up while science depts have closed down due to lack of intake. A lot of kids in the UK see uni as a chance to party for 3 years.
And while they're boozing away their student loans, who's left to train for the real jobs that keep UK society running? Where are the plumbers, the electricians, the builders?
Imported from Eastern Europe, that's where.

I think the demand for 'master teachers' and continued education is very real. Some select few have already been capitalizing on it by setting themselves up as experts and organizing seminars. If people can see the value in learning they will be willing to pay properly for that knowledge.

I love how many people are correcting him in the comments... He's not giving out some rigid set of predictions that are perfect and exclusively going to come true. He's giving out *ideas*. The very premise of his lecture: ideas.
The fact of the matter is that physical labor is becoming less common, the educational system is becoming outdated, and internet is spreading and growing. All of these things will coincide and they will force change. Perhaps not good change, but they will happen.

the transition to being judged on what you tangibly produce sounds so interesting. i'm from the UK and there is too much emphasis on grades and testing. this has now led to teaching being orientated around exams rather than actually learning the content and true meaning of a subject. youth unemployment is at a record high and most youths are leaving school without the most basic of education. the politicians in the UK lack innovation and are stuck in traditional, pen and paper based learning

These videos are making me think... I don't want my kids(I plan on having them, let's say this will happen max 10 yrs in the future) to go to the schools I had to/chose to go to, because of different reasons which are irrelevant right now but won't be when I'll have to decide whether to put them into schools or not. So I'm thinking on teaching them at home, or better said, tutoring them while they learn through KhanAcademy and all these scientific videos...

  • @Respectable_Username

The thing is, not everyone is creative, and many people, including myself, would actually prefer the way things are taught now. I mean, it's not totally teacher --> student. Classes, at least in my school, tend to be more relaxed with more conversing between the class, but still the basic teacher stands at the front and teaches stuff. In fact, the only way that I would improve most of my classes at the moment would be to throw a large portion of the class (the uninterested ones) out of it.

Master lvl educators do receive a good wage, as they should, but it’s becoming more and more difficult to get ppl to want to go into Education, because the starting salary isn’t very attractive. Those with strong backgrounds in math and science tend to go after better paying jobs. Those who do go into Education tend to “burnout” after about 5 years, for many reasons, one of which is the pay.

The role of teachers will will change, but it won't increase. Artificial intelligence systems will be able to plan, present and track student progress and development more accurately and efficiently. That and open source initiatives such as your videos here on TH-cam will further erode the formal classroom setting.
Also, the distinction between learning and working will continue to blur. To 'attend school' or to work for an advanced company will include both, learning, and working.

You're idealistic about the lecture hall becoming obsolete; higher education is a business and education is a secondary priority. Universities will have a hard time justifying their tuition fees if their 'product' is available to anyone with an internet connection.
We've seen the negative impact of technology in schools where students can plagiarise wikipedia or rely on their gadgets to avoid thinking.
Also a project portfolio won't get you interviews, a degree from a brick building will.

I definitely agree. School is rigid so that it's stable and safe. On top of that, you must realize that most students don't want to be taught. Especially middle and high-school students. At this age, they are in the mindset that they are forced to learn and aren't necessarily sure why. I hear "I will never use this again" a lot from this crowd, when they most certainly will. Students won't accept it, schools won't pay for it, teachers aren't prepared for it. This is more idealistic than anything

I think teachers will resist your vision. The teaching that I see is still stuck in the 80s and stuck DEEP in bureaucracy.

David Adams As a newly hired teacher, I can flat out tell you that you are wrong. I, along with my colleagues, would LOVE to teach like this. The resistance will come from the sluggish, bureaucratic national and state education systems that focus on testing rote memorization, rather than creativity and problem solving.

It is the government in the UK that resists change... Teachers have been pushing to change since 1990s

I'd like to believe that what you say is true, but I think the ruling classes in developed countries benefit from a lifestyle which depends on there being an underclass to carry out less desirable jobs etc. and will therefore never allow such a radical change in the education system. I'm not saying it won't happen, but I think it will be much slower than your saying it will.

... If our generation succedes in changing the way you are accepted to a schooling institute, people will be able to prove their knowledge even though they've never been to a school before - I'm thinking here of something like the A-levels(I chose them because I think most of you know them), in our country you have to do the basic schooling to get to write them but what if a person, 18yrs old, would pay to write it but never set foot into a school before? I'd like my children to learn like that.

Interesting ideas. However, the achievements system doesn't seem any less broken than grades and polished CVs in assessing how people really are. Look at achievements in video games where people are just running after what gives them some badge instead of exploring for themselves. Great, let people learn on their own but then really do let them alone and don't monitor and assess them all the f#@$ time. How free are you really to go back and revisit something if it immediately shows up somewhere?
